This is about a 2006 RTS w/80K miles. The OEM Michelin's are done and I'm installing the Truxx 2"/1.5" kit and a new set of larger tires – most likely Michelin's but I'm sticking with the OEM rims. I’d like to sacrifice as little ride quality, and fuel economy as possible while getting the largest tire possible. I'm not looking for an aggressive tread tire as I primarily deal with sand.
I read the "Definitive Lift thread" and got an idea of the tires that work with the OEM wheels. I also got an idea of ways to mitigate rubbing by grinding the pinch weld and/or removing the mud flaps.
In additional searching I found some conflicting information on how certain tire sizes fit in various situations and how different size tires affect fuel economy.
What I'm looking for is the largest tire I can fit with the mud-flaps in place with the smallest negative impact on fuel economy. I read in one place that wider width is where MPG takes a hit. So if that is true I can go with 245/75-17 which will give me a two inch taller tire with the same/similar width and MPG as the OEM tires. The 245/70-17 was my initial choice at 1” taller than OEM but if I can get another inch w/o a major MPG hit even if I have to “edit” the pinch weld - I’d like to go that route(245/75-17).
I’ve got the lift in my possession and the cash for all new tires - I’ll be installing the lift/getting alignment and the new tires in the next few days (I hope).
I would like to hear any thoughts you guys have on what might be a good option.
Here is a list of the sizes I've seen mention of using with the OEM wheels:
