:( I was so looking forward to my vacation this year! I have been getting acquainted a lady I could spend the rest of my days with and traveling to spend a month with her in Australia. But while at work, a day before my birthday on October 13th I ruptured my right bicep. I will be having an operation next week to get it repaired and will be out of commission for 6 to 10 weeks from work and another 4 to 5 months in physical therapy. So I have a feeling you guys on The ROC will see me on line a lot more because daytime television sucks big time! Love will have to wait! :(

I wish I can say it was something exciting or heroic like capturing a wanted suspect or saving a life! As usual, it was very mundane and I kick myself very time I think about it...Emptying a wheeled trash can into a dumpster! It was heavier than usual! Got it off the ground 2 1/2 feet before I torn the tendon!

Thanks Ron,

It will be unsafe for me to drive as well for a while. So since we are getting near the end of the year, maybe me can target a meet in late Spring or early Summer for 2006? I think everyone in SoCal I placed on my buddy list. We can get in touch with them and try to come to a decision on what, when, and where! What do you think? I thought the Santa Maria idea was cool, that way the NoCal ROC could possibly come down and the CenCal ROC will be right there and maybe make the arrangements for us?

Sorry to hear about your injury- hope the recovery time is quicker than expected. On a completely different subject, I noticed you've dropped your Raider identifier and moved to USC. Probably a smart move. We've got a big game this Sunday against your team. Never like going into the heart of the Raider Nation but Coach usually finds a way to frustrate Mr. Davis and the boys. I'll be thinking of you this Sunday. Get well soon!

Thank you,

It should prove to be a good game! I did not change the avitar because the Raiders are doing so poorly! I wanted to support the Trojans until after the Rose Bowl. I played on the drumline from 1974 to 1977 with the Trojan Marching Band. After they win the Rose Bowl the Raider Avitar will return! That is why my truck as well as my ZZ-R1200 is silver.

Got the word on Friday that the surgery has finally been approved and will be done on November 19th. After the surgery is done, I'll be out 6 to 10 weeks completely off work and 4 to 5 months of intense physical therapy. My little koala will be arriving on December 27 to help nurse me back to good health. (Oh Lord!) :D Until Jan. 14 or 15. After Heather leaves, I will go ahead and have the throat surgery I have been putting off for months for my sleep apnia. Rough times ahead but I have my friends to back me up and cheer me up! you guys look for me a lot after the 19th of November here! typing with one hand! ;)

Hello all!
I learned a lot about anesthesia on Friday. Drug induced sleep causes you to lose your sense of smell as well of feeling! The last thing I remember on Friday was looking at the clock at 13:03 and the anesthesiologist saying you are going to feel a slight burning. My reply was "oh hey, I already feel the burning" and tried to keep my eyes open and couldn't. The surgery lasted until 14:20. I awoke in recovery at 17:00. While coming out of my blissful slumber, I felt a lot of pressure around my neck(my arm in a sling). I'll tell you what, after not eating for 17 hours, hospital food is the BOMB!:D I never saw the doctor until Saturday afternoon when he let me go home. The surgery was successful.

Everyone should take martial arts, you learn to use both sides of your body. One still not as well as the primary side but it is not as bad. Preparing and eating food are my challenges. Washing is my failure! That is when you find out who your friends are! ;) I'll be off work until Jan. 2, 2006 then light duty and physical therapy begins! Heather is suppose to arrive here on Dec. 28Th. Things should get a lot easier then I hope. :D Vicodin keeps the pain away and I am doing OK thus far.

Best of luck to you while you heal.

There's a guy at work who just had the surgery for sleep apnea. He works for a peer manager of mine. The guy was constantly falling asleep at work, sometimes right in the middle of a meeting. The guy did fantastic work when he was awake, but it was still a performance problem. No manager wants to let a good worker go, but at some point this situation becomes intolerable. So the guy investigated this surgery, had it done, and it worked. I hope it does the same for you.

The Ridgeline is very smooth to drive with one hand only. Slower speeds and greater distances equals more reaction time! Tip of the day! ;) This thing is beginning to itch like crazy. Do you have a c-pap machine for your sleep apnea? I got one for mine sure beat the sugery op..... Hope you heal quickly and in as little pain as possible.
Becareful with the pain med and driving. Go for walks, to replace the engery you would use at work, again be careful of the meds as they will make you droggy and you could trip on your own two feet. Get a back brush for washing and use your face as your second hand when washing the good hand.... It works been there, sure beats squeezing the heck out of the wash cloth, or chashing the bar of soap in the sink...... Praying for ya too.

