: Glove box rattling
I had dealer tighten glove box but the rattle didn't go away. If I push on glove box when it is rattling the noise goes away. It is going to dealer again but I have read some put foam around edges to stop rattle.
Where it is a new truck I don't want foam put around edges, is there another fix? My 2008 did not have this issue.

I thought I was appending two different posts (my message is that this is a pervasive issue with RL owners)
speedlever 01-24-2011, 08:35 AM What I was trying to say is that the two extras you provided were also in the first linky above. Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?
Here's the direct link to that first linky:

Ahhh…that's how it's done. :act063:
I'm just going to keep up the good work, then. Maybe 40 more posts till I get to the next level, and then…nothing. Do it all over again to get to 1K. :act006:
cdepuydt 01-24-2011, 09:23 AM Just remember to check the contents of your glove box...the stuff inside could be causing rattles, also.
I had an annoying rattle and, like the OP said, it would stop if I pushed the glove box in and held it. I dinked around with the screws for the latch, and all that, to no avail. One day I was looking for something and took everything out of the glove box and then put it all back in and...low and behold, no rattle.
I figured out...I had a CD case resting up against a golf tee, that gave it a pivot point, and the CD would tap against the inside of the glove box...cause the annoying rattle.
So, anyway, just something to look into...
Mine rattled, here's what I did. Went to the Home Despot, got a short role of 1/2 black weather stripping foam rubber, cut two 3 in lengths, opened the glove box and stuck the weather stripping on either side of the box opening. No more rattles!:act060:
Thanks for the feedback. I have removed all the goods and it still rattles (Did this before taking into dealer). If I leave glovebox open there is no rattles. I will try the fixes that are suggested or at least mention it to the dealer when they schedule me in for the new headliner, new left rear shock and out of alingnment hood. Seems more defects than my 2008 model. I have less than 10,000 Kilometers on my 2010. I will let you know how I make out.

TarheelGrad1998 01-25-2011, 05:48 PM Do post if you figure out how to fix it. I have the same problem that I haven't been able to resolve (though in truth, I've yet to have devote much time to it).
The rattle is annoying, but also, when I have the light on, it causes the light to flash in the glove box like it's inhabited by aliens.
WadeHampton 01-27-2011, 12:48 PM Had the same rattle on my 2010. After the 4th visit to the dealer they replaced the glove box and all its parts. That rattle is now gone. I still have a rattle in the dash right behind the speedometer. This will make the 10th visit to the dealer for weird fit and finish issues.
I'll try and take pix and post tomorrow on where I put the weather stripping to stop the rattle.
bobpres 01-28-2011, 09:28 AM Here's how I fixed mine.
1. Open glove box and remove all contents.
2. "Drop" glove box door by removing two stops (one each side -- see thread on cabin air filter replacement) and damper arm.
3. Loosen two 8mm bolts (one each hinge).
4. Glove box door is adjustable -- side to side. I simply centered mine.
5. Retighten 8mm bolts.
6. Reinstall damper arm and side stops.
7. Reload junk neatly -- paying attention to things that might rattle.
Best of luck!!!!

zepada 01-28-2011, 05:06 PM Solved my rattle with two 1/2 inch strips of felt used for furniture feet. Self stick on back, placed one on each side of the glove box opening. Rattle solved for less than a dollar.

I had same problem.. all you need to do is spray some WD40 on a rag and wipe around the entire outer frame of the glove compartment where it makes contact with the dash and problem solved...

I did the same thing with my '08 RL. Pretty easy fix. It's just a nice, little adjustment that's easy to do. No need for all that weatherstripping.
TarheelGrad1998 01-30-2011, 11:39 AM I managed to get to this today. I was able to loosen the two bolts that give you some side to side adjustment.
But, is there no front to back adjustment? My main problem (I think) is the left side of the glovebox doesn't close "in" enough (i.e., when closed, it sticks out farther than the dash).

Sure enough, it seems my rattle is better, but the light in the glove box continues to flash.
Any ideas?
speedlever 02-01-2011, 07:49 AM Cut out a small piece of plastic and tape it to your glove box where the switch hits it. When you find the right thickness that keeps the light off, glue it on.
FWIW, I just checked my GB and have no rattles or flashing lights and the edge seem pretty even across the lip of the GB where it joins the dash. How does yours appear?

Well, that would certainly fix it. But it's so...hack...
I'll try to post a pic later. But it's definitely not even.
speedlever 02-01-2011, 08:46 AM I agree about the hack.
Is your rubber bump secured all the way in on the driver side of the GB? Looking more at my GB, I can tell that the driver side edge sticks out a little bit compared to the passenger side. But not enough to cause any rattling or flickering light (not that I've noticed anyway).
Not sure if this will show anything useful or not:

e_piph_a_ny 02-01-2011, 12:47 PM I had a erratic rattle so decided to use bob's technique, and found that the damper arm had fallen off! (thanx to truckin' for using her pic)
TarheelGrad1998 02-07-2011, 04:21 PM This image is about as clear as I can get it, but it should be pretty clear that the left side isn't as "closed" as the right side. Thus, there's more play on the side where the light button is.
I'm about ready to go with a "stick on" fix, but hoped there was some kind of adjustment.
I'm pretty sure the side to side adjustment has fixed the rattle, and made the light come on less frequently...but was no fix.
TarheelGrad1998 02-07-2011, 04:24 PM Here's one of the side, but it came out kind of blurry.
speedlever 02-07-2011, 04:37 PM Yeah. I can see that left side protruding a bit. Mine does it a little, but not to that degree.
I would think that you should be able to adjust that out and make it right. I've never messed with the adjustment on mine. So everything is possible to the man that doesn't have to do it. ;)
I need to take a shot of mine straight on and from the left side. I'll try to remember that tomorrow when there's some light.
TarheelGrad1998 02-22-2011, 06:53 AM Well, I finally broke down. I bought some of those stick on rubber pads, like you'd put on the foot of a chair, and stuck where the light button contacts the glove box. Didn't see the light flashing this a.m.
Not my preferred fix, but...should work...
e_piph_a_ny 11-01-2011, 11:32 AM I still had a persistent rattle that I could not isolate and kill.
I did all the previously posted cures but to no avail. The rattle would disappear when I applied pressure on the glove box lid.
After thinking this out, I fabricated a rubber washer out of a rubber grommet (sliced the grommet in half, pic has one whole grommet and two cut halves below it). I placed the rubber washer between the glove box lock and glove box lid (see diagram).
This has the effect of forcing more pressure on the lid against the dashboard because the lock (lid) was further from the clasp (dashboard). See pic at bottom.
Wadda know?? It worked.
IanRTL 11-02-2011, 10:54 AM ^^^ I'm going to do this tonight. I've been getting a really annoying rattle over the last few weeks and I really didn't want to stick any felt pads on the inside of the glove box door. I have a few grommets sitting at home that I can use. Thanks!
e_piph_a_ny 11-02-2011, 11:28 AM I have a few grommets sitting at home that I can use. Thanks!
Choose a grommet that is smaller than the screw. This is important for Step #3. Otherwise the washer will fall out.
1. Put screw in hole in glove box lid
2. Push rubber washer against screw
3. Turn screw and feel washer creep up onto screw
4. Do same with other screw and washer
5. Place lock into lid
6. Screw both screws into lock.
