Good deal! This looks like a nice event. I'm sure it will make for some great pictures. We'll need to find a breakfast location not too far from it. It looks like the timings could be similar to last summer's meet

I remember having breakfast at an "old tyme" type restaurant in the older part of town not too far from the market area that had some of the best "fresh out of the oven" home made biscuits I've ever tasted. They had fresh squeezed orange juice like Grandma made.

Know the place?

I think that's the restaurant where I had breakfast about 5 years ago. I remember they had fresh squeezed OJ and some great biscuits and gravy. The food was really good. I remember it being busy.

Can they accommodate a table of 8 to 10 from about 8:30 AM till 10:00 AM?

We usually like to have breakfast then visit and drink coffee till the show opens at 10:00 AM.

Any hotel recommendations?

I think on a Saturday they could probably accommodate a group that size; during the week you would definitely be up for a wait. That's a part of town where a lot of people work but very few live so the place is packed on weekdays for sure.

I will make it a point to catch a breakfast there (tough duty but somebody has to) and ask what Saturday's look like. It won't be soon because I'm on the road for the foreseeable future.

As far as hotels I don't know really, I work in the area so I have little need to stay in the hotels. People I work with that travel into Dallas stay at the Marriott properties because that's who we have a deal with and I've heard no complaints.

I would be inclined recommend you stay away from the motel type lodging in that area.

I'm in Dallas tonight staying at the Extended Stay Deluxe Suites. I checked out Mama's. It has some large tables that can accommodate like 12 to 14 people. We plan to have breakfast at Mama's in the morning. I also stopped at Denny's tonight to check on it as as an option. The manager was amazingly rude and discouraged me from recommending the restaurant to a Saturday morning car club group. So I'll take him up on it..

The hotel is roomy for the price. It has a fully equipped kitchen. It has worked out nicely for the kids and me.

I have some interesting results from the mileage benchmark that I conducted on way down. Basically I repeated last summer's test, but increased my speed from 62 to 70 MPH at Texarkana. Nothing earth shattering as it let me know that I have a repeatable process. The results are consistent with earlier benchmarks. I will post the results in another mileage thread.

I remember you telling us about your mileage experiment when you came down last time. It was truly amazing and I'll be anxious to hear the difference you came up with by going to 70mph.

I don't know about those hotels at all and never heard of Mama's but it sounds Italian so I'll recommend it on that basis. I'm not sure if I'll stay over or not but if I do I might end up at a LaQuinta or Best Western, only because I am a member of their points plan. Keep us updated and hope you and the family had a Merry Christmas in the Big D.

Hey Shortspark - This got me thinking about good Italian food all weekend.
I need to find a place this side of the Mississippi where I can get some good:

1) Fried Calamari with Marinara Sauce
2) Broccoli Rabe (Raab)
3) Italian Stuffed Pork Loin

Speaking of roast pork, have you ever tried Cuban style roasted (grilled) pork loin? I know how to cook it Miami style. I use Goya Mojo Criollo for the roast pork sauce. I know how to make my own Mojo Criollo but finding bitter oranges in Arkansas is near impossible.

If you like garlic, you'll love it.

shortspark
12-28-2008, 03:58 AM
I don't even know what broccoli raab is. I make pork loin all the time but not stuffed and don't even know what it would be called in Italian. As far as the calamari is concerned, I go to NY to visit my mom and brother several times a year and order the Sicilian calamari. There is an Italian joint called Northside Inn that has the best. I doubt you'll even find it in Ark/Tex. But who knows, maybe this "Mamma" place in Dallas has it.

That's a great menu Chris. I see the broccoli rabe is served as a veggie and also as part of a calzone with sausage roll. I'll have to try that out sometime. I'm not sure I'll spend the night. The hint of smokey flavor really makes it a unique Tequila but man the Anejo is getting expensive, if you can even find it.

A couple shots of it for shortspark this past summer and he was ready to do flips in my pool. Too bad I don't have a diving board.

Meet Update: 01/23/2009

For this meet, I've managed to secure a new (2009) Meguiar's wax product to give our ROC members who attend. I just received a "six-pack" last night. So I have enough for everybody who has signed up for the meet at this point.

This is a new Meguiar's product that was designed to compete with Turtle Ice. This is not a detailer like Mequiar's Ultimate Detailer, but a liquid polimer wax spray. This is not the original Quick Wax product. I tried a sample of the product last night on the paint and black trim. It seemed to make the black trim shine along with the paint. My first of this product impression is good. We can post an evaluation thread after we use the product.

That's great, Chris. I will be anxious to try it. From the description it sounds very similar to a product I've used for quite a while now - Duragloss AquaWax. Since it is from Meguiar it should be at least as good. I consider products like these to be toppers used over wax or sealants. They add a little extra boast that you don't find in normal spray and wipe quick detailers.

Too bad, you will miss the drawings for a couple of the finest car wash brushes made in the good ol USA. I was able to secure a couple of them for this weekends festivities. I just love party favors.:D

2 days till the meet.

Hey Craig (don't know why I called you Chris in a couple posts), are we still meeting at 8:30am at Mamma's restaurant? If I remember right without going through this whole thread, we'll meet and eat there then go to Market Hall for the AutoRama. Then it is Uncle Julios for a late lunch. I'm I right?

I just realized that we don't have to drive to Ft Worth for Uncle Julio's fine food for lunch.
There is a Uncle Julio's real close to the Market Hall at:
4125 Lemmon Ave
Dallas, TX 75219
Unless ya'll just feel like driving across town or something. :D

What a tremendous meet we had! Breakfast at Mammas followed by the greatest hot rod car show on the planet, maybe even the universe!! Incredible autos from years past, many worth millions of dollars. Acres and acres of them. Outfitter and his lovely wife called Mrs. Outfitter, me and my Judi, Chris (who could only join us for breakfast) and Craig and his two teenage kids from the great state of Arkansas (the kids ate Uncle Julios' out of food!). All in all a good time and I'll see if I can get some pics posted. Next time I hope we can get a bigger group and Craig will post the future date and event. Who knows, it may even be warm enough then to dunk in Outfitter's pool like we did last year and drink all his Tequilla!!

Great pics, Craig. I'm glad to see you made it back okay. Boy, you sure were not kidding when you said you took 300 shots!! Thanks again for putting this together. (Too bad you had to work, Mike. You missed a great show).

Looks like everyone had a good time. The car show must have been great, certainly looks like a lot of fun. Chris, thanks for stopping by the SCUBA shop to say high. Too bad we did not have more time to chat. Sorry to have missed this one folks :(