You sound like you have done this before! I have owned a C-pap machine for a long time. The ability to breath while reclined in a dentist chair was the deciding factor for having the surgery. Also by Monday, 3 days after the surgery, I was off Vicodin! I have a high pain tolerance so 3 days was enough.

For those who don't realize this, the body, when healing itself after medical procedures, tend too neglect other less important functions! Also pain meds constipate you! WORD TO THE WISE! IF YOU ARE TAKING PAIN MEDS AND RECOVERING FROM A MEDICAL PROCEDURE, TAKE EXLAX AS WELL WITH YOUR FIRST MEALS! God bless the women of the world who are mothers! Because I have a very minute fraction of what child birth is like! ;)

I discovered I was stapled! The itching I have been experiencing changed to annoying. Looking down inside my splint I noticed one of the staples starting to come undone. I want to remove it but I don't dare! If it bothers me more, I'll go to the hospital and let them do it.

You guys get we're shopping done early now! Thank you for the hygene tip!

Got rid of the splint but gained a brace locked at 90 degrees but I can bend upward for now and I can take it off to shower thank The LORD! I have to regain mobility in my right wrist first then everything else will follow in 4 weeks. My arm is very weak, can't hold the pyton up! ;) I will use the sling from time to time. I'll still be off work and have to wear the brace for 4 weeks. I've included some pictures for the first day to this one of my injury.

Yes they did! Workman's Comp sucks especially after the bad people abuse the systems, the people like me who want to get well have to pay the price for waiting. I had the accident a month before the surgery was done. Should have had it that same day if not week!

That type of story from worker's comp is so common. It dreadful how worthy people have to fight so hard to get what is supposed to be provided by WC, it's purpose for being. My brother used to work for them as an investigator until he couldn't handle the pressure to get people disqualified.

TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, THE PARTY'S OVER! ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END! UNTIL JULY AND OR NEXT DECEMBER! :D

I took Heather to LAX yesterday at 1100 and said G'day until this July or December when I go there to visit. Already missing her. The girl cooks well and healthy! How back to the grind. I have therapy twice a week and I am recovering well! The medicine I am using on my scar is making it smaller and my pronation in my arm is increasing.

I may be back to work in February. While I was off from my regular duties,
I picked up 2 off duty gigs! One at the Home Depot Center that is just waiting there for me, once I am back to full duty. The other is related to what I did for the last 8 seasons. I won't be working security for the Los Angeles Dodgers this coming season. I'll be going it for Major League Baseball! These are some of the things I have to consider if I choose to live here or move to Australia once I check it out and find a job!

I hope everyone's holiday was great! I made the best of mine! :)

Here are some pictures of Heather and I going the site seeing thing! We are at Shoreline Village, The breakwater behind Heather is across from the Korean Bell in San Pedro, and We are on the road toward the Griffith Park Observatory. She really wanted that shot of the Hollywood sign behind her! Enjoy!

So Glad to see you are getting better!!
Just remember to becareful on those off duty jobs, some of my worse encounters I had, was working them. Just the other day a rookie took down
a guy with his taser because he thought he was threating the clerk with a gun in a bag, turned out it was a hotglue gun that didn't work and this was the second time the guy had returned to the store to get a new one.
What do ya think of the kid my neighboring sheriff's deputy shot. Seminole County, FL in a middle school swat depty shot a 15 year old boy that was taking hostages with a gun and then pointed at the deputy. Turned out it was a BB gun the kid had painted black to look real. I'm praying for that deputy as he was doing his job, and felt his life was in danger.

I have been doing this a long time and I make it a point not
to work as hard as I do in my regular job, off duty! ;)

Because of what I do for a living, I would never judge that officer in that situation because I was not faced with that circumstance. I will say this, they don't pay us extra to stop and verify if gun is real or not within 2 to 3 seconds. It was to be made in an instant!

Play guns are painted in off and unusual colors for a reason! What about those who would paint a real gun to look like a play one? Bottom line, That officer felt that at that moment he was in immediate defense of his life or his partners,or a citizen and he took action to stop it.

