spdrcr5 01-05-2006, 07:24 AM Yes, you have read it right. One of the Element owners over on the EOC has volunteered to head up putting together a camping trip for the West Coast ROC/EOC Members. Her name is Miss Ellie, she lives in California and goes camping quite often with her Husband and their Element.
She is looking for someone to help her plan and organize what should be an awesome camping trip.
She is looking in the Lake Tahoe area for camping sites, she is mostly looking in State Parks because they offer the nicest sites. Only issue is State Parks she said don't generally offer cabins... is this an issue?
Please give us some feedback and some ideas, anyone want to jump in with both feet and help her put this whole thing together?
As you can see we want to get everyone outdoors and really enjoy their trucks and use them in the environments they were designed for. We want to make these annual events and move them around to different locations.
Throw out your ideas and lets get this camping trip off to a great start! :)
twinjogger 01-05-2006, 02:30 PM I'm in, as long as it's not in August. Any other time works for me. :)
BannedUser 01-05-2006, 04:27 PM And I can't do June. I'll be in Orygun having a meet with Webwader, mayfielh, and all the other good folks in the North West corner who is willing to meet with us Easterners. :D
kahnartist 01-05-2006, 04:46 PM I'd be willing to help with something---but not sure what!!. I'm in Nor. Cal and done a bit of camping up in Tahoe. Live in San Jose area.
I have a nice camping book by a well-known SF Chronicle writer (Tom Synstra). It has loads of good info in it. PM me here and I'll do what I can to get something rolling for both clubs.
dsowell 01-05-2006, 06:18 PM I'm down in the valley. I'd love to get out camping with some ROC heads.
Let's set a date soon so I can reserve it on my schedule.

You could always come to Portland in June for our meet Doug!! :D
dsowell 01-05-2006, 07:27 PM Sounds fun. My wife wants to go on a "little" trip to the Philippines in June. I am not sure if I am going so If I don't maybe I could come up there instead. That is a long haul for you.
kanji 01-05-2006, 08:11 PM Ooo..camping sounds like fun. Where & When? Is this a real type of camping or civilize camping? real type is hiking to a spot or driving to a spot, pitch a tent and dig a hole for restroom and nearest town is 30 min away? or Civilize type is, there is an outhouse type restroom with plumbing and pitching a tent and nearest town is 20 min away? Sound good either way.
Sheniferous 01-06-2006, 01:47 AM I vote for the Thornhill Broome Beach near Pt. Magu, CA.
It's considered a "primative" campsite, with some faucets, cold shows, a few portapotties, some tables, benches, and fire pits.
What's cool is that you get to camp right on the beach!

Here's a pic of my E at the campsite:
Broome Beach looks awful crowded to me. We are used to boondocking. Don't need a cabin as we tow a PU. Be willing to do a Tahoe run.:)
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-06-2006, 09:06 AM Hello everyone!
Just a brief line to let you know that the West Coast ROC/EOC camping trip will be happening at.. Lake Tahoe: Elevation: 6,228 feet, 12 miles wide, 26 miles long and can take 3 hours to drive around.
We are in the begining phase of checking out various campgrounds in the area (lake side) and I'll have a more detailed information on this later in the week end. Recreationally Tahoe is first rate in all areas. Hiking, Canoeing, Kayaking, Cycling, Fishing, Gambling, and Camping is extrodinary here. The time line for it will be late August or early September around the the time of The Burning Man Festival in Black Rock, Nevada some 2-3 hours away. There was a lot of interest by EOC members in Burning Man last summer, many may attend it and this time frame would allow crossovers to either venue.
Let me know if you have any special needs that I should be aware of.
Lots more info to follow.

Dnick 01-06-2006, 05:34 PM I'm pretty sure we can make it, no matter when it is (as long as we've firmed up the dates in the next couple of months). Tahoe should be interesting . . haven't been there in 20 years or so, and then just skiing. I would have suggested some nice areas a bit farther south in Eastern Sierra, but it sounds like you've already got some good idea of where we might go. I'll be in Bridgeport area for 2 weeks end of June first of July, but it sounds like you're planning this a bit later.
As far as planning, once you've firmed a time & place, I'd be glad to help "organize" a caravan of sorts for any of our members here in So Cal who might be interested in a joint run up when the time comes? I know we've got a lot of members down here, & I'm sure at least a few might be interested in this venture.
Hope to hear more soon.
Dnick 01-06-2006, 05:35 PM . . . also, I meant to ask, are there any mild off-road opportunities for us in that area?
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-06-2006, 06:55 PM Hi Dnick,
Yeppers. Lots of off roading around there. You could do the easy part of the world famous "Rubicon Trail" which begins in Tahoma which is a small village on the Cal side of the lake. I know some ROC members are just itching to explore thier Ridgeline's off road prowess. You'll be able to test your off road driving skills and get your fenders and paint all scratched up at the same time. (kidding you) So go for it! Your local body shop will be proud of you.
I'll hunt down some web links for you on four wheeling in the area. If I owned a Ridgeline I would be chompin at the bit to take it off road too. Vahalla!

