: The Top of Phoenix Meet & Greet
BruceRTL 10-03-2008, 01:37 PM When: November 1st, 2008
10:00 AM
Where: We'll meet at Margaret T. Hance Park (1134 N Central Ave, Phoenix) and just hang out till noon. Parking is just north and west of the bridge on Culver Street shown in red on the map below.
12:00 noon
At noon, we'll leave for lunch at Los Dos Molinos (8646 S. Central Avenue, Phoenix) This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurant's in Phoenix. It's about .75 mile south of Baseline on the west side of the road. I figure we'll be arriving around 12:30. This trek will take us south on Central Ave through downtown Phoenix.
Around 1:30 pm
After lunch leave for South Mountain continuing down Central Ave. and heading all the way to the top of South mountain. We'll hang out on top of South Mountain for a couple of hours visiting and taking pictures before going our separate ways.
RustyH 10-03-2008, 02:41 PM I'll be there.

Right near the park is the Irish Cultural Center (http://www.azirish.org/) which might be of interest for some.
There is also a Best Western Hotel (http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=03119) literally within walking distance for anyone traveling to the meet. I've stayed at the hotel and its pretty nice. Go to www.kayak.com for the best rates.
Two weeks to go...time for those on the fence to jump off, one way or the other! :p
BruceRTL 10-19-2008, 04:03 PM My maybe has unfortunately turned into a no. Sorry we can't make it. It sounds like a great time. Have fun.

BruceRTL 10-23-2008, 05:24 PM Great advice MeanMachine19! The weather is great this time of year and getting better!

BruceRTL 10-24-2008, 07:19 AM Don't forget to bring your two-way radios to the meet! We will be on channel 6. This will be useful when we are caravaning to lunch and to the top of the mountain.
Meanmachine19 will be bringing the AZ ROC Banner down from Sedona for people to sign. Also, we're going to have a parallel parking contest so you have a week to bone up on those parking skills!
Come on everyone - let's get excited!

Remind me to park on the other side of the parking lot! lol I know Kevin has cones but just in case.....
It seems like we don't get much practice in Phoenix parallel parking. This will be a good test / practice for all of us.

It seems like we don't get much practice in Phoenix parallel parking. This will be a good test / practice for all of us.
That's what makes this fun. In many parts of the country, especially back east, that's the only way to park (did I tell you I came from back east? And that I am the defending champ?). We've done this little competition for the past two years and we've had fun with it. Of course, we need to find a curbed area.....
TheCuteOne 10-25-2008, 01:01 PM well hey at least I can admit it ok guys.... LOL that's more then I can say for most my peers who can't park like that who refuse to believe it LOL
LOL LOL LOL well if i ever have to park like that I'll call you Kev and then I will wait two hours for you to get here then you can park her within five minutes and the traffic that accrued behind me can stop honking LMAO

TheCuteOne 10-25-2008, 04:21 PM LMAO LMAO LMAO Wow ... that I would park like a mile away and get some serious popcorn, have a paramedic waiting behind the scenes, and TONS of cameras... oh and the insurance guy behind the paramedic... LOL LOL LOL LOL

RustyH 10-25-2008, 06:41 PM I taught my son how to parallel park our lifted Expedition. Maybe I'll let him represent. Wait....there aren't any concrete mailboxes around are there.
BruceRTL 10-25-2008, 07:46 PM I taught my son how to parallel park our lifted Expedition. Maybe I'll let him represent. Wait....there aren't any concrete mailboxes around are there.
All concrete mailboxes have been removed but it's widely known that Expeditions actually repel concrete mailboxes while Civics attract them. :D We removed them just in case we have some Civics show up!
Smokin Ace 10-26-2008, 08:00 PM Wow missed a lot in here. I am actually good at II parking. I was taught in a Standard cab long bed truck usually with a trailer in tow. In Chi town that is the only way to park I guess you can call that back east :). I have never done it in this truck though. We will see how that goes LOL V and I might put on a great show! LOL
BruceRTL 10-26-2008, 08:18 PM If any one is coming to the meet from out of town and wants to get a car wash prior to the meet, the closest car wash is:
Weiss Guys Car Wash
711 Grand Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85007-2509
I'll get to the parking area around 9:30 and then dust off / detail my truck.
Stay tuned to more info as the week goes on....:)
Smokin Ace 10-27-2008, 08:17 AM Question..... Are you parking driver side or passenger side? It makes a difference :)

Los Olivos Hand Car Wash
232 E Mcdowell Rd, Phoeinx
Voted "New Times" best car wash...comparable prices, no nasty machines and great service. And its only a couple of minutes from the park.

