After many attempts and as many failures, skulli69 and I have found a location for the 2009 National Meet that may meet most of the criteria for our members. We have had preliminary conversations with the Best Western Plaza Motel in Pigeon Forge, TN. This is a central location that will allow easy in and out during this busy time of the year. Here is a link to the hotel; http://www.bestwesternplazainn.com/ They have a block of rooms in the rear of the facility adjacent to a nice pool and seating area. Rates will be $82 on Thursday and $97 on Friday and Saturday (plus tax of course). Camping is available just a short distance away (will post camping info later). The hotel is not “pet friendly”!! There are many activities we can participate in during the meet. Dollywood, Dixie Stampede, tubing, fishing, hiking, shopping (huge 5 Oaks Mall, craft shops galore, Bass Pro Shop close by, Smoky Mountain Knife Works), touring Cades Cove, Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee (slots only), take a run on the “Tail of the Dragon”, etc. PM or e-mail me with any questions. We will post a yes or no poll in the next few days to see if enough will participate to continue. More to follow if enough interest is shown.

Thanks Joe, hope we can get something going. We wanted North Aabama, it is booked up solid everywhere you turn. Must be the fact that our weekend will tie into the long 4th weekend!!

Hey Duncan, great job now I will email the guys in our region to see what the interest is at this location. I'm in and Lex Luthor is in too. It won't take much to get me in the Smoky's. This will give me the chance to bring my bike and do some riding.
There is a place that I would like to see on the bike, Pinnacle Peak, I heard that it is a great place to ride. OK, sound like a plan, now we need to act on it....

There several nice driving areas around Pigeon Forge, Gattlinburg, Maggie Valley, and Cherokee. Also, you have the Blue Ridge Parkway that can be considered. Everything looks good, I like the thought of the Ridgelines on the Dragon. That will be interesting. Looking forward to the meet.

canceling 5 months in advance... now that's funny.

Not funny, Tracy and I have been on this since day 1. Not enough interest! Another problem is that in this part of the good ole USA so many people take their vacations on the week of the 4th; our scheduled weekend happens to tie into the 4th holiday period, that is why most everything is booked up solid. We can swing the deal in the Smokies but interest is extremely limited. No response from the "E" folks either!!

Pigeon Forge is a great little getaway that I've done almost every year of my married life (15 years coming up this May) but we do it in the winter in the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. This past year we went from December 21 through 24.

This is my first few months in the Ridge so we took it and actually hoped to encounter some snow/ice but no luck even though the temps were in the teens at night and sustained in the 20s during the day. If you do decide to go, you've gotta take the scenic highway between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg (not the straight shot) and even better than that is an overmountain road called Wears Valley Road that starts at the visitor's center and takes you up and around the mountains until you come to the ski resort which has easy access back to downtown Gatlinburg. Beautiful ride in the winter as the leaves were clear and it was like riding around the rim of a huge bowl looking down into the valley.

If it doesn't work out in the summer, the week between Christmas and New Year's is a great time to go. That might not fit you guys' model for meets, but I'd be there! In fact, I might take a few days and do it anyway if the meet is still on.

Does anyone know what the Honda Hoot is? I read this term on the Tail of the Dragon site and didn't know if that was our national meet or what.

"Does anyone know what the Honda Hoot is? I read this term on the Tail of the Dragon site and didn't know if that was our national meet or what."

It is an annual event held in Knoxville, TN for Honda motorcycles. Been held every year for 15 years. Sad news is it has been cancelled this year due to the poor economy. Google "Honda Hoot" for details!!

Hey D, The Honda Hoot is a motorcycle thing. I have been twice with my bike, it is a gathering of Honda motorcycles from rockets to goldwings. It doesn't matter what kind of Honda you have its all about Honda. They ride the Dragon, The Park, Blueridge Parkway, the whole area is loaded with bikes. I think I read where they canceled it this year because of the economy. Google Honda Hoot. It may be on again because of the new president.

