Twintym 05-04-2009, 10:12 AM ***Please note that the dates in the poll should read July 10th & 11th, not May.***
The 2009 All-California meet will be held in San Diego on July 11th. We will be staying at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort on Coronado Island. Here is a link to this awesome hotel: http://www.loewshotels.com/en/Hotels/San-Diego-Resort/Overview.aspx. The place is right on the water and the grounds are beautiful. Since our good friend Gadgetz (Daryl) works there, we are getting exceptional rates. Here is a breakdown:
Rooms - no more than $149.00 per night (maybe less depending on number of rooms reserved)
Parking - $22.00 per day (may be substantially discounted, again based on number of rooms reserved)
Sunday Brunch - $26.00 per person (may be substantially discounted, again based on number of rooms reserved)
The reason the rates are not set in stone is that Daryl needs to present the whole package to the general manager. Once he knows how many of us are actually coming, he can discuss everything with his GM. Even if we get no further discounts, this is already a great deal for this beautiful resort.
If any of our EOC buddies want to join in the fun, just post here or let me know by PM.
We have set a deadline of Monday May 11th for all hotel commitments to the meet. After that date, rooms are on your own and no rates can be guaranteed.
Please be as certain as you can before indicating you will need a room as an accurate forecast is extremely important. Daryl is going out on a limb for us, so please be considerate of that. If anyone has any questions, you can post here or PM me. Thanks everyone.
Dan
meanmachine19 05-04-2009, 09:25 PM I just got my new schedule for the summer. I'm awaiting approval for time off before I can 100% commit (I don't foresee a problem getting the time off, just a formality).
As for hotel, again I may likely use a nearby timeshare depending upon availability.
I see Toobuku has suggested Sea World....I thought we would be hangin' on the beach or something less formal. So where we meet is important for me to know (Coronado Island vs. Sea World).

The beach is cool with me and less expensive! Did that just come out of my mouth? ;)

More money means more mods for the Raider!
RustyH 05-04-2009, 09:34 PM Do we make reservations now....or wait until the package deal is locked up.
Twintym 05-04-2009, 09:39 PM We will all make reservations right after the May 11th deadline. I expect Loews will establish a reference number for our group that we all use to make reservations. Until then, just make sure and vote on the poll above.
We need to let our EOC friends know about this as well. Tony, can you take care of that?

BruceRTL 05-05-2009, 09:55 AM My wife and I really want to come to this meet but (always a but!) this will be about 2 weeks after I'm discharged from the hospital. I'm getting a surgical procedure which will reverse the Ileostomy surgery performed this past February. Let's just say that I won't want to venture to far from a bathroom for awhile. We still want to come to the meet but I just have no way of knowing how much time I will be able to spend with everyone. Worse case, she will hang out on the beach all day and I will be in the room watching the food channel or something. So I will vote that both of us will be in San Diego Friday and Saturday and will brunch on Sunday. But it's possible we would have to cancel. I'll know more at the end of this month.

BruceRTL,
You can cancel without charge 48 hours before the arrival date. We also provide shuttle service (golf cart) to the beach and there are very new and clean restroom facilities at the beach.

Well, I got the time off work, so its now a matter of staying at a timeshare or Loew's. At $150/night + parking, we are inclined to use the timeshare nearby. We plan on staying a few days past the meet to do some other things in San Diego like Legoland, Zoo, etc. We tentatively plan on arriving Friday and leaving Wednesday, so we will be there...just not sure which place!
Is the Sunday brunch price the same for kids?

Kevin,
Still working on the pricing...will know for sure early next week. Also, we sell tickets on site for all of the local attractions. Brunch for Kids should be less...not sure of the price though.

Bruce....I've got you covered.....let me just check with the warden out in Florence to see if you can borrow one of the inmate portables so you will never be more than a truck length away from "relief" while driving out to San Diego and back. Good news.....it's even painted blue so it'll match your truck.

meanmachine19 05-07-2009, 11:17 AM Well, timeshare ain't quite working like I thought it would ( :o ) so I'll have to see what the Great Gadgetz comes up with....our only option is our Disney timeshare (vs. exchange, which is non-existent) but puts us almost 2 hours north. That would make for a short day for us on Saturday

I expect that Daryl will post up the finalized room rates as well as discounted parking and brunch very shortly. He is working really hard for us. More info shortly. Thanks.

