: Anyone with a 50D?

I currently have a Canon 40D. While I love the camera, I hate the LCD Resolution. Now that the 50D is out I am tempted to go that way because I can keep my current glass. BUT the Nikon d300 is sure tempting after playing with both the d300 and 50D the other day. I'm looking to be sold on the 50D so I don't have to buy new glass.

I still have my EOS 20D. I'd love to upgrade, but not this year. I do have the 70-200 f2.8 IS L lens, and the 24-70 f2.8 L . I really like the "L" glass.

I'd love to get a 70-200 f2.8 IS but at $1500 I haven't been able to make the plunge yet. I have a 50mm f1.4 and a 24-105L f4 that I hardly ever use. Plus a tamron 17-50 f2.5 I actually want to try the 17-200 IS that come with the 50D. I think it will make a good walk around lens for travelling light but I will miss the fast lens.

Regardless of which lens you have, make sure the lens is still secured before you pull it out of the camera bag. I was walking down the hall at work to take Halloween pictures, and after about 40' the 70-200 IS 2.8 L fell 4' onto a carpeted concrete floor. The zoom lens was locked in the 70mm position. It's currently at Canon Repair Center. Estimate was $177 and change. It would still take good pictures in the 70mm position, so at least the glass wasn't broke. Talk about an embarrassing moment.

I like taking low light pictures, so I stick with the fast lenses. Despite the 20D weighing around 4-5 lbs with the battery grip, flash and L glass.

But back to your original question, I would have a 50D, had the camera fell instead of the lens.

Ouch, I droped my 50 the first day I had it. Lucky for me it survived and is still sharp as a tack. I feel for you on the expensive 70-200. You got away cheap fortunately.

I'm still using my trusty Canon XT which I bought almost 3 years ago. It still works great, and I have no plans to upgrade anytime soon. But if I did, I go for the 50D in a heartbeat. Wonderful camera. If you get it, please let us know how you like it.

And hey, send that useless ol' 40D down here to me and I'll get rid of it for you. :D

I'm still happy with my XTi, but if I had a chance and may take plunge later. I would go for the Canon 5D Mk II if you feel you 40D isn't cutting it, why spend a few bucks to upgrade and go for the 5D Mk2??

That would be my choice of camera.

My only complaint of the 40D is the poor screen resolution which the 50d resolves.

I think I'm going to spend my money on glass. The bodies depreciate too fast, glass holds it's value and lenses are more important anyway.

you are right there, glass always is better buy- that being said, the 50D has better screen, better high ISO performance (about a 1 stop better) and is a bit more weather resistant than the 40D.

Take a look at the 70-200 f4 IS- while not as fast as the 2.8 its signifiganly less and a hell of a sharp lens. You can up the ISO 1-2 stops and get good results unless you need the 2.8 depth of field.

Edit- I do have the 40 and 50, there is a difference in image quality too-

If you can upgrade do it sooner than later as the resale for the 40D will go down. Also there are some pro's that have noticed that the 40D will backfocus quite a bit ( heard this from local camera shop and online from Rob Gailbraith). There are several advances in the processing archetecture too (DIGIC 4). Upgrade to 15MP from 10. Dust delete feature. Live feature, and several other enhancements.

If you are going to sell the 40, try the trading post, I have used www.camerabuyer.com and have gotten good results or your local pro shop.

Good luck with the decision.

As a pro I love fast glass!!! It really comes in handy on weddings at the church where I can't use flash.

15MP shows no significant improvement over the 10 due to noise (same senso size). Also the 40D has dust delete and live featue. The 50d allows you to set focus on individual lenses IIRC. Or maybe that is the 5dmk2 I can't remember for sure.

Thanks for the link to sell my 40d :)

actually its about a 1 stop advantage with the 50D at same ISO's (use DPP sofware not Adobe ACR Beta and you can see the difference for sure)

50D does have micro adjustments (as does 5D II, and 1D series) for fine tuning AF front/back focus.

