Bayhorse Lake, Idaho

This was the last loop on our camping trip in Challis, Idaho. We'd discovered this jewel a few years earlier on another trip to the area. Reports at the local fishing shops were that Bayhorse was still frozen over the week before we got there. We decided to drive up and see if that was true. We may have been the first there to fish on the open water.

The dock was out in the water from the high level of the lake, so we came up with the idea of building a rock walk to get out there. It took us about a half hour to gather and scatter the rocks. It kept our feet dry. The dock on the south shore was still in about knee deep wet snow. We opted for the relatively dry dock.

It was pretty chilly when the wind came over the snow capped peaks, but fishing was pretty hot. We had our limits in no time. We love Bayhorse.

We had a great time here. The drive up is lovely. We saw a small herd of deer right after leaving the lake. There were about eight hanging out in the trees. They obliged us with several photos. I liked the pic of these three young bucks the best.

We found a small patch of snow and couldn't resist plowing through it. We knew we were unlikely to see anymore snow before winter. We also played with NAVI on the mountain.

The last photo of the Ridgeline is along the Salmon River where we had a chilly lunch. We only had the one day when we hiked into Jimmy Smith Lake that it wasn't unseasonably cold on this trip. Our next trip to Idaho would be the opposite extreme.

Fantastic! Looks like I'm not the only Utahn that heads North for winter outdoor adventures. It looks like everyone stayed dry but the dogs.
I have been trying to plan a trip to Redfish lake above sun valley. Maybe this summer. Never been there, so it is on the list.
Nice trout.
Here are a couple of pics of the wildlife I saw in Montana a couple weeks back.

Unfortunately still roaming around on the highway. The snow is melting away at the edges of the road and they are seeking the newly exposed grass. They are so skinny they look like they could use a good meal. Makes for some seriously dangerous night driving.:D

Redfish is nice but too developed and busy for my tastes. The good news is that it's just one of many nice lakes at the base of the Sawtooth Mountain range. In addition, you're near the Salmon River. The Stanley Basin is one of the prettiest places I've ever been.