Everyone needs to thank Daryl for his efforts on our behalf.
Dan
RustyH 05-18-2009, 02:01 PM So whats the deal...do we call the hotel direct, go through you, Daryll, what?
Twintym 05-18-2009, 02:29 PM I am going to compile a rooming list and then shoot it to Daryl. I need the following info from everyone staying at the hotel:
1) Real Name (as opposed to ROC screen name)
2) Email Address
3) Phone #
Please PM me with your info today if at all possible.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Daryl has really gone above and beyond for us. It's important that we don't have any cancellations since the pricing is all based on the total number of rooms and guests we have promised them. Our group will be a reflection on Daryl since he fought hard for this deal for us, so let's all be considerate of his efforts.
Please note that if any additional ROC or EOC members want to attend just for the day of the meet, that's fine. We will be working out actual meet plans shortly. I am working with Daryl to have a bonfire on the beach Saturday night. Other ideas and suggestions are always welcome. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Just cut it down to 12 to 20 inches long...the basic length for a fire wood.

Twintym 06-02-2009, 02:14 PM ATTENTION: Gadgetz (Daryl) had to sign the contract today for the hotel. Since I have not heard anything from anyone changing their plans, all reservations for rooms and brunch are now closed. We are now committed to all the rooms we have asked for and any cancellations will reflect badly on Daryl. Therefore, I ask that everyone who reserved a room to please not cancel. Daryl put a lot of effort and influence into the pricing and accomodations for us and we need to honor our commitment. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

What time can we check in on Saturday? are we all going to be grouped under one floor or are the rooms going to be adjacent to each other? Just wondering?

Check-in time is 4PM. I doubt that we will all be grouped together as the resort is pretty large. We are going to get an itinerary going soon that will have more information for everyone attending, whether you are staying at the hotel or not. Stay tuned......

Twintym 07-01-2009, 08:04 PM I'm working with Daryl now to decide the best meeting place for Saturday morning. The loose plan is to meet around 9:00 AM at a park nearby and hang out through lunch time. It makes no sense for those attending, that are not staying at the resort, to pay the $20+ parking fee so that's why an alternate location will work better. For those staying at the resort, we will probably head over there some time around 4:00 PM (check in time). After check in, we can take a swim in the pool or whatever activity appeals to you. Later we will meet up on Silver Strand Beach, across from the resort, for a bonfire. We will also look at doing a group dinner in the area for those that are interested. Most of us staying at the resort (plus a couple local members) will have brunch together Sunday morning as planned. I will post up more information as I have it. Thanks.

Hello,
A few weeks ago the fire pit rings were taken away...not sure if they're back for the 4th of July. It's been so busy around here I haven't had a chance to get over to the beach. There are bathrooms, showers (COLD water), a few picnic tables.

I checked out the area this morning...There is a park as soon as you go over the Coronado Bay Bridge (Northside) and a nice area called the Coronado Landing (shops, places to eat, and a small park) It has plenty of free parking. If you want to have a group dinner let me know and I'll have our Concierge help with that. Other activites for Saturday night are Marshmallow roast, Dive-In-Movie (move at the pool) which are standard hotel activities.

In checking Google Earth, I think you are referring to Tidelands Park (http://www.sandiegocoastlife.com/attractions/san-diego-bay/parks-tidelands.html). This link indicates groups of 25 or more require a permit, 30 days in advance. Looks like a nice place.

We'll be getting into Anaheim late Friday afternoon. I'll drive down Sat. morning and should be there between 9 & 10, depending what time we are meeting, where, traffic, etc. Not sure if wife and kids are driving down with me to SD - it will depend on what the itinerary is (or if there is none). It will be hard pulling them away from Disney for the day  even though we will be there a week.
There's so much to 'do' in SD and the aircraft carrier is one of several suggestions. If hanging out by the beach, or the park is preferred by the gang, that's fine too. I just want to know if we are doing anything special or just meeting at the park, so I can plan the rest of my day accordingly while down in SD.

I definitely will be hooking up with Jason - we see each other regularly. I can't wait to see it!
meanmachine19 07-07-2009, 07:55 AM Okay, only 4 days left until we meet.
Do we have a meet location or game plan yet? I'll be on the road early Friday and probably will not be online after tomorrow (with work, packing, etc).

