miketf1 09-01-2009, 08:48 PM first off hello to everyone at the ROC.. newbie here after picking up a 2009 White Ridgeline RTL..
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3440/3841834560_19e871381c.jpg
thats my 08 Scion xB in the back.. the ridgeline does the work and the xb just sits around looking sexy. :D
ive been on the boards since before i made the purchase and ive already done HIDs and LED-ed out the interior, bed, third brake, and tail lights.
the problem im having is that i cant seem to get the DRL to work. i know that the bulbs are 9005 so i picked up a pair from vleds (with the lovely ROC discount) but the dash throws up a warning to check the DRL and the bulbs wont light.
any ideas? did i miss any threads?
thanks!

Aren't L. E. D. lights supposed to have a resistor in line?

That's for the turn signals to combat the hyperflashing.
Al Nuggs 09-01-2009, 09:30 PM Greetings fellow 2009 RL owner.
I too did the V-LED conversion. (full interior and bed)
I also purchased the 9005 DRLs, in amber LED and along with it got the 9005 modules.
By themselve the LEDs we extremely faint and when I hooked up the 9005 modules in line (V-LED calls them modules, I assume they are some type of balast) I blew the DRL fuse (it can be found next to the parking brake).
I guess the #10 fuse is too week and I did not feel brave enough to up it to a #25 fuse to see if it would hold.
I ended up returning the 9005 LEDs and the 9005 moduels
As an alternative I got yellow 9005 bulbs and they look just OK.
Good luck.
By the way did you HID the head lights or the fog lights. and did you have any issue with fuses?

My guess is you need to purchase the power module... http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED/DRL-LED/White-LED/V-LEDS-9005-PLUG-N-PLAY-p6297704-1-2.html
miketf1 09-01-2009, 10:08 PM hmm... i might just try that power module.. i was talking to my scion doods and they said that the voltage might be wrong.. what the power module looks like is a voltage regulator...
but seeing what Al Nuggs says, it looks like the draw on the module might be too high... anyone know what gauge wire is run to the DRL bulbs? if the gauge wire is enough then i wouldnt be afraid to run a 15 or 20A fuse in replacement of the stock fuse..
Al Nuggs 09-01-2009, 10:20 PM Mike
When you installed your 9005 LEDs did you even get a faint glimer.
I got a faint light out of them but not enought to keep them in with out any help. I take it you do not have the modules.
Also, if you have "DRL" on your dash it means your fuse blew.
You did not mention if you installed HID in the fogs or head lights?
miketf1 09-01-2009, 11:23 PM ^^ thanks for the heads up about the fuse.. that makes sense.. ive placed an order for the module and ill definately keep this thread updated with any info i learn..
as for the HIDs i actually have 6000K HiLo in my headlight and 6000K in the fog light. i ordered from MobileHID cause ive had good experience with them for my xB. for the headlight they have a shroud and the cutoff is pretty good and they retain my hi-beams. the fog lights i just stole from my xb cause i had an extra set and they share the same bulb
Al Nuggs 09-02-2009, 08:37 PM Hey Mike
Any chance of getting some pictures of your HID Headlight install (specifically where you mounted the balasts)
I have been thinking about going HID. Are yours dual filiment (I think that is what it is called) can you switch from lo to hi beam.
Also are you happy with the 6000k, no regrets not going with the 5000K
Thanks
Al
miketf1 09-03-2009, 01:29 AM ill post the pics when i pull the bumper for the DRL module. i have a little regret going 6000K cause its a little blue.. while i didnt notice the blue-er color in the projectors of my xb i do notice it in the ridgeline. i should have known cause my friend with a tc has 6000k and i didnt like how blue it was.. guess i just blanked when i ordered!
miketf1 09-12-2009, 06:09 PM here's an update. i finally have had the time to do the install of the DRL module. i put them in and swapped out the fuse to a 15 but that fuse blew as well. when i go out and buy a 20 or 25A fuse ill put it in. i think the gauge of the wire is enough to power the modules.
as for the HID ballast placement here is where i put it.
doublesided tape to the underside of the headlight for the headlight bulbs

ran the relay harness wires around and its tucked away from view.
Al Nuggs 09-12-2009, 06:42 PM Thanks for the pics Mike
I did not realize you went as far as taking off your bumper.
From what I can see there is plenty of room.
Good luck with the higher fuses; if I were a betting man, my money would be on 25A.
When you get the DRL working post some pics.
Al
miketf1 09-12-2009, 06:49 PM i dont see why so many people tell me that its stupid to take off the bumper for installs like this.. taking off the bumper just makes the install cleaner and so much easier to hide the harness and the big ol' ballast.
miketf1 10-09-2009, 12:29 PM i put the 25A fuse in and the power module smoked out. i dont know how this circuit works so i will advise NOT TO PUT LEDs IN THE DRL FOR NOW.
sorry it took me so long to respond. my xb has been acting up lately and that has been my main focus..
Al Nuggs 10-09-2009, 06:12 PM Sorry to hear it Mike
I ended up just using a yellow bulb.
Al
miketf1 10-09-2009, 06:59 PM im probbably going to go get a whiter bulb and put it in.
all i know is that i turned on the car and my mechanic saw smoke coming from around that area. for safety i turned off the car and pulled the fuse. i should have used a multimeter to see what the voltage was or to see if the polarity was reversed.
i still need to pull the bumper to see if there was any bad damage..
miketf1 11-02-2009, 12:37 PM i figured out the circuit. what honda did is wire the left/right DRL bulbs in series and thats what allowed for the DRLs to be dim even with a 55W bulb. so i made 2 things. first was a relay so that i could get the signal voltage from the driver side bulb and so that the LEDs could be powered straight from the battery. second i made a jumper from a plug that i took from the burned out DRL modules.
so here is the final result. sorry about the cellphone pic and the dirty ridge. its been on a long journey.

the only problem now is that the DRL error light is still on the dash. i think its cause the relay draws no power and the computer thinks that the bulbs are out. im still trying to tackle that problem.