I would like to do something like this sometime. But those dates are bad for us.. the last week of June is always taken up for us.

I'd really like to do a plant tour as well. Is Gary Flint still involved with the RL? Will he be at any of the events this year?

Hey guys, I'd like to attend. Just been slow to respond. And there's always the caveat that work might pop up, but I really hope to be there. I hope more people will choose to attend, and I would imagine several would from NC or SC. I had an absolute blast at last year's meet. Though there won't be a Honda test track or factory tour, there is nothing like driving in a string of Ridgelines and knowing it is attracting attention. And skulli, I didn't get to know you all as well as I would have liked, last year. I appreciate your posts. So, put me down in the 'Attend' column and I hope others jump in.

OK guys and gals, looks like we may have enough to get something going. I am going to use this post as a "roster" for the 2009 National Meet, Southeast, Mid-South, Gulf Coast regions along with any and all that want to participate. As you all know we bombed out on the "Lincoln" assembly plant tour due them not being able to confirm the tour and lodging facilities being Mountains National Park will be our destination on June 25/28. I will be already booked for that time period. Pigeon Forge, TN and the Great Smoky headed up that way in a day or so to firm up the deal with the hotel, check out the camping facilities close by, and taking some pictures to share. Here is the current "roster":

skulli69 +1 camping confirmed
25 YHO +1 hotel comfirmed
Fla-Vyk + 1 hotel comfirmed
oarnold +1 camping confirmed
jj's ridge + 1 hotel confirmed
djeaux + 1 hotel confirmed

Arrangements have been made with the Best Western Plaza Inn located in Pigeon Forge, TN. http://www.bwplazainn.com/ They have reserved a block of 20 rooms for us all in the same location at the rear of the building; this will allow us easy access and will bypass much of the traffic and congestion on the Parkway. Room rates for the Mountain View rooms will be $79.01 for Thursday and $91.76 for Friday and Saturday; all prices are plus tax. These are all nice rooms with 2 queen beds, fridge, microwave, iron and board, hair dryer, coffee pot and balcony (see photos below). There is a pool adjacent to this portion of the facility with lots of room to “hang out”. Reservations should be made direct to the hotel at 865-453-5538 or on line via the website above, you must mention you are with the Honda Ridgeline group to get the discount. Check in time is at 2:00 PM EST and check out is at 11.00 PM EST. This block of rooms will be held until one month before the meet. This is not a pet friendly hotel!! Cancellations accepted up to 24 hours before the reservation date. If you desire to stay longer let them know at this time as this is a very busy period of the year. Camp ground information in separate posting.

For those that prefer to camp, the following RV campgrounds are located one mile South of the meet hotel and just across the creek: http://www.twinmountainrvpark.com/index.htm

http://www.foothillsrvparkandcabins.com/

http://www.stayriveredge.com/

These are full service campgrounds located just at the edge of Pigeon Forge. Some have camping cabins and full service cabins at the same location. Contact them via their website for information and registration.

25 Year Honda Owner & Pizza Man - Since I will be equal driving distance to both meets I would like to split "prizes" leftover from the NC Meet from last fall. Please PM me "shipping" addresses and I will forward them in a couple of weeks (when I'm back in Virginia).

I'm very torn which meet to go to, but I need to get up to PA. to scratch some headstones and do some genealogy research, so PA. it is. From the threads, seems like both Meets are shaping up to be a good time.

It may seem like a ton of work at the beginning with locations and ironing out the arrangements and even after you’ve thought of every last detail and have all those loose ends covered, certain things may change during the middle of the meet. Just go with the flow and most importantly, “Have a great time, take lots of photos and keep in mind, that’s what everyone is there for.” We’ll all be thinking of you guys out here waiting for your pics!!

It actually gets a bit easier after the first few meet & greets………..

Sorry to hear of the problems commonly faced when organizing a meet....and only multiplied by the economic issues. Fortunately June is still a ways off for some, so commitment is hard.