Miss Ellie & Co. 01-08-2006, 10:07 AM Hi Guys. It's still too early to secure camping reservations at any of the State Park Campgrounds at Lake Tahoe. Febuary 1st at 8:00 am would be the earliest time to make reveravtions for the week end of August 25,26,& 27.
I spoke with a customer rep from Reserve America who handles reservation requests for these parks. He says week end summer dates at the State Parks in Tahoe are always in high demand and will fill up as soon as they become available to reserve. This means that there's no guarantee we can secure campsites there. It's a crap shoot.. maybe we can get em , maybe not too.
So then what? "Private Campgrounds" There are some good ones in the area too. We can secure campsites at some of these places now. I am thinking that maybe we should do just that. Waiting until Feb 1st to find out if we'll be able to get into any of the State Parks might end up screwing the chances of getting into these Private Campgrounds too.
So wadda think? Do we wait until Feb 1st and pin our hopes on a crap shoot chance of getting into a State Park or shine that on, and secure sites at one of the Private Campgrounds now? Personally I think we should.
Need to know your thoughts on this asap.

I do not know about Lake Tahoe state parks, but around here, there are group camp sites for 30 to 50 people. The trouble is, it is almost impossible for you to predict how many people will actually show up.
You can get more participants if the camp sites are pet friendly. We go to lake tahoe for ski trip but never in the summer. thanks for the planning. maybe I will have camping trailer by then.
Dnick 01-08-2006, 04:10 PM I think the "group" site is a good idea, presuming you can get commitment from minimum number of people required to reserve. You can always up the number as more folks sign up.
. . . or anything else works for me too. Yes, I'm easy.
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-09-2006, 02:11 PM Hi all,
Two private campgrounds are under consideration for the EOC/ROC West Coast Tahoe Camping Trip. We have human contact with one of them. The other one we are still waiting to hear back from as they are closed for the winter and only make reservations by phone.
Here are the campgrounds. Each has a website. Check them out.
The "Campground by the Lake": recreationintahoe.com gives you links to this campground
The "Tahoe Valley Campground": Tahoe Valley Campground.com
We could snag sites immediately at the Tahoe Valley Campground and they would love to have us stay there. They also say that the Aug 25 week end is a good choice and encourage us to consider that date. These guys have been great to deal with.

I wish I could make it but I already have a previous engagement if you can believe that.
Ellie it sounds like you have a winner with Tahoe Valley CG. There really aren't too many bad places near Tahoe any way.