A good glass will last longer than the body, With an L series glass, any body can take great pictures.:D

Well I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I am sure thinking hard about it. I am going to play around with a 50d this weekend. I know the screen resolution is going to be hard to say no too. Thanks for the advice everyone.

I just received my new 40D yesterday. I looked at the 50D and, while it has some nice perks, I learned that:

1) the glass is even more important with the 50D
2) apparently Canon does the major upgrades on the 20's (20D, 40D, 60D), so this is just a mini-upgrade.

I'm sure the 50D is good, but several reviews indicated that it's not necessarily worth that much money, especially if you already have the 40D.

Hey Tom

Just keep an eye on the focusing. Some people have had a real bad time with it back focusing. Does not seem to be every 40D but enough that Schiller's Camera and Video knew about the problem.

Yes they usually do minor upgrades in the middle but sometimes they pull out all the stops and make a full version upgrade. The biggest thing they usually upgrade is the software, The algorithms that govern how the camera process the information it receives.

Hello,

I have a Canon EOS 50D!! I love to do photography! So I am always used to upgrade my camera!

No surprises to hear that Canon has launched the much anticipated EOS 50D, an upgraded version of EOS 40D. On the surface it looks almost similar to its predecessor. However, there are quite a few significant improvements; fifteen megapixel CMOS sensor, faster DIGIC 4 processor, 3.0" VGA LCD monitor with Live View mode offering 3 AF modes, ISO sensitivity expandable to 12800 and an HDMI connection for high Quality Image viewing. It also includes a new Quick Control screen which shows the most commonly used settings and Creative Auto mode for automatic focus and exposure.

Hope you will enjoy photography!

Well in my opinion Canon just broke their numbering system with the 7D (http://www.usa.canon.com/app/emails/eossep09/?WT.mc_id=EM0909EO01003) which is an APS-sensor camera with a single-digit designation.

That said, I was starting to steel myself to buy a 5D Mk II, but I may have to rethink that decision if the 7D lives up to its specs.

Nothing but a preview on dpreview (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos7d/) so far, but I'm watching! My old faithful 20D may get replaced this, or early next year. It'd be quite the step-up from 8mb to 18!

its because its a new line, not a replacement for the xxD line. It fits below the 1D series, and above the xxD along side the 5D.

its quite impressive and packed with tons of new technology.

Just an FYI... If you have an old or damaged Canon DSLR, you might be able to participate in the Canon Loyalty Upgrade Program. The cameras are canon refurbs with a 90 day warranty.

Upgrade:
50D Body Only for $629
50D w/28-135mm for $759 (seems like a better deal if you plan to sell the lens)

I've sampled most of the cameras mentioned here. I've also owned a few. I would recommend the Nikon over the Canon if you want a simplified user interface. That is just my opinion from experience. Most of the output is coming from the lens and the photographer.

Look very closely at the 7D that has just been released. For just a couple hundred more, you'll get a camera that is ...well just simply amazing with image quality very close to the 5D mark II, a completely new AF system which is just incredible, 8fps, and video capability that is professional grade and being used by pro DPs. Also Build quality is pro grade. If you ever dreamed of owning a pro 1D series Canon but just couldn't part with the 7 grand, this camera is it and more for around $1,700. Just an FYI. The 7D will hold its value for quite awhile. I mean since we're already talking about spending 50D money here, I think it's worth the push to get the 7D. A no brainer really.

Here's a video done with the 5DII. The 7D will be very similar with even more capability. Yes, this camera is good enough for broadcast and cinema production.

LOTS of stuff is being shot with the 5D II in the movie/TV industry- the trailer to the new Terminator is ALL 5DII and several B-roll shots as well as crash cams. Also the new Iron Man being shot now has a bunch of 5D's on set. And if your a "Ghost Whisperer" fan, the web series is all shot with 5D II.

I just got my 7D and will be out playing soon, but i have 2 seminars this weekend in ATL so no playtime this weekend.