I've tried real hard to talk my wife into us going to one of the two eastern meets. So far, it's a hard sell. I don't wanna vacation alone! Unfortunately the wife isn't into the truck scene (although she has befriended a lot fo the So Cal group!).

If it falls thru, you guys are always welcome to come to Sedona! Grant it, its not a national meet, but with 9 states committed, 10 Comma Club Members and over 20 RLs we would love to have you!

Good luck on the meet!

Come on Keith! We need a moderator at this meet! If we can't have Gary Flint....you would be a formidible replacement! Besides, you wanted to go to Vegas, right? It's only a few hours away!!

I am not ruling out the Mid-South meet or the Atlantic meet yet.....as soon as other vacation plans fall thru, I might be able to talk the wife into something on the east coast...

We are putting money away this year for next year's Sedona's Meet; although we wish we could have gone this year. That means the one cat that requires medical boarding will be taken care of no problem, while we will have someone watch the other three. The hotel money that we would have spent will be used for the gas tank and camp grounds! So we should be good to go! :)

Can't wait until next year. Is it here yet?:D

OK guys and gals, less than 90 days before the 2009 National meets. We will soon have to start planning the details of the events. Plenty of time to come and join us; keep in mind that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is within 1 days drive for 1/3 of the US population. Easy access via I-40, I-81, and I-40. Very centrally located for most of the mid-south and eastern states. Come join us. PM me for any needed information.

I will be contacting the hotel in the next day or so and release the rooms they are holding. Cancelleation of this meet is very likely!!:(

When making reservations at the Best Western, be sure to tell them you are with the RL group for pricing and to get in the new part of the facility located in the rear. There is a tunnel to drive though to get to the back parking area.
Here is the link to the motel http://www.bwplazainn.com/ The rooms they are holding are called Mountain View and will have 2 queen beds, microwave, fridge, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, balcony, and all are inside access with elevators. Ice and vending on every other floor. See typical room photo below:

Early on we tried to get the Honda Plant in Lincoln, AL to confirm a tour to coincide with the National meet. They would nver commit so I canceled via e-mail many months ago. Got this e-mail this morning:

We have a tour scheduled for June 26, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. Based on a Honda North America directive, all our manufacturing facilities have stopped giving public tours in response to the Swine Flu situation. Because of this directive, your tour for June 26, 2009 is cancelled. Please reply to this email as confirmation of receipt.

Thank you for your interest in Honda Manufacturing of Alabama. We apologize for any inconvenience our cancellation has caused you. We look forward to seeing you in the future.

swine flu... hahahahaha... what a bunch of nimrods. Every winter season, people get the "regular flu" (and die from it as well) and no one gives two hoots, and if wanting to be technical, people are packed into airplanes all day, everyday in this fine country... Way to go Honda, absolutely brilliant!

If we had been able to schedule the Lincoln tour and get reservations at the Lake Guntersville Resort (very nice place) and get this late cancellation due the pig flu, there would be a bunch of highly p!ssed off folks!!!! Wonder if they thought they would catch it from us or us from them??

Skulli,

Have you or 25YHO gotten in touch with EOC or CRVOC boards? What about any Honda dealerships in the Knoxville/Chattanooga/Asheville area?

I'm trying to talk the owner of the dealership where I buy my Hondas into joining me. He has a 2008 DCP, which (I think) is his 2nd or 3rd Ridgeline. I may have more luck in getting him to knock another couple of grand off the 2008 white RTL-NAVI on his lot... ;)

Sorry everyone for taking a couple of days longer in getting this draft done - it has gotten quite a bit busier at work - not to mention I now have about 4x's the added work load.

Anyway, here is the proposed itinerary for the weekend of our Meet. Please, please - read it over. If there is something that you would like to have changed or added or have other suggestions please share it.

Understand that we don't have to go by this itinerary, it is just a list of ideas of what to do for the days we are together!