I know but I use to drive by there and got the impression they were more of a detailing place and therefore more expensive. I'm going by memory here and that's dangerous. Have you actually used them? I guess I'll have to give them a call. Thanks Rusty!

I have used them on numerous occassions, usally getting my wife's civic done as this place is just down the street from her office. Wash prices run from $6 for a basic to $24 for a complete wash with full interor and exterior armourall or whatever they use.
Smokin Ace 10-28-2008, 10:43 AM What ever happened to doing it yourself? I am washing my RL on Friday :)

 We're looking forward on seeing how many Ridgelines we can get on South Mountain Saturday! Right now we have 9 confirmed and 6 maybes. I sure hope some of the maybes are able to make it.
We'll see everyone at 10 AM downtown Phoenix where we'll hang out and practice our parallel parking. Then at noon it's off to lunch. Bring your appetite, because they sever big portions at Los dos Molina's (http://www.losdosmolinosaz.com). We're scheduled to be there around 12:30. After lunch we'll have a caravan of Ridgelines heading down Central Avenue all the way to South Mountain and up to the top. This is where the two way radios will be real handy (Channel 6). The weather is supposed to be in the low 90's so it's going to be an awesome day!
Kevin (aka MeanMachine19) is bringing the Arizona ROC Banner for everyone to sign. I have been talking with Arrowhead Honda trying to get a 2009 Ridgeline at the party but Saturday is there busiest day so that's not going to happen. They did however give me some other goodies to hand out.
meanmachine19 10-29-2008, 08:00 AM Your form back east you never had one way streets down town with parallel parking on both sides of it?
Yes, we definitely have one way streets. Most out here though are two way.
We can hold the competition for both!
meanmachine19 10-29-2008, 08:01 AM Sure if they want to come all they way down to my house LOL
I'll be there around 7 a.m.! LOL:p (j/k)
Smokin Ace 10-29-2008, 08:03 AM Yes, we definitely have one way streets. Most out here though are two way.
We can hold the competition for both!
Not sure I have enough time to get myself ready for that kind of competition. I will do what I can or maybe bow out rather then make myself look bad LOL.
Smokin Ace 10-29-2008, 08:04 AM I'll be there around 7 a.m.! LOL:p (j/k)
You better have coffee and donuts!!! (no pun intended)
PS- Donations for the water bill are appricated but soap will be provided. LMAO

Too bad there are no more Krispy Cremes! LOL.....;)
Does it include wax? (Turtle Wax Ice preferred!)
Smokin Ace 10-29-2008, 08:21 AM Too bad there are no more Krispy Cremes! LOL.....;)
Does it include wax? (Turtle Wax Ice preferred!)
I only have old school turtle wax around so if you want to wax on wax off it you better be there before 7 :) Might be hard to wash in the dark since the sun isn't up till 6:45am
I will definitely be there. First weekend off in 6 weeks. :P Parallel parking though? yeah there will be some dents!!
BruceRTL 10-29-2008, 04:10 PM Great news everyone! Ben is a salesman from Arrowhead Honda in the northwest valley and is the man that sold me my 2008 Ridgeline 11 months ago. He will be attending our meet, and driving a brand new 2009 Ridgeline just for us to gawk at! He will also be available for questions.
Don't worry Ben, I'll make sure I bring some McGuiar's just in case we need to wipe off any of the slobber.
Thanks Jennifer for hooking us up and thank you Ben for coming downtown on your day off! :)
RustyH 10-29-2008, 10:24 PM I'm getting the Rockford Ridge ready. Put the 22"s back on and got it aligned. If anyone in the Phoenix area wants a set of 06 RTL wheels, tires with only about 12,000 miles on them, lugs and wheel locks and even the plastic chrome covers, let me know and I'll bring them along.
TheCuteOne 10-30-2008, 06:07 AM by the looks of it I may not be able to attend but I still have Bruce's number and Kev's number if I get done early enough :(
BruceRTL 10-30-2008, 06:54 AM by the looks of it I may not be able to attend but I still have Bruce's number and Kev's number if I get done early enough :(

BruceRTL 11-01-2008, 08:46 AM Today's the big day. I hope to see everyone at the park at 10:00 this morning. Don't forget your radios, hats, & sunscreen. It's suppose to be 92 degrees this afternoon. There is no shade on top of South Mountain. :)
We have some very nice gifts donated by Arrowhead Honda. The raffle will be around 11:00 this morning!
Don't forget that Ben from Arrowhead Honda is bringing a 2009 Ridgeline to the party. I can't wait to see that!

