: Advertisements on our forum
BillB 12-09-2005, 11:53 AM Maybe I am brain dead, but has there always been pop up advertisements happening in this forum from sponsors? I understand the need for sponsors, but pop ups make me feel a bit used. I would prefer to not have pop ups or subliminal advertising and just be trusted to do the right thing and use sponsors when buying a Ridgeline product.
Trizzane 12-09-2005, 12:20 PM Have not seen any pop-ups here. Would doubt there would be any. Maybe you need to run one of those programs to sweep your machine, adaware or whatever it is. Don't think there are any coming from this site tho. Anyone else have them?
BillB 12-09-2005, 12:31 PM I definitely have them appearing and they are from one of the sponsors - Burtman. What I think is happening is that the pop ups only occur when I am in the Accessories sub forum. If that is the case, then someone must have thought about where and when these advertisements would be acceptable to occur.
jim270 12-09-2005, 12:36 PM Are you using the Firefox browser? It stops ALL popups. You can download a FREE copy at:
http://www.mozilla.com/
I have been using it for about a year and I do not get any popups.
Just a suggestion.....
MarkF 12-09-2005, 12:37 PM I had winfixer pop up everytime I logged on to this forum. It was a devil to get rid of. For awhile I thought I got it from here but it was not the case. I too recommend sweeping for virus involvement. Have seen no ads on here whatsoever.
Grok Lobster 12-09-2005, 12:38 PM They are not pop-ups. It is standard web advertising. If it seems to pop up on your computer, I'd say you just have a slow computer/connection.
DoctorJ 12-09-2005, 12:42 PM I don't get any popups not even warnings of a popup. I think you may have adware on your system.
TheRidgester 12-09-2005, 01:31 PM I see at the top of the page normal ROC stuff, but it's pretty non evasive and does not appear obnoxious. Other that that, there are many pop up blockers that are free... Google, yahoo and even most service providers have them...
BassBud 12-09-2005, 01:52 PM No pop-ups here either. I also use Firefox (free at http://www.mozilla.com). You can still keep IE on your desktop for downloading Microsoft updates, etc.
BillB 12-09-2005, 02:16 PM I agree that what i am seeing is not your classic "Pop Up" that adware type software eliminates. It seems to be integrated into the sub forum dealing with aftermarket accessories only. It seems to change periodically and now shows the static HandA advertisement, that you can click and get their web site. What I saw before was a moving, changing advertisement for Burtman that was not so "unnoticeable" and was moving around and a bit distracting. Now, I do not begrudge someone from making a living, I just thought I was a bit more immune from being marketed to in this web forum - I may have been naive.
DoctorJ 12-09-2005, 02:32 PM Some parts of the forum do have sponsors and there are banner adds at the top of those pages

I think that you're being thrown a little because the Burtman banner ad doesn't have a border. You initially see the Burtman name appear and it kind of looks like it's floating in white space. It's then followed by some of their products. There have never been any pop-ups or floating ads on this forum, just static fixed ones. Left-side 'Ads By Google' were tried for a day or two, but wasn't popular. I think that T Mac has done a great job of balancing the useability of the site with the commercial necessities of keeping it running and free.

How do you think this forum exists? The maintenance, the upgrades, the software, T Mac's time and effort -- all this costs money. Money, in the case of this forum, comes from people who pay to have their advertisments posted. This is very common everywhere you look in our society -- on the radio, there are commercials. On TV, there are commercials. In newspapers and magazines, there are ads. Why would the internet be any different? Just cuz it's free for us to use it doesn't mean it doesn't cost money to put it out there, keep it out there, and keep it running.
No pop-ups here. I use Safari (for the Mac).
BillB 12-12-2005, 10:02 AM God forbid someone has an opinion in this forum that has any negative connotation - be it towards the forum or the Ridgeline. A guarantee that you will be misunderstood or words put into your thoughts that were not there.
Long Gone 12-12-2005, 10:06 AM Before we catch on fire here, what kind of pop-ups do you get BillB?? Are they separate windows that open up when you come onto the ROC or are they embedded in the top of the forum topics??
Curious minds want to know so we can straighten out the problem for you. :D
arteegee 12-12-2005, 10:14 AM Marvelous. Always the picture of decorum, LR.
mayfielh 12-12-2005, 10:22 AM Before we catch on fire here,
Nice choice of phasing here. Let's not flame / alienate another member of the ROC instead of trying to understand the intent of the post (i.e. FireRob).
For what its worth I use IE and just have the standard banner adds at the top of the page.
T Mac 12-12-2005, 11:06 AM Bill and others... Bill is seeing animated banner ads, not pop-up ads. The Burtman ad, for example, is animated but it only appears in one location on this forum currently.
There are no pop-up ads. There have not ever been pop-up ads. We do sell ad space on our site and forum but we look for ways to make it less obtrusive and more convenient both for you and for the advertiser. After all, they're hoping to get some business from sponsoring this site/forum/club as well.
So, Bill...I hope this helps. You're right that the ads only appear on certain areas and that is because those sponsors have made arrangements to sponsor certain categories. As an example, H-and-A Accessories is a sponsor of our "accessories" category on this forum.
Thanks to everyone for their support.
BillB 12-12-2005, 11:21 AM Thanks for explanation T-Mac and for your dedication to the forum. Like I said in my original message, I know that some advertisement is needed to keep the forum afloat and it was and still is my opinion that the less and least noticeable you can get by on the better. This is a very popular forum and enjoyable to be part of and I hope it stays that way for all.

We are working hard to keep it that way and have big plans to take us well into the future. Everyone here can help by spreading word about this site/club to everyone they know, whether they be Honda dealers, truck lovers, other Ridgeline owners, etc. 2006 will be a special year.

Hey Bill..I am glad you got it worked out. TMac is the best isn't he?? Have a great day!!
TheRidgester 12-12-2005, 11:58 AM I know our forum Advertisers, already contribute to the site & it is greatly appreciated! Since charity is tax deductible, perhaps they can pitch in for the ROC toys for tots :D
I can only speak for myself, but I would remember those that helped and place more orders with them ;)
