: Transmission fluid low
ScottK 10-17-2010, 07:57 AM My Ridgeline has 24k on it and while in the garage I checked al the fluids since was on level ground. To my surprise the transmission fluid barely showed on the end of the dip stick. I looked under the trunk and cannot find any leaks or other signs of loss. Anyone have any thoughts as to the loss issue? "Supposedly" my dealer checked it during it's last oil change 2k ago.....
Stackedape 10-17-2010, 08:02 AM You did check this while the truck was running correct?

You mean of course after it was run until hot, then engine shut off for 60 seconds...
yes, if it was stone cold that might be why it is a little low. If it gets really low you will notice it when driving/shifting. No problem, just take her back and get it topped up.
ScottK 10-17-2010, 11:12 AM I did check it while it was warm.

I've seen large variances in the level with temperature changes.

ScottK 10-17-2010, 06:23 PM the best way to add fluid still through the dip stick?

Either that or via the fill hole. If you use the dip stick, be careful that you don't drip ATF fluid on the starter just below.
hondaloyal 10-17-2010, 08:12 PM for small quantities dipstick should be okay; get a good funnel. If you change your own ATF you need alot of patience with this method. Better to use proper fill hole, but do you have some good wrenches for this plug?

That is the way every other car I've ever worked on is, but not these evidently. I went to check mine today while it was running, and almost lost a finger in the radiator fan. As others may have found out, there isn't much clearance there. That is why I searched here on how to do it.

YEOW! I was just reading another thread about "setting up your own safety" and right here is the object lesson. Man, I'm glad you're okay and you still have all your digits.
carolinaridgeline 01-27-2011, 12:50 AM Thank you for sharing Speedlever.
Does anyone know how many of ounces of fluid it takes to to move the level of ATF fluid from the bottom of the dip stick to the lower mark level and then from the lower mark level to the upper mark level?
Does Mobil make Honda's ATF fluid?
Thanks

Please, do yourself a favour and only use the correct Honda-branded fluid. Honda automatic transmissions are very sensitive and do not behave well with substitutes.
speedlever 01-27-2011, 08:58 AM Agreed with Ian. It's just not worth the uncertainty factor to substitute 3rd party fluids. There are only two fluids I get as non-Honda: motor oil and gear oil for the transfer assembly. Otherwise, I strictly use Honda fluids for brakes, coolant, transmission, and VTM-4.
But I think you were just asking a general question about who makes Honda ATF. I have no idea who makes it.
Goodview 01-27-2011, 09:52 AM It doesn't take much to raise the level (compared to the way the oil dipstick works).
Start with about 1/5th of a quart and you should be close. As it says in your Owner's Manual, do not overfill.

general question only
Thanks

carolinaridgeline 01-27-2011, 10:32 AM Exactly,
Your unit of measurement for reference, assumpition are you at the bottom of the dipstick or starting at the lower mark?
Thanks