BruceRTL 11-01-2008, 09:49 PM "V", we came down that hill pretty fast. It was a blast.
Thanks to everyone who attended our meet today in Phoenix!
Kevin (Meanmachine19), Mike (AZRidgeliner), Shane (Reaper) and his wife Jennifer, Brian (SmokinAces) and his wife Kristin, Craig (Fett), Rusty (RustyH), Erik (Wite07), Bruce (BruceRTL), Veronica (TheCuteOne), and Bennie from Arrowhead Honda.
It was great meeting new members and seeing old friends.
A huge Thank You goes out to Arrowhead Honda for providing over a hundred dollars worth of prizes and promotional material, Kevin for providing some t-shirts & matchbox Ridgelines, and let's don't forget Bennie, one of the Arrowhead sales associates who came to our meet on his day off to show us all a 2009 RST Ridgeline. That was very exciting.
Here is the line of 10 Ridgelines where we parked for lunch.

Truckin' 11-02-2008, 10:06 AM Hey to all! It looks like you had a fun time. It's good to see some familiar faces. I look forward to meeting the rest of you for the first time in Sedona in April. Put it on your calendar now.
white07 11-02-2008, 06:24 PM Thanks to all for the meet! I had a great time. Next time I'll have better luck finding everyone the first time around:rolleyes:

meanmachine19 11-05-2008, 12:41 PM Since the meet I've been out of town and away from the computer....
Bruce, awesome job on the meet! I had a blast, and seeing an '09 up close like that was terrific! (Wonder if we were the first meet to have an '09 at?...another AZ first!)
It was great putting faces to the names I've spoken with here on the site. It was truly great to finally see Rusty's RL up close and personal. Totally awesome wheels!
As we begin to settle in and 'hibernate' from the meet scene as the holidays creep up, we will be thinking of what to do next for Sedona V. I hope everyone from Saturday's meet makes it, as well as many, many others!
Again, great job Bruce. South Moutain was especially nice...my first time there!:p
BruceRTL 11-05-2008, 01:10 PM Thanks Kevin for the kind words! Everyone who attended helped to make it a good meet. Thanks to everyone and especially Arrowhead Honda for allowing Bennie to show us a 2009 Ridgeline! Yes I believe it is the first 09 to be shown at a meet. Very cool!
Now it's time to focus on Sedona! My wife is even taking a vacation day to attend. I can't wait! :)
RustyH 11-06-2008, 01:16 PM I finally got a chance to put my photo album of the Phoenix meet together. Thanks again Bruce for all your hard work.

Rusty, I've been so busy with work lately, I only just looked at your photos. MeanMachine19 is right - very nice! They really do document the day. Thank you so much for documenting this great event. (You could of perhaps left out that last photo of me)
I was at my local Arrowhead Honda yesterday for a B16 and I got to thank Jennifer in person for everything. She told me that Bennie came back from the meet amazed at how knowledgeable our ROC members were on the 2009 Ridge. He was ready to do a walk through of all the features but everyone did that for him.
A great day for everyone. Who knows, it may happen again next year. Stay tuned.....
This chapter is now complete, now it's off to Sedona! :)
TheCuteOne 11-07-2008, 04:16 PM Why is it the best pics are takin when you are totally not paying attention?! lol

