: AL Honda Production
msellers 07-06-2011, 09:04 AM From today's al.com:
Across the industry, numbers were mostly up from a year ago, according to automakers' U.S. sales reports issued Friday.
The notable exceptions were Japan's Honda and Toyota, which have significantly cut output amid a parts shortage that stemmed from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Among Honda's Alabama lineup, sales of the Odyssey minivan totaled 7,234 last month, a 22 percent decline from June 2010.
At the same time, sales of the Ridgeline pickup plummeted 62 percent, as 587 were sold last month.
Sales of another product of the Lincoln factory, the Pilot SUV, totaled 9,035, which was flat compared to a year ago
DeuceRon 07-06-2011, 10:31 AM That's interesting. A 62% drop is significant. It's also interesting how the number of Pilots is so much higher than Ridgelines.
I wonder what the comparison of Toyota Highlanders is versus Tacomas??
Good info. Thanks for posting it.
oarnold 07-06-2011, 12:26 PM Remember, these are sales numbers, which lags production. csimo told us earlier this year that production was reduced to switch the RL from the Ody line to the Pilot line. Though the picture is quite bleak, I think these numbers reflect the production reduction.
FWIW, Car and Driver web site now shows some spy shots of the new Pilot front end, though under lots of wrap.

Which begs the question: why spend the time and effort to switch lines if they're planning to discontinue the Ridgeline? Really only makes sense if they intend to replace the RL with something based closely on the current generation Pilot.

"And contrary to reports that it plans to discontinue its midsize-truck entry, “Ridgeline isn’t going anywhere,” said Sage Marie, American Honda’s manager of product planning."
Very interesting. I wonder if Marie may have made this statement some time ago, but it was only recently quoted in this article.

No corporate spokesman is going to speak ill of a product or imply that it will be discontinued before the company puts out an official statement. However, I would have expected a very vague, "no comment at this time" response if RL was scheduled to be dropped.
DeuceRon 07-10-2011, 07:21 PM I had no idea that the Tacoma sold so many units compared to Honda. Ouch..

Tacoma covers the entire small truck segment... from $17k stripper 2WD to $34k 4x4 double-cab TRD w/ leather. Honda is only chasing the upper end of that market with the RL.
