: Huge Transmission Problem

Ok so i worked on cars for 2 years before joining the navy but i know nothing about hondas transmission. Heres what happened, so i was driving my truck at 45 mph and all the sudden out of no where she started hoppin and then it wouldn't even shift and finally wouldn't even go no where or even drive. I smelt tranmission fluid real bad and when i got out on the side of the road there was transmission fluid everywhere. My question is does honda automatic transmission need fluid to even shift or complete any function like a hydraulic transmission would?? Hopefully somethin was loose and popped off and i dont need a brand new transmission in my 06 ridgeline with only 57k miles. I am so broke and I hope and pray that i dont need a transmission because i would have to wait for like 6 months to get a new one after i come back from afghanistan. :( any answers would help and i thank you in advance

The short answer is the transmission won't do anything if it is very low on fluid. You might not need a tranny. You have to determine where the leak is. Could be something simple like a cooling line. It's all speculation until you find the leak.

something to look at. There was a Honda notice of some sort on the situation in this post. I cant seem to locate the copy I had, perhaps someone here still has a copy? Something to do with the threads stripping right off a transmission cooler line.

It's good it happened at 57,000 miles. 5 year 60,000 mile power train warranty should cover it.

i dont have a warranty. i bought it used without one. I plan on looking at where the fluid is coming from tomorrow when i have some light. I noticed the fluid under the truck under the drivers front skid plate right under the from bumper. Hopefully it is what was mentioned about the coolant thing. What i did find funny when it happens no vsa or check engline lights came on our anything. Will update after i look at it tomorrow

The factory warranty is 5 year/60k miles. You should be covered, even used.

VSA/check engine lights have nothing to do with the tranny. There is a tranny fluid overheat light which is the only relevant indicator for your situation (AFIAK).

I agree with speed on this one, it should be covered. The only reason you wouldn't have warranty coverage is if you have a US truck imported to Canada. Your profile doesn't show us where you are.

I'm guessing US military is not going to be in Canada!

So i should call my local honda dealership to get more info and my eligibility on the 5 year 60k warranty. I didn't get around to checking where the massive leak came from today as I was driving to the store today and had a blow out on my wifes car. This week is not my week lol. Thank god its over.

USNRidgen, I had a CV boot start leaking at around 50,000 miles so I took it to the Honda dealer to have it fixed with a non-Honda warranty. The Honda guy called me and said my 5 year 60,000 mile warranty would cover it and they fixed it for free. I didn't even know there was a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty.

That's what I get for buying it at a Toyota dealer.

Your warranty still applies.

Hmmm, I'd say the part where he mentioned being deployed to Afghanistan AND has a user name that begins with USN. Maybe this part of his first paragraph too.. "..before joining the navy..."

But I could be wrong. I'm not familiar with the Canadian Navy. Can you enlighten me?

Same here (minus the CV boot), except mine was at a Mazda dealership. They tried conning me into buying an extended warranty and the guy said there's currently no powertrain warranty active anymore, it's only 3/36k. Pulled out my iPhone and Googled it. He shut up quick.

Really, we do have a navy...all 4 tugboats worth....actually thats not fair to the fine men and women who serve on them :) Actually our Navy is taking a role in the persian gulf and elsewhere pirate hunting.

Canada had purchased a used submarine from Britain called the HMCS Chicoutimi that caught fire off the coast of Scotland. I bet it didn’t have any warranty.

I happen to be in the Canadian Navy actually, I am an electronics technician. I work on all the radars and fire control systems on the Frigates.
We actually have a very efficient and highly trained navy and we almost always assume command of Nato task groups involving many US Navy ships as well.

We have alot of troops in afganistan right now actually and we have a couple ships currently deployed to high risk areas in the middle east.
Anyone with ACTUAL questions about the Canadian Navy or forces in general, feel free to pm me, thanks.

Hey guys thanks for the replys and Yes im n the USA, sorry i havent replied work has me so busy with workups. I finally got to look at it and i found the problem!!!! A rubber transmission line popped off. How? I have no clue. Maybe it had a transmission flush before i bought it because the fluid is still red. Now my question is what would be the best way to fill it back up with fluid. Through the dipstick or a flush????? Thanks

and hey about the canadian forces in afghanistan, the first time i was over there i met some canadian special forces who i must say are pretty bad ass. A sniper in the Canadian special forces holds the worlds record longest sniper shot which was done in afghanistan with a 50 cal sniper rifle at over 1.5 miles away. I always knocked on canada but after seeing their forces at work in afghanistan i was impressed, not a big number of them over there but they are combat hardened. So oorah Canada!