Hey Sheniferous, you must be near my dad, who recently bought an Element exactly like yours. He lives in Ventura and went to the Honda dealership to see what kind of new truck I just bought, ended up getting an Element for himself, wife, and dogs. They love it!
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-09-2006, 11:34 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just got a call from the friendly folks at the "Campground by the Lake" (CBTL) at Lake Tahoe. They have reservation availabliity but could fill up soon. This place is closer to the Lake (across the street) but they are next to the main drag too and traffic is kinda busy there in the summer. The other camp Tahoe Valley Campground (TVC) is set back further into the woods alot more quiet and about a mile from the lake. Both places have complete campground amenities and are pretty places to camp. Either place is very good and I have tent camped at both of them.
CBTL is run by the City of South Lake Tahoe and is part of a greater recreational complex of adjorning libary, ice arena, first rate swimming pool, gym, volley ball court and campground. It's very nice and you can actually ice skate or watch a hockey game just a short walk from your campsite in the summer evenings. Kewl or what?
TVC is not as bustling as the CBTL. It's just a plain old good place to camp. You got my word on it.
Dates: Any one think September would be better than August? Both campgrounds say that's a good time to be there as kids are back in school and we would pretty much have the run of the place. Something to think about. Gimme some feed back on it please.
I hope you are checking these campgrounds out through there websites. There's some good info there for you see.
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-09-2006, 11:36 PM Phew.
I don't want to jinx myself but things seem to be falling into place rather well at the moment.
The more I think about it the better off I think we're going to be in either of the two private campgrounds. The State Parks although prettier, more remote, and in more pristine locations have their down sides too. They are all about rules and regulations (there are many) and won't tolerate straying away from them.
The Private campgrounds are less restrictive. So long as your not burning the place down you can pretty much expect to be left alone to have fun. There are also shuttle buses that will take you to the casinos from either of the private campgrounds too.
The two private campgrounds will also make sure we get adjoining individual campsites so we are not all flung out all over the place. No guarantees on that in the State Parks.
Once we've selected one of the private campgrounds and a date all you will need to do to get a reservation is contact the campground, let them know you are with The EOC/ROC Group and they'll isssue you your sites accordingly. Still a few days away from doing this but it's looking really good.
p.s. FYI: "Miss Ellie" is the name my hubby and I gave to our Element. My name is "Richelle" and my husband's name is "Gene". We are both making posts via Miss Ellie and thought you'de like to know that as both of us are responding. In the future we will sign off either as Richelle or Gene.

Portland...?
June........?
...is there a thread on this, or were you just going to surprise me? :D
edit: Oh, found it! I had seen the LadyRidge Bear thread, but not the previous one. Now I see what you guys are up to! (Only 4 hrs south of me, and I love the Oregon beaches.... they're the best!)
Cool Rider 01-16-2006, 02:01 AM Hi everyone
I am moving to Lincoln CA April 06, which is about 1hr to Taho area, and would love to link up with Ridgeliners in the area for local trips and share info.:)
nevadagarth 01-18-2006, 10:05 AM I will be there during the days. I live 25 minutes from Lake Tahoe and will come up for visits and cook outs. I can also help with some off road activities. I will scope them out come this summer when the snow is gone. My wife and I have camped and hiked around Lake Tahoe and can recommend some locations. There are also some great mom and pop restaurants that I can suggest. I think we should do breakfast at the "Slide On In" in Truckee, CA one morning. They are famous for thier omlettes and the size of the restaurant. It is called Slide On In for a reason.;)
We could do some trails in the Sierra with trees and some trails to the east with wide open spaces. Check out some of the pictures under the January R of the Month for some examples of one trail I have been on. There are tons of mining trails to the west of Lake Tahoe. I have been on a few of them also. The only down side is the trees are so thick you don't see much except near vertical cliff on one side and the middle of trees on the other.
Miss Ellie & Co. 01-28-2006, 05:40 PM The EOC/ROC West Coast "Lake Tahoe" Camping Trip is up and running.
I have also been asked ( challenged? ) to see if I can motivate you guys into coming up with some ideas for camp activities. You know, recreational fun stuff like games, contests and such. Need some help here with that. All ideas are welcomed.
I was even trying to secure some top notch entertainment for you guys too. But Zamfir: "Master of the Pan Flute" had a conflicting gig at the Setting Sun Retirement Villa in Winnemuca and cancelled out on me. Pfft* What a bummer. Especially for all our Zamfir fans who dig music that sounds like it's being blown through a coke bottle. Sigh* Maybe next year for Zamfir.
Still bound and determined, I've since come up with another zinger I am sure you all will like. How bout a EOC/ROC version of a famous So Cal car culture phenomenon that lasted for decades and met it's final demise in the mid 80s..
"Cruise Night on Van Nuys Boulevard"
Instead of Van Nuys Boulevard we'll cruise Lake Tahoe. Instead of night we'll do it during the day. All 65 miles of it! It would be a 3-4 hour run around the lake, with a lunch stop at one of the numerous parks or day use areas along the way. The drive around the lake is a well paved ribbon of a road and one of the most scenic anywhere. Just imagine 10-20-30-or more stock and tricked out Ridgelines and Elements, in a caravan, groovin and cruisin around beautiful Lake Tahoe. What a sight it would be!
Even the campground that we're planning to stay at has a few car washes in the area so peeps can wash off the road grime and get their Rides detailed for "Show and Go" cruising. Kewl or what?
So I've managed to come up with one idea. Now it's your turn. Be creative. We already know that you're smart.. after all you drive a Ridgeline!
Richelle
