10" subwoofer behind seat?

Gang,

I would love some feedback on a recent purchase I did. I bought a MTX JackHammer JH4510-4 from a Circuit City that was going out of business. So got a decent deal. The measurement is 4.8543 deep requiring a hole size of 9.1732". The enclosure requires a seal box of .75 cf.

Is it possible to build a box that could fit behind the seat for this sub?

How much depth room do I have behind the seat?

I have search the forum and couldn't quite come to a final conclusion. Please help.

Thanks.

I could be wrong, but after factoring in the MDF used in making the box, you'd need a minimum of 5.5" depth and I don't believe there is enough room behind the seat to accomodate that size unless you staft hacking away at the rear wall, completely destroying the integrety of the truck. You would be better off seeing about building a single speaker box that fits under the center seat. There's more than enough room there

I built a box of a single Pioneer 12" flat sub behind the seat using fiberglass. It was just under 4" deep I believe. Even though your diameter is smaller so you can fit in the wider portion of the wedge shaped gap behind the seat, I dont think you will fit. It will hit the metal from of the seatback more than likely. If it does fit you would definitely have to make it from fiberglass because MDF would make it too thick and would not allow you to lay as flush with the back wall as you need to be. It is not hard at all, just very messy. The cool thing is that it does not have to be pretty since no one will ever see it.

I would take off the backseat and lay a 1/4" spacer (about the thickness of fiberglass you will need) behind the magnet and see if you can get the seat back on. That alone is a pretty big effort. If your magnet is vented (hole in the middle) you may need to add a small gap in there as well between the magnet and the back of the box.

I would really recommend looking for something in a 10" sub, under 4" deep if you want to try behind the seat. I made it happen with a 12" but I am not sure if I could do it again. It was a touch and go operation.

I don't think it will work. If you have 5.5 inches of depth (a good estimate) max to work with - and you use .5 inch MDF - the full depth of the woofer is used - with the cone likely to hit the back seat.

Plus I don't think you can get .75 cu. ft. Putting a woofer in a box smaller than optimum will produce a bump or peak in the response plus a faster fall off of deep bass.

Look for posts by ChrisM, who built his own MDF box for an Elemental Designs shallow woofer. His box was very well done and will show you what can be done successfully.

I did see ChrisM's picture during my searches prior to this post but couldn't find detail info on it. I try to PM him to get the dimension and the subwoofer brand and model he used. ChrisM, if you are reading this, any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I would love to "copy" your design - if you don't mind.

UPDATE, I finally found the original post by ChrisM and found his subwoofer dimension. Thanks for posting that... I am not very good at searching on this site but I did finally find it.