GOD BLESS THE OFFICER! GOD BLESS THE POOR SOUL WHO MADE SUCH A FOOLISH CHOICE!

<where's the dang html command when you need it?>

Making the decision to shoot or not to shoot is always "in the moment" and to have the bleeding heart liberals try to second guess the decision you have to make in 1-3 seconds (or shorter) is a crime, IMO. If YOUR life is in danger, take the steps necessary to protect it. Toy gun or not, the officer could NEVER know that is was or wasn't real. Seeing the various weapons that are make-shift in prison (anyone else see Mythbusters this past week?), I am surprised that there aren't more officer involved shootings. Are there mistakes made? Yes - that's part of being human. Training, simulations, and experience are all for trying to get officers to make informed decisions in 1-3 seconds.

<stepping off of soapbox>

Toobuku - Sorry to see Heather leave - but glad you have lots of pics and good memories to remember her by! YOU look happy, happy, happy!

I saw a photo of that BB gun (in our local newspaper) and it looked very much like a regular gun. Based on that alone, I think that a large percentage of cops would have reacted in a similar manner. I hope that cop isn't crucified for a split-second decision made in a perceived life and death situation. Heck, even BB guns can be lethal!

Heck, even BB guns can be lethal!

I saw the same photo this AM. RIDGED, you made me think - I wondered what the # of deaths per year is via BB guns. I found an article regarding this:

American Academy of Pediatrics: Injury Risk of Nonpowder Guns (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/114/5/1357)

Basics gist: BB Guns (and other guns which launch projectiles at high mussel velocities) can kill or maim.

I'm sure a good lawyer for the police officer can find this information (and more) to make the case before the grand jury that the officer was justified for his actions.

Sadly, even if all of the evidence supports the officer's actions, the litigious nature of our society will likely force this issue into a courtroom. I hope you are correct.

It sure looks like the kid made potentially lethal mistakes by painting the gun and then pointing it where his actions could get him hurt. It is unfortunate for everyone involved, including the officer, but the officer did what he had to do under the circumstances. I feel very badly for everyone and pray that they all come through the situation successfully.

Hey Toobuku, thanks for sharing your pictures! We were just down there last summer and did some of those same sightseeing things. When we were there, the old Griffith Park Observatory was being remodeled and there was a temporary modular instead. Is the main building open now? That's pretty interesting stuff.

Also, we drove up a street that went to some horse stables right below the Hollywood sign, where there's a trail up close to it. Do you know of that place? It's beautiful up there, and you can really get a closeup view of the sign and a great view of LA.

The remodeling continues. I had not been up there since my city wide crime fighting days (Metro)! The main building is still closed and I have never ventured to the trail you speak of close to the hollywood sign. Did a fly by in our air unit in years past. That was the closest I have ever been to it.

I did a search and found the stables, called Sunset Ranch Hollywood. They have sunset rides. Beachwood Drive is the street you go up, just some residential street that you would never know leads up there. They have directions on their website. You don't have to go to the stables. There's a parking area where you can get out and hike up the trail if you want. You only have to be on the start of the trail to see the sign close up.

Well my ROC family, I think this thread will be locked after next week. My physical therapy is going better than the doctors expected. I knew I would heal quickly.

They have me lifting weights now up to 12 to 15 lbs for most of the exercises. I have one more P.T. session on Monday. Follow up with the surgeon on Tuesday and if I get my way, back to work, overtime and off duty work! That way, I can work toward my trip back to the land down under again and pimp my truck a bit more! :D

This is what my scars look like now and still improving. Thank you all for your support during my time off from work!

Tony -

glad to hear things are going so well! Scar looks "good" (do scars ever really look good?) and nice to hear that your PT is going well. The weights are probably not what you are used to, but you will build back up! Get back to pimping your ride and planning that trip. Take care!

Great news Tony, Very Cool! now you can focus on getting all us SoCal ROC-Heads together for a second meet!

I was hurt that the one EOC meet I did not attend, 3 ROC members showed up at! :( Maybe we should just meet for lunch on a weekend let's say Dana Point, Laguna or Newport Beach to start? Going south seems to get more of a response. I am going to be at Seal Beach with the track club I coach on February 18th after an All Comers Meet at CSULB. That could be an option as well!
