On their What's New, New Features page for it they say "For RL, Ridgeline Navigation support added for rear camera accessory." What the heck does that mean?

Thats a good question. I called the (888) 291-4675 number and got transfered all the way to Honda Customer Service. They said to call my Honda dealer. You guessed it - not a clue.
I would think the Nav screen becomes just a display for the back up camera when you put it in reverse. What navagation support would be needed for going in reverse? I would like to be able to turn on the back up camera without going in reverse - the added update??? - would me nice.

The following 4.31 update is what I'm really interested in.

"For RL Free flow traffic is now shown as green bands alongside the road, and traffic incidents can be listed either by a voice command or using the "map menu".

I believe XM Radio can route you around freeway traffic congestion by giving alternate routes but the above 4.31 update sounds like Real Time data events.
Notice they say "traffic incidents" and "free flow traffic" is shown.

Could it be that XM can be intergrated with the Nav. ?

I called too but transferred to Alpine's tech support who also didn't have a clue.

The Traffic XM integration is only for the Acura RL.

Your right about the XM integration for Acura RL.

I got excited, saw it listed under RL. It was a little confusing.

I've heard of some people hooking up a switch that applies voltage to the reverse pin so that the back up cam can be switched on at any time...not just in reverse. In these cases, the nav system thinks that your driving backwards so routes and things are messed up until you switch it off. Perhaps the update corrects this...but this is a total guess. I'm torn on getting it. I like to have the most recent software but the map updates don't look like they'll apply to me. I do have the back up cam (with standard install) so maybe the update will do something for me. $185...I'll have to think about it.

I think I'll be waiting for the 5dot version before I dole out $185. That's a lot of money to spend on a patch.

Good afternoon. I am a "first time" poster. My new Ridgeline will be delivered this afternoon. After reading the information on the latest version for the Navi. I called my sales person and explained that version 4.31 is now available and I think it should be included. There was a bit of hesitance...said he would call back. Called back in 30 minutes and indicated it had been ordered. Will upgrade at my convenience. That's service! Thankyou.
I must say I have learned a lot from this site and appreciate all the information.

Great move on requesting the 4.31 update on the Navi with your deal.

After you get over all the excitement, which will undoutedly and hopefully take a LONG time, could you check the Navi for any obvious upgrades regarding the back-up camera option and give us a post?

Not sure if you need the back-up camera to see any updates.

Thanks.

Hi everybody!! This is my first post and I did it as a reply because I don't know where the post button is....I guess I'll figure it out in a few days?!? Anyway, I just purchased a 2006 Ridgeline (Silver) with navi and a bunch of accessory's and I just love it! I found your forum browsing the internet and thought I'd join up.........I am going to try to get the dealer to give me the upgraded version of the dvd...When I was buying it I told them I wanted the latest and they said it was, but when I checked it out today it was the older 4.13....Seeing is that I just paid a WHOLE lot of money for this I'd would rather not give them another $185.00 just 8 days after I purchased it! Does anybody know if the 4.31 version came out before I made my purchase on Sept. 20th........? Well Hi to everybody and hope to continue reading all of your post and sucking up the wealth of info that is posted here. thanks....

I would say YES it was released before your purchase date.

I found the new release info on 9/23/05 @ https://iweb.alpine-usa.com/Hondadvdsales/naviorder.php only 3 days after your purchase.

I have called the (888) 549-3798 number and they have no idea of a specific date of release.

I would definitely insit the dealer give you the 4.31 update.

When you call the number one of the first thing you hear is a recording "If you have a new vehicle the most recent release came with your car"

Just curious to see if anyone has purchased the upgrade DVD for the navigation system yet. Trying to figure out if it is worth it to buy now or should I just wait for the next release. one reason I'm asking is because VA area modified the 495/95 on/off ramps and it confuses my Navigation system.

Thanks!

Has anyone actually bought this upgrade? Reason is couldn't you just copy this dvd on a burner and sell this for half price... A little birdie told me that this has been done on the Acura TL's version.... A little birdie also told me that I know someone that can actually perform this particular function...;)

You probably 'could' do this, but likely 'shouldn't' do this. Piracy is illegal and for the minimum benefit you get, is it worth running the risk? While I would say that the price is outrageous and completely out of line with the service being provided, they are still providing a service that should be paid for. Selling the copies of it would definitely make you a target for a lawsuit.