Wish I had some answers for you Kevin.
I'm wondering myself.
I'm heading to San Diego early Saturday morning, I guess, and I understand check-in time at the Lowe's Coronado isn't untill 4pm.
What to do and where to meet until then?
Have no clue yet to a game plan or first meeting place.
Hope I can find everyone or someone - someplace Saturday.
This Thread has gotten so big that it's tedious to read back through it all but I did find this from Dan:
"I'm working with Daryl now to decide the best meeting place for Saturday morning. Thanks."
A meet at a nearby park has been mentioned along with other ideas.
Which park? - have no clue.
Maybe I missed something - still reading through Thread trying to find out which park or where to meet on arrival Saturday.
I have been wanting to do the Midway Aircraft Carrier tour ever since I read about it a few years ago and may just go do that Saturday morning.
I'm wondering if anyone else is planning on doing that tour?
Someone mention that the parking is limited at the pier for the tours and was checking on parking passes or discounts if I remember correctly.
I found this parking info from another helpfull post that gives an address for those with a GPS and a map for those who don't.
There are more than 300 spaces alongside Midway on Navy Pier (owned and operated by the Port of San Diego) for vehicles only. Parking rates are:
$5 up to 1 hour
$7 for up to 4 hours
$10 for up to 10 hours
$12 for up to 12 hours
Address for those with a GPS
910 N Harbor Dr
San Diego, CA 92101
Map for others: http://www.midway.org/Directions-Parking#directions
See you in San Diego soon.
e_piph_a_ny 07-07-2009, 02:40 PM Hi Joe, I'm also waiting for more information.
In post #125, Kevin said, "In checking Google Earth, I think you are referring to Tidelands Park. This link indicates groups of 25 or more require a permit, 30 days in advance. Looks like a nice place."
See the first google map below to identify where Tidelands Park (Mullinix Drive at Glorietta Blvd, Coronado, CA) is situated on Coronado Island.
Midway (910 N. Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA) parking is limited (see the second google map below). BTW, I'm interested in the tour and will drive down on Saturday morning. Maybe we can hook up.
In post #141, Daryl said "Parking is very limited in that area...I'll ask my friend who works for the Midway if he can get discount tickets and the best place to park."
(BTW, you can print discount coupons good for $2 off adults and $1 off children tickets at http://www.sandiego.org/coupon/Visitors/650)
gadgetz 07-07-2009, 03:35 PM To all:
I thought I was just responsible for securing the hotel rooms. Because of my heavy, heavy, HEAVY work load, I can't really help too much (SORRY). But if EVERYBODY can tell me by tomorrow who wants to go to the Midway, I will ask my friend if he can extend any discounts. PLEASE trust me on the parking I deal with that area every day. Parking is tight because of the Cruise Ship terminal, eating places, general visitors etc...Tied into the parking figure a few disabled and special permit spots. This past weekend a 12-15k person teachers conference was visiting the area and my friends walked there from their hotel because of parking issues.
So in a nut shell...tell me what information you need and I will TRY to help everyone out.
Again sorry...Daryl
Zcuda 07-07-2009, 03:49 PM OK count me in on the Sat Midaway tour if thats when everyone wants to do it. In post #138 I explained that I will be napping at the Tidelands park in my truck due to my early drive down time. I will arrive about 4-4:30 am. My truck is a Black 06 RT & there will be WOOD in the bed of the truck for the Bonfire. If you any other early birds want to meet me there Bang on my window when you get there & lets see how many of us can go do breakfast. I would imagine we can talk the resort in to letting us leave some of our trucks at the resort before check in ( for those of us stay there, maybe those who are not can drive us over to the Midway.. those who want to go that is. Just a thought.
Anyone who wants here is my cell number to contact me while down there etc. 818-219-8843 Later Jason
e_piph_a_ny 07-07-2009, 03:52 PM Daryl, no worries. I think everyone is just eager to meet and wants information to plan on. We're just picking on you cuz of your proximity. We are appreciative for facilitating the hotel and brunch discounts.
Let's wait for Dan to reconvene, he can post with all relevant information.

You can actually come to the resort and leave your bags with the bell staff. I MAYBE (and that's a VERY BIG maybe) to get some early check in rooms. That is solely based on when the previous guest checks out.
JOZ RIDG 07-07-2009, 06:02 PM Thanks Danny for the Midway coupon discount info.
Just printed two coupons.
Not sure we are going on the Midway tour yet - sounds like parking isn't good and maybe meeting at a park might be better considering legnth of tour and getting to the hotel early enough and having dinner as some have suggested.
We can talk about that later in San Diego.
Would be great to meet up with you and caravaning to San Diego.
I'll be going south on the 215 and I'm sure you'll be going south on the 15.
They merge in Temecula and we could meet there somewhere.
Winchester Road is the next offramp after the two merge.
Depending on what time you are leaving in the morning we could have breakfast there also.
It's only 15 - 20 minutes from my house but know it's further for you.
Also we could meet up and caravan with Dan & Pam (Twintym) if they want to.
They live only 3 miles from me and are probably taking the same route.
Will find out their plans hopefully soon.