DRAFT ITINERARY

Here are a couple of alternatives to the National Park road trip (weather related or otherwise):

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg, new for 2009, Lethal Weapons
http://www.ripleysaquariumofthesmokies.com/

Star Cars Museum in Gatlinburg, Dolly Parton’s Cadillac and Fast & Furious 4, Newest Displays At Hollywood Star Cars Museum, plus other popular cars.
http://www.starcarstn.com/

Between 1730-1830 refresh and meet for dinner
Between 1830-1900 dinner at Smoky Mountain Brewery-Pigeon Forge
http://smoky-mtn-brewery.com/

Remainder of the evening - the usual after dark activities:D

Sunday, June 28 – activities

TBD - Meet for breakfast before parting ways

Again, we don't have to go by this, it is just ideas. If you have ideas of your own that you want to add or want to change this up a bit post them up or email me or 25 YHO.

Thanks

Checked the tire pressure, 32 psi around

Picked up bottle of Tennessee sipping whiskey, and some red neck beer.

Two six packs of Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale are now chillin' in my ice box. I'll worry about the bottled water and snacks tomorrow. I stopped by Wally World to get "coon food" (i.e., Old Roy) for my father-in-law this morning & worked up a soaking-through-the-shirt sweat walking from my truck to the front door!

Who is all coming? How many trucks? Is there an official list of participants somewhere that I don't see as well?

I just saw this meet mentioned in another thread.
We're hitting Dollywood with the kids this weekend.
Won't get in til Sat. evening so will miss the festivities, but if your meeting for breakfast Sun. morn. I'll try to sneak out for a while.

Five trucks in Thursday evening plus larryr's Civic Hybrid. More expected tomorrow and Saturday. Heading into the National Park after breakfast. Some of us may go drive the Dragon, mainly to annoy the motorcyclists. Photos will certainly follow.

I am still on Central Time. My drive in was 9 hours, and I think oarnold and Fla-Vyk have me beat. My truck set an all-time mpg record from Gadsden to here (over 22 mpg); I think the painted engine cover made the difference ;)

A few low-grade pix from the Cade's Cover run. (At points, a whopping 10 mph!) Five trucks. JJ's Ridge is still lost somewhere in the park, we think :D

First, the line up at the National Park Visitors Center. Left-to-right: skulli, Fla-Vyk, oarnold, djeaux & 25YHO.

Now, I'm hitting the road in a little while for a 9 hour hammer back home. But this was a great time & I got to meet some folks that I've wanted to meet for a long time. It is such a rush to get to cruise through some of the most GORGEOUS scenery in the country with nothing but Ridgelines in front of me and nothing but Ridgelines in the rear view. And as the old song goes, "turn, turn, turn!"

My hat's off the old bald head to 25YHO and skulli69 for planning this gathering, and to everyone who showed up. Amazing folks & a real good time. The Great Smokies are beautiful anyway, and to enjoy it with a bunch of ROC-friends is like having your cake and getting to eat it, too.

Duncan & Frances, Tracy & Mike, O'Neill, Vyk, Larry, Joanne, and Dusty -- THANK YOU for making this a special, special weekend!

I have said it before, and I'll say it again, "I am the luckiest man in North America!"

For some reason I totally missed this thread and had no idea this meet was going on this weekend.

I would have come if I had known about about it......say last week. This has to be the best kept secret on the ROC.

Who is all coming? How many trucks? Is there an official list of participants somewhere that I don't see as well?

I'm embarrassed to say that I also completely missed this thread. :(

I just checked at it was about 4 hours from me... definitely would of made this trip. Is it too early to talk about the next one? :D Seems like a great time was had, and the scenery was great.

Here are the last 101 pictures - Some are my shots and some are Fla-Vic's

Thanks to Vic and Oneal for letting me ride along. The hybrid is great on mileage an handles like an Acura TL. It is not as nice as the Ridgeline.

25 YHO - my wife says she agrees with you.

I was hoping Keith would align on the Civic side but I guess that only if I had bought and Si, he might have more pity on my ride.

