: Boiling sound when I turn the engine off?

I hear a sound, the best way to describe it is that it sounds like rapid boiling water, when I turn the engine off after driving. When it is quite in the cab I can hear this noise, is it water just settleing or is there boiling water cooling off? or is there air in the system under normal driving conditions?

Any one else hear this or have an explanation?.

I have always felt like my ridgeline runs hot just based on a feeling and smells under the hood. the Temp guage appears to running at normal with no real fluctuations to speak of.

Although I have not smelled antifreeze in the cab or outside, I have had to add about a quart of coolant at about 3000 miles, I have not checked it since at about 4400 now

I would get it checked out just in case. I had a vehicle before, can't remember which one it was, that would do something similar. I believe the cause was coolant draining back into the radiator. Kind of annoying, but I think it was pretty harmless. Still, a 2006 Honda should not be doing this in my opinion.

Although I have not heard this noise, I used to have a car that did this. It was usually when the A/C was running and I think the noise was from the condenser. Hope this helps. :)

Strange you should mention this. I heard something like that for the first time last night. I work the evening shift. Got home at a very quiet 2:00 AM. When I turned the ignition off I was gathing my stuff and heard what sounds like a few large bubbles moving somewhere under the hood. More of a gurgle than a boil, if that makes any sense. I am assuming it is the radiator refilling from the overflow tank as the engine rapidly cools and the coolant contracts. It was 25 degrees F last night. I've had my Ridge since last March and this is the first time I heard it.

I can go with the gurgle sound....last about 15-25 seconds.

As a mechanic on industrial engines, most of the time air is trapped in the system when filling the coolant system. The procedure was to run the engine with the radiator cap off until reaching thermostat opening. After circulating a few minutes the air is allowed to escape. Then the coolant is topped off. Something like this could happen on a new engine as well, or after coolant change.

Key information in problem here is the need to add coolant in the past. There is not too many causes for coolant to escape in such a quantity besides a leak or an overheating condition and the coolant escaping through the overflow. If you do not see the fluid under the vehicle in morning, it is not likely a leak. I would go with a flawed thermostat and the water overheating and flowing out of overflow while driving, but to confirm this it would probably also be showing on high side of in dash temp gauge (unless that too was defective).

No, none of those symptoms here, just a coolant level below thelow level line when the engine is at operating temp. I filled it with honda coolant to just below the high line while the engine was still hot.

Hey Lowrider, after you filled the the coolant bottle does it still make the boiling noise?

Actually, I haven't taken the time to notice, I keep forgetting to listen. I'll check at lunch time, I'll betaking lunch at the gym today.