Twintym 07-07-2009, 06:56 PM Saturday Morning Meet Location!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will meet at Tidelands Park located at Mullinix Drive at Glorietta Boulevard. Here is a link to park information and a map: http://www.portofsandiego.org/coronado-tidelands-park.html
I apologize for the lack of information. If anyone living in San Diego can help narrow down an exact meet point for us in advance, it would be greatly appreciated. Since I have never been to this park before, I cannot give an exact location within the parking lot to meet. I will arrive around 9:00 AM. Anyone that arrives earlier than that can scope everything out and pick the meet point. I will have my FRS radio on channel 6.0 as always. My cell number is (951) 314-0303.
Thanks everyone.

NO sorry about it Daryl - you have done plenty already and THANKS.
I'm thinking of doing the Midway tour as others are - always wanted to that but, I live so close - can do it another time.
I thought I read either here in this thread, or on one of the San Diego Links posted here, that you could park elsewhere and be bused to the pier.
Is that possible?
Again, thanks for all you effort and hard work on this meet.

Zcuda 07-08-2009, 03:28 AM OK there is a good chance that I may be the first one down there on Sat morning at the park so I will scope it out unless it has gates & isn't opened yet. Maybe someone who is going to be down there Friday evening could look around for us at the park & take some notes. If they do they can call me anytime because, I will be awake at work & can leave some info on the Forum before I leave work which will be about 3 am & drive straight down there. This way everyone driving down Sat morning can check the forum before they leave.

gadgetz 07-08-2009, 11:08 AM Good Morning!
I think the best place to park to see the Midway would be at Seaport Village. (http://www.seaportvillage.com/directions.php) It took me 6 minutes to walk from the parking area (far North/West parking lot) to the Midway this morning. There is plenty of parking and the first 2 hours are free with a validation that can obtained at any store or restaurants, after that it's $3 per hour. It's a nice walk with lots to see along the way. I will update everyone on the activties planned at the hotel this weekend. Is anyone bring young kids or pets?

==== U P D A T E ====
I forgot to mention a very important thing. Coronado has a really good police department, but they are pretty strict when it comes to traffic laws. The speed limit on the bridge is 50 mph, as soon as you get off the bridge it drops down to 25 mph The speed limit through town is [COLOR="Red"]30 mph and then switches to 45 mph near Hotel del Coronado, then 65 mph on the "strand" towards the Loews Hotel. There are a number of streets on certain days/times you can't turn on so use caution. If you don't want to drive over a long/tall bridge you can go through Imperial Beach (I-5 South to Palm Avenue), Turn West (right) on Palm follow all the way down to the Strand...go North approximately 1.5 to 2 miles. The hotel is on the right 4000 Loews Coronado Bay Road...pull a ticket from the ticket booth. There is plenty of parking in the underground garage.

gadgetz 07-12-2009, 02:28 PM Hello,
I just wanted to thank all of you for staying at the hotel...I hope you had an enjoyable weekend and had some time to relax and enjoy San Diego. You're always welcome back here...
Also, the hotel will be sending you a satisfaction survey to your e-mail address. Please take a moment to fill it out and gives us your feed back (good or bad). The following people made this happen (hotel staff). Deneda (Sales) helped me put the package together, Omar our brunch server and Juan his assistant, Devi (Reservations), Dave (Director of Guest Services) picked the nicest rooms, Barry (my boss who approved everything) and Ellen (Corporate Director of Food & Beverage) who gave us the very generous food discount.
I can't tell you how happy I was that you all came and spent the weekend here. Maybe we should do another one here (hint, hint Dan & Tony).
Thanks again!
Daryl

Even if we did not get any consideration, it was great spending the time at Loew's. As I told you, my next trips to San Diego, Loew's will be my first consideration from now on! When Nancy hit's Cali for any extended time, I will be giving you a call! It was good meeting the people who work for and with you. It was nice seeing Lydia again, it has been a long time. Thank you for all you have done.
Thank you to Dan for taking the ball and running with this All Cal ROC Meet and Great for 2009. It was nice to come down and be with friends and relax a bit. We may have to have next years SoCal Meet and Greet at Loew's. To be discussed later.
JOZ RIDG 07-12-2009, 05:56 PM Just got home.
What a first class operation!
Eeverything went seamlessly and I know it took a lot of work, effort and dedication to make this meet so enjoyable.
To Dan and Daryl, THANKS so much for your tireless effort, we had a great time.
Daryl had to be the busiest guy at the hotel to pull this off.
Thanks to Dan we even got free shuttle service from the front of the hotel lobby to our bonfire get together and back to the hotel!
Thanks Pam for the work you did on the meet T shirts, I love mine.
The Sunday morning buffet was excellent and the company even better.
And at a 50% discount!
The only problem was I ate too much. ;)
Thanks to all that made this meet possible and to ALL you ROC members that made it so memorable.