Personally, I think I can do without the upgrade for now, but if anyone from Canada decides to buy an upgrade to theirs in the future, please consider selling your old Canadian DVD on the trading post.

I don't think it is possible to copy the disc.

Firstly, it is a dual layer DVD, so you have to have a burner that can do that.

Secondly, the disc is protected. Meaning you can copy it, but it won't play on the nav unit. I think it has something to do with a code that is embedded into the DVD itself prior to burning. Burning the data is no problem.

It has been suggested that one way to go around this issue is to open up the nav unit and remove or alter the software/firmware/hardware that looks for the code.

Like mentioned above, it is illegal and wrong to do this. To most people being wrong is enough of a deterent, while to some, the possibility of being caught easily is the deterent -- and finally, the very few who are left, only get deterred if it becomes too difficult to do.

I do agree with all of you in that it is very pricey. I believe prices will come down once they realize most people are not willing to pay that kind of price for upgrades.

If they can make it, it can be copied

Hooray to piracy laws... Just kidding guys, I also don't think it is possible at the moment but I guarantee you this that someone will be if not doing this already...

And sorry but bull crap that the price is going to go down. Sorry to say that but I have an 02 TL-S with navi. and the price is the same today as it was two years ago. They are the only ones licenced to sell any navi dvd's to honda/acura automobiles, that spells monopoly which in turn spells you pay whatever they say you have to pay...:(

So if you think you can get this cheaper the only suggestion is to check the junk yards in 6-9 months when they start stocking the ridge's with this version... just my .02 ;)

Nav is showing up in more and more cars. It's only been out for a few years. If it doesn't catch on, they'll scrap it. If it catches on, prices will go down. I think most people will go for a portable nav systems. In which case, yeah, you're right, the prices for vehicle navs will stay high.

The DVD's are encoded physically onto the disc, so unless you bypass the feature built into the player, you're out of luck. Maybe someone has a bunch of encoded DVD blanks on the market???

When our Accord (manufactured in September 05) arrived it had the latest DVD. When our Ridgeline arrived two weeks later (also manufactured in September 05) its' DVD was the older version. After we insisted that both of our 06's have the same version of DVD and we were not going to buy the Ridge without it; the dealer went over to a brand new Pilot, popped out the DVD in it, verified that it was a new one, popped it in our Ridgeline and we were good to go. It works perfectly. The bad thing is that the person that bought that Pilot got an older version DVD if they weren't astute enough to check the dates on it.

Just bought my first brand new vehicle and I am Stoked that I got a 2006 Ridgeline in silver loaded with Navi, backup cam, backup sensors and the towing package.

I received 4.31c and I see no special features with the backup camera other than it turns on in reverse, I was hoping that it would do split screen like the Pioneer AVIC series, with those you get moving map on the left and rear view on the right.

Hopefully Alpine will add this feature soon!

I am happy that I found this forum, it is a wealth of knowledge, I would have never guessed that the Ridgeline was this popular.

I plan to post some of my mods here with pictures if anyone is interested.

Thanks

I just got my hands on 4.31 and it upgraded my firmware on the Nav unit.. now the old DVD road map will not work.. But the new DVD road map work fine... The things I see so far in the upgrade are it seems to calculate the routes faster and maps appear quicker.. the cons are smaller.. I'm trying to copy the DVD like I have done with my BMW nav DVD system but so far no luck.. I have a duo layer DVD copier and I purchased duo layer DVD+r from officedepot still no luck.. I've updated my firmware on the computer dvd unit.. still no luck.. Hummm..

I even tried blindwrite to do a backup copy and have had no luck, there is some serious copy protection on this disk.

Navi DVD 4.55 (https://iweb.alpine-usa.com/Hondadvdsales/naviorder.php) is available October 27th. (I think that 2007 models already have it). No updates to Maryland, so I won't be purchasing. I was at a golf course / new housing development in Middletown, MD on Thursday that the locals tell me has been there for about 5 years. Nothing on the Navi (Disc 4.13c)

You may want to go by a dealer and look at the map on the '07 nav and see if the golf course and development are on there. They put an exit close to my house in KY and it is there. However, the website shows no updates for KY.

$185 still seems unreasonable for the upgrade but they know we have no other options.

I had already thought of that, however, the old disc will not work in a ridge that has the new disc in it. So if you put the new disk in, use it and try to put the old disk back in, it will not work.
