If the Pilot developement is a signal of future RL developement, we could see a 2WD RL with VCM. It probobly would add about 2 MPG to the highway EPA estimate. With its standard traction control it should have outstanding traction compared to all the 2WD rear wheel drive competitors. It ought to grab and go very well with the weight distribution usually heavy to the front. Totally blow away all the RWD competition, in traction. It should also cost less (perhaps ~$1.2K, like Pilot) than its AWD look alike.
~$1.2k + 10% better MPG doesn't seem like all that much; but, the total savings would keep adding up for any owners who really don't need the AWD.
Insurance might be a bit lower (2WD may seem more tame to them) too plus a little less drivetrain to maintain. Less driveline losses might add a wee bit of giddy up to it too.
I think it could be a big winner. I really hope to see it in the future.