Duncan & Tracy:

The pictures are great and it tells me that Tony and I missed a good time. We are still working without a contract and they brought in a Mediator to try and resolve the disagreements on both sides. I am still recovering from Rotator Cuff surgery. Duncan & Tracy did a good job planning the meet. I wish I could have made it. Sorry you and others missed the thread!! Not sure how to improve on that situation. The location was finalized after we could not get commitment on a Honda tour at the Lincoln plant or find adequate accommodations an North Alabama. The 1st posting for the Smoky Mountain site was on 17 January 2009; numerous postings since that date. The ROC management would not/did not post in the meeting notice location for some reason after numerous requests. I find that it is not a problem to know what is going on with the ROC has I try to check on "new posts" daily or when possible. I seriously do not know what we could have done differently to get to word out. All I can tell you is that you missed a great time, meeting super people, and enjoying some of nature's best, along with having an opportunity to tame the Dragon.:) The dates for this/these meets were set by the ROC adm(s); had I known they were not going to participate I would have looked at dates that were more member friendly. This past weekend was probably the 2nd most busy weekend of the summer other than July the 4th; the lodging rates are out of site, 1 hour waits for dinner common, traffic unreal, and it was hotter than hell. In spite of all that it was a great event enjoyed by all.

25, I wish you would quit conspiring with my wife. I will drive it for a year then maybe another Ridgeline. Probably the dark grey. It's embarrassing to hear her ask the same question, "When are you going to get another Ridgeline?" This from a woman who thought I was crazy to trade a Silverado for a Ridgeline. No F150, no Silverado, no Ram, no Tundra - a Ridgeline the right truck for the once a month "I need a truck" the rest of the time I want an Accord driver.

I agree, I will be in another Ridgeline, after riding in the 09 with oarnald, he is correct , it is a lot quieter than the earlier models. The two tone dash points are different, He said it is growing on him. It is growing on me too.

Note to Ridgeline salesmen - Do not call me, I might give in.

No worries... I only have myself to blame. I dont think you could do any more to announce this, although maybe if the ROC admins posted it like you requested, some more would of attended. Who knows.

Glad everyone had a great time. I do visit the ROC every day and check out the new messages, but perhaps I need to pay a little more detail to the Southeast forum for any announcements.

For the inveterate map freaks, I switched my Garmin eTrex Summit into tracking mode at Chilhowey just north of The Dragon & switched it off at Deal's Gap. I then plotted it on an open source topo of the area... Scale is 1" = 1500 m. It really doesn't show all the twisties & chicanes, but you can get the idea. A couple of places, one false move would be a very long drop to the Little Tennessee River...

I tried to take it easy on you, Larry. We didn't even talk about: smoother shifting, quick start engine cranking, little more horsepower. When the 2010s hit the lots, either a 2010 or an 09 is going to have your name on it.

Great pictures, by the way. I enjoy seeing what each other saw and photographed!

In the meantime...

Glad to see and hear that everyone has returned home safely. We made it in later yesterday afternoon - had to do some shopping - tried to post last night; however, internet connection crapped out on me!

It was great to finally meet Joanne, Joe and Vic; it was wonderful to see Duncan and his wife Frances again as well as O'neil. We definitely had a great time, it was great to meet other ROC members from a different part of the country as well as to see others again and to cruise the countryside together. It was an absolute joy and what true fellowship is all about, without these types of members there wouldn’t be a club such as this; of which my husband and I are very proud to be a part of.

This was the third Meet that my husband and I have attended and the first that I assisted in organizing. Duncan did a great job organizing this meet and getting members together that were able to attend. It was unfortunate that Tony and Jimmy and others couldn't attend due to last minute things coming up, but that sort of thing just happens and you can't expect things to go perfect.

So for those members out there that seriously want to be part of something extraordinary and genuine the ROC is definitely the place. The next time there is a Meet close to your area that you think attendance is possible "Just Do It" - never know what you might miss!

Here are just a few of my favorite pics. Just so everyone knows, I am in the process of reviewing a BUNCH and I mean BUNCH of videos that I did during the Meet. Working on one now and will attach a link in a while.