meanmachine19 11-07-2008, 10:01 PM Here are some of the 2009 RL that Arrowhead Honda (Bennie) brought over. These show some of the differences from the previous models such as the fog light, front grill, back bumper w/ more recessed tow package, straighter line and more black molding.
meanmachine19 11-07-2008, 10:03 PM And finally, a few more of the group and the RLs........
BruceRTL 11-08-2008, 02:53 PM Great Photos Kevin! Good Idea putting the 09 photos where everyone can see the changes.
Truckin' 11-08-2008, 05:22 PM It makes me almost feel like I was there! Thanks for all the photos. I'm looking for all of you to attend in April so I can see you up in Sedona.
jMoMo 11-09-2008, 10:47 PM I am sorry that I missed this. I had an unscheduled work-related event happen and had to tend to it.
BruceRTL 11-10-2008, 06:36 AM I had an unscheduled work-related event happen and had to tend to it.
This is never a good thing, and the very reason I keep playing the Lottery! :) Whatever the situation, I hope everything got dealt with. We're sorry you couldn't make it also. Maybe next year - or maybe we'll see you in Sedona in April!
Reaper 11-10-2008, 09:24 AM I have been a little busy but I wanted to say thanks to Bruce and everyone that showed up, it was nice meeting everyone. By the way, great pictures taken by all.:p
BruceRTL 06-29-2009, 07:25 PM Attention everyone who attended this meet and received a free oil change coupon from Arrowhead Honda. It expires on Tuesday, June 30, 2009. That's tomorrow!
I'm heading over to San Diego in a couple of weeks for the So Cal meet. When I checked my maintenance minder, it was down to 20% till my next A1 service. I pulled out my coupon, yesterday, and learned that it expires on Tuesday. Guess what - I got my oil changed this afternoon. I'm going to Discount Tire to get my tires rotated for free in the next couple of days.
Smokin Ace 07-01-2009, 10:04 AM Thanks Bruce for a reminder note :)
Have a safe trip to CA
BruceRTL 08-25-2009, 08:06 AM Last November when we had the "Top of Phoenix Meet & Greet", I think everyone had a great time. Well guess what - it's time to do it again! The bad news is, because of all the traveling I've been doing due to my job and various medical issues (thank goodness those are now all behind me) I haven't had time to put anything together. I was just going to let this years meet peter out, but I decided to at least try and put something together. I'm going to need help with this, so I'm asking all the Arizona ROCers to give me suggestions on where we can meet, and what we can do. I'll try and suck it up and get er done......

Bruce, no need to go 'nuts' over it. A cool place like a park (Tempe Town Lakes) that isn't too far to go to lunch. Maybe a day at the zoo....something easy!
RustyH 08-25-2009, 02:30 PM I'm working on something, but I don't want to go into it until I get a little more information....hopefully this week or next.
Stewie 08-26-2009, 06:06 PM maybe a day at the park, or meet for lunch then a cruise out...
rusty what you got? :D
RustyH 08-26-2009, 07:51 PM Im trying to set up a deal with AirRaid Air Filters to allow us to meet at their north Phoenix facility and maybe have one of the trucks allowed on their dyno, then have and Airraid cold air intake installed then run the truck again to see if there are any real changes. Still in the discussion stage and nothing to report yet.

Smokin Ace 09-01-2009, 04:20 PM wow busy and gone for a bit and things have changed! I will try to use my brain and come up with something we might be able to do but lately the mind is not working well.
Reaper 09-02-2009, 07:44 AM Well if I am free I will be there, I had a great time last year.
As far as somewhere to go how about we head out of town up some nice curvy roads and veiw some scenery. For example we meet somewhere in Mesa and drive up to Canyon Lake. They have a 90 minute paddle boat ride on Canyon lake on the Dolly Steamboat that is pretty cool (I just looked and it is $20/person and the tour starts at 12:00pm) and then have lunch at the lake after the boat ride. They have a little restaurant on the water that is not bad. After lunch we could drive up the road another 5 minutes to Tortilla Flats (they also have a little restaurant if the lake restaurant does not work out) and check it out and then drive back to Mesa stopping at the Goldfield Ghost town.
If the $20/person boat ride is to much then we could drive up to the lake and Tortilla Flats have lunch and drive back stopping at the Goldfield Ghost town. I realize it is a bit of a drive but the views are great, there would be some great picture taking oppurtunities for the Ridgelines and the roads are a blast to drive.
Here is the website for the Dolly Steamboat if you have never been up there and want to check it out.

