Whew..... I'm back!
Last Thursday we were hit with an ice storm. About a million people were without power.
Ours went down around mid-day on Thursday and came back up over the weekend. As of yesterday at 6:00 PM there were still 80,000 people (40,000 Duke Power customers) STILL without power in Greenville alone!
I'll post some pictures in the next day or so..... some are beautiful, and others look like a war zone!
It was great to pull up the ROC site and see that the Ridgeline is the Motor Trend Truck of the Year! :D :D

Heard about it on the news. Bummer!

I know the feeling. We had a bad ice storm last winter and it was devastating. Our area looked like it had been bombed   but there was also some beauty to be found in the ice formations. Welcome back! :)

Now, for the important issue, how'd the Ridgeline do on that ice? :D
Seriously, hope you and the family and friends made it through the storm OK. I lived in Memphis when we had a big ice storm there...not fun at all, and our power was only off 4 hours. Neighbors weren't so lucky (4 days).

[QUOTE=swampler]Now, for the important issue, how'd the Ridgeline do on that ice? :D
It was a bizarre storm..... tons (literally) of ice on the trees, but none (zero) on the roads.... Then we had freezing rain and it just kept piling up on the trees, but it never did ice up the roads.
The road issue was falling trees. In our neighborhood all of our roads were totally blocked by trees that fell across the roads. Coming out my driveway, both to the right and left I had two sets of trees down across the road (each way... 4 total). Beyond that (going both ways) there were additional trees down across those roads....
So, I just built a fire and left the Ridge in the garage! The freezing rain and falling trees kept going for about a day and a half...... which was the major issue for the power company (they would fix one section, and more trees would fall, either damaging what they had just fixed, or hitting another area). It was very "interesting!"
We were very fortunate!

I remember a storm like that in February of 2003. I was stranded in NC for 5 days because of it.

I remember a storm in December of 2002 in NC. THere were millions without power. I woke up (we were moving to PA and the hubby had already moved up... ) and it was cold in the house. Gas logs worked great! It took about 24 hours for me to get power back, but there were places that it took weeks for them to get power back on.
It took about 24 hours for me to get power back, but there were places that it took weeks for them to get power back on. This is why I have a backup generator (Honda powered :) ) for the house. In addition to the inconvenience of not having power, dealing with frozen and bursting pipes is a nightmare.

Just before Christmas in 1997 we had a storm that left us without power for several days. Luckily we had natural gas logs and water heater so it was not too bad. The day after Christmas we had had it with the cabin fever so we loaded up the F-150 4 X 4 and headed to the mountains. Storm damage all the way through East Tennessee but roads were fine. It looked as if a giant bush hog had cut the tops out of the trees along the NC and TN borders. We deceided to go across the Cherohala Skyway as a side trip to the Smokies and ran into snow covered roads at about 3000'. Snow kept getting deeper and when we got to the 5000/6000' elevations therer was 8" of snow, no traffic, and the most beautiful scenery ever. When we got down the over side into NC the roads cleared again and we had a pleasant trip up the Dragon and on to the Smokies. May just take the same trip again Monday or Turesday and hope for snow so we can check out the Ridgeline.

My daughter is a sophomore at Clemson. She finished her finals early and drove to New England on Tuesday. She said her roomates told her the storm was so bad, they closed school and postoned the remaining exams which were supposed to last until Saturday, 12/17.
Other than the speeding ticket she got on the way home, she was lucky!

North Dakota News
This text is from a county emergency manager out in the
western part of North Dakota state after the recent snow storm.
WEATHER BULLETIN
Up here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from a
Historic event --- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical
Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow,
ice and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles,
stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of
communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.
FYI:
o George Bush did not come....
o FEMA did nothing....
o No one howled for the government...
o No one blamed the government
o No one even uttered an expletive on TV...
o Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit
o Our Mayor's did not blame Bush or anyone else
o Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either
o CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or report on this
category 5 snow storm
o Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.....
o No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House....
o No one looted....
o Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something
o Nobody expected the government to do anything either
o No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and
No
Geraldo Rivera
o No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be
found
And
o Nope, we just melted the snow for water
o Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed
cars
o The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask
for a penny
o Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments
delivered it to the snow bound families
o Families took in the stranded people - total strangers
o We Fired up wood stoves
o Broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns
o We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work
or Die"
o We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us
out of a mess created by being immobilized by a
welfare program that trades votes for 'sitting at home' checks.
o Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never
fallen this early...we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.