Trust me, you didn't have to GTF out of his way. He was the last of three riders that got up in with us. I think it took them all of three minutes total to pass six Ridgelines one by one. The first guy through was great - he took the last two trucks at once on a 200 foot straight. Very quick bike, very experienced rider. And very entertaining for us, and I think he knew it.

Too bad oarnold did not close the gap!!;) Yes, I got a bad reputation for my gaps. But you'll see it is closed a couple of shots later.

And there are shots of us coming back on pages 93-95 (on the 25 thumbnails per page setting).

And, Fla-Vyk, that Jaguar (?) you saw at Deal's gap is on page 82.

Was there any reason that 07_trx's truck was not in any pictures? Was he to late to get in them. I would have like to see a few of his truck? You guys did a bang up job and I think it can only get better the next time....
These regions so did represent Way to go.......

It's a real shame the National/Regional Meet concept crashed. Over 17K members and a combined total of 22 maybe 23 Ridgelines. Why were there no other Regionals?

Neither Meet had any E's. So much for the Combo Theory!

Good point, Pizza Man. Like Duncan has repeatedly pointed out, we never got the Southeastern National/Regional properly advertised.

Another minor observation is that the national meet part of the forums is way down at the bottom of the main page listing, and people don't scroll down there, I think. The logical place would be up in the Events & Meets forum, which is where I kept looking even after I knew better!

Previous years I have always reminded them to put it at the top, helped some for participation.

Excuses seems to be the biggest deterent to participation

Actually we were told to post in the "International Meet" category. The whole thing was screwed up from the beginning, let's face it!! Admins selecting dates that are some of the most expensive times of the year, no admins or mods attending, a mod posting he would come but did not know what was happening, totally ridiculous! Let's get this site back on line and where it was a year or so ago!! I had a great time, the few that showed up had a great time. Maybe others would come if the mgt showed some interest!! End of rant!!:confused::confused:

I invited you down, Keith, but you declined ;)

We really could have used a decoy like a Honda Civic Si to keep the THP boys busy up ahead before we went through! (There was significant law enforcement presence on The Dragon. Whether it is an every day thing or was because of they guy getting killed, I don't know...)

A lot of that was probably my fault since I was in the lead most of the time, the RL slid through the turns so great and picked up the throttle instantly, and I never had a thought of shifting to D-3. Great ride, super response and braking, great truck.!!:)

Um, Keith, after searching around to make sure I hadn't missed something, I don't want to bust your bubble, but that's just the Foothills Parkway. A little 45 mph federal drive with scenic lookouts. At the very end, you can see 25YHO about to turn left onto US 129 & it's still about 3-4 miles to the tip of the dragon's tail.

There's a bit of a story about that couple. She obviously hadn't been riding her Harley long & had it fall over on her at the Park visitor's center. They were pulled over on the parkway working on it, so I guess she bent something. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing a single "tuner" type car on The Dragon, although we did see some pretty tricked out ricer motorsickles.

I think that big knot of THP we saw coming back was at the place where that poor guy went over the edge. That website says it was about halfway... A late-breaking item is that a sport bike rider crashed late Saturday & died last night from injuries. So there were two fatalities on Saturday :(

Pizza Man, E-ple are boring (as everyone who partecipated last year in Columbus already knows), so you would not want to meet them. ;):D
I am very sorry hubby and I were not able to come, due to work. It would have been a great excuse to meet some nice people and do some sightseeing in the great Smokies.

Looks like the only combo meet will be a one day picnic we are organizing on the 11th of this month in NW Ohio (St Marys Great lake). Most will be Es, and hopefully one Ridgie will join in.

Like 25YHO said, we only saw one bicyclist & he was down on NC 28. There are some bicycle photos on one of the photography sites & it looks like it's definitely for the pros or extremely serious amateurs. I would pay money to have a spot on a good overlook for that race, even more so than for sport bikes!