I am not trying to take away other peoples ideas it is just a suggestion that would provide about 3/4 of a day worth of entertainment.:D

Stewie 09-03-2009, 01:01 PM So how are the plans coming along....
BruceRTL 09-03-2009, 03:48 PM The first Saturday in November sounds good to me also.
I'm in Georgia this week but will be back in Phoenix Friday night. I'll try and get something going after Labor Day weekend. Rusty, PM me or call my cell phone. Let's chat...:)
Smokin Ace 09-14-2009, 08:38 AM Any News on this yet?
Stewie 09-15-2009, 01:33 AM Still happening?
Inquiring minds would like to know :)
BruceRTL 09-15-2009, 08:52 AM Sorry guys, I've been busy with a little thing called work. :) They've had me traveling all over the country but I'm in town for a couple of weeks now. I'm getting sick of it but at least I'm employed!
I'll talk with Rusty ASAP and let you know what we come up with.
I will shoot for the first Saturday in November which is the 7th but can't confirm the date till later this week. Stay Tuned!
BruceRTL 09-18-2009, 02:05 PM I have been talking with Rusty H and unfortunately the spot he was looking at isn't going to pan out. But he is going to keep on trying and maybe next year... Who knows???
Regardless, let's plan on having the 2009 Top of Phoenix Meet & Greet that first Saturday in November, the 7th. I will start a new thread and post more information during the next week.
If anyone has any ideas, please PM me or call me on my cell (602-738-6357).
Thanks for your patience everyone and thanks Rusty for your efforts - maybe we'll get them next year. :)

I like the idea...I've never been that way and would love to make a 'day' of it!
RustyH 09-25-2009, 09:36 PM we meet somewhere in Mesa and drive up to Canyon Lake. When this was first suggested, I told Bruce that it wouldn't work because I didn't want to drive my truck up a gutted dirt road to the lake like I did 20 years ago in my old Trooper II.
After checking out the map, I can see that I was wrong and apologize. This does sound like a good idea. One other thing Bruce and I were thinking about was something we would call the Phoenix Drive By....driving the trucks to a shooting range near South Mountain Park for a bit of target shooting, but after checking out the range, I don't think that part will work. Going to the lake, we might be able to go to the Usery Pass gun range, but I'll have to check and see what times are available on Saturday, November 7th. I know they have a cowboy shootout early in the morning, but I don't know what's scheduled for later in the day and what the related costs would be.
For now, the Steamboat trip seems like a good idea. It's got my vote!
I'm hoping this works out. I don't know anyone else who has a RL (besides my wife's dad in Charleston, SC). Looking forward to participating...
Reaper 09-28-2009, 08:07 AM I have done the trip up to the lake and the ghost town many times, it is a full day of activities and may be a lot to squeeze in. Another idea would be to drive up to the lake have lunch (the restaurant sits right on the water and has nice views), then drive up to tortilla flats (5 minutes away) then back down to the ghost town and walk around. The ghost town has a mine tour, train ride, gun shoot out on main street and off road jeep tours you can take. The steamboat ride would take about 2 hours out of our day (and would cost $20/person) so it may be better to just skip that part of the trip and do everything else. Like I said it is a nice paved curvy road with great scenery and many photo ops for the Ridgelines. Steamboat ride or no steamboat road is fine with me.
BruceRTL 09-28-2009, 08:41 PM Thanks to everyone for your ideas. I like them all. The first ride on the Dolly Steamboat (Canyon lake) on November 7th is 90 minutes long, leaves at noon and costs 19 bucks. This really sounds like a lot of fun. Like Reaper says, the drive is beautiful with lots of photo opts. I would recommend that we meet at Goldfield mining town at 10:00. Did I mention they have the Coffee Cantina & Bakery. Around 10:30 we could leave Goldfield and take our sweet time while we all caravan over to Canyon Lake. Google says the 10 mile drive to the lake takes about 22 minutes. Once we're done on the lake, we could all drive back to Goldfield and have lunch at The Mammoth Steakhouse & Saloon.
I'll start a new thread with the details.
Thanks for your help everyone!

Anyone with a Phoenix area Entertainment book, they have a coupon for the steamboat ride, I think it's buy one, get one free or something like that.

But in my "Entertainment book" (page E82) that coupon expires on November 1st. It was good for 2 admissions for 50% off the normal price. I will call them and see if it's still good.

That's the 2009 version. I've got the 2010....but if they'll take to 2009 I'll be happy to give it to someone else while I use the 2010.
