Full size sparemauikid 01-13-2006, 01:17 PM Will a full size spare fit where the donut spare is located? mayfielh 01-13-2006, 01:23 PM Yes you just have to move the tool kit. Why are we shouting?:D mayfielh 01-13-2006, 01:36 PM Don't you have to move the donut, too? :D Nope just deflate it the full size will slip right over the top. :p troutscout 01-13-2006, 01:38 PM Yep...I have a pic of my full size spare in my camera. I will post it when I get home. The jack kit fits neatly in a spot on the right side of the trunk, although I kinda wish I could put it somewhere else. I might build something that allows me to store it under the spare (since I won't be needing the jack unless I also need the spare. Maybe I will make something out of minicell foam. Hmmm... ridged 01-13-2006, 01:42 PM I have a pic of my full size spare in my camera. Hmmm... I started a thread about something similar. I recently purchased a full size spare also and do not like having the tool kit just resting out in the open on the little ledge. I don't want to see it and I use that ledge space quite a bit. I plan on strapping the jack to the inside of the full size spare and mount the tools to the underside of the trunk lid. I also plan on picking up some triangles and mounting them under the trunk lid also. I might get around to it this weekend. I am interested in your minicell foam. Is it something in a can that you can custom make something with? I sense a trip to Home Depot and/or Lowe's at lunch time.:D IFLY Ridge 01-23-2006, 11:59 AM Yes you just have to move the tool kit. Why are we shouting?:D Finally, a post that I can read without my glasses! This board thinks of everything! :) bikr 01-23-2006, 02:42 PM !@$#@#$@# GD!! My dealer lied to me and said that there was already a full sized spare in there!!! He owed me something for screwing something up a bit, and it was either "tint" yay.. or bed extender, i asked about full size spare instead and she said it was already a full size.. I'm pissed now!!! Is there anything I can do since it wasn't in writing? troutscout 01-25-2006, 03:52 PM Nevadagarth - I like your ideas too! Some long lengths of double sided velcro strips and something to pad the jack against the wheel would work well too...and you could do the same with the tools to the lid with the velcro. Easy on and off. The minicell foam I speak of comes in blocks. Last time I bought some it was in a 3" thickness I think. I got if from a local canoe/kayak store. I usually use it to outfit padding in whitewater kayaks. It is grey, closed cell foam. I use a serrated edge knife and 40 grit sandpaper to shape it like clay. :) I also use contact cement to glue pieces together. I was thinking of making a rounded shape that would fit inside the spare, with custom notches or spaces cut out for the jack and each tool, kinda like the existing black styrofoam that the tools come in from the factory. I will see if I have some left in the basement and take a couple of pics. Now, if only I can get that blasted heavy camera with the spare tire in it down the stairs. :D Cheers, TS Anyone else have any good ideas to share? nevadagarth 01-25-2006, 05:03 PM I was actually considering buying some of that expanding foam for filling gaps in insulation and using Saran Wrap to wrap the tools and the inside of the rim to create a custom tool holder. I would do it is stages so as to slowly build the foam up and insert the tools in layers if need be. It might be a "double decker" holder depending on how things work out. I am taking the next two days off to paint our Family Room so maybe I will step out into the garage for fresh air and start working on a custom tool holder. I think I will check into your idea also. tlaudio 03-27-2006, 10:12 AM BUMP! Any progress on this? I am also converting to a full size spare and do not like the right side location of the tools.... Anyone have any good ideas? TIA TL roakey 11-18-2009, 08:59 PM I am also converting to a full size spare and do not like the right side location of the tools.... Toss the styrofoam, wrap the tools in a heavy cloth and put them on top or under the spare. Roak Nimbus1 11-19-2009, 07:52 PM BUMP! I am also converting to a full size spare and do not like the right side location of the tools.... Anyone have any good ideas? TL Sears sells an under-the-seat plastic toolbox for under $10 that fits nicely on the shelf and holds a few tools. I also replaced the cheap OEM jack with a 12 ton bottle jack. TXEG 11-21-2009, 12:47 PM This is a great thread, as I recently bought an '09 RTL and am a little concerned about having a donut spare. I'm interested in buying a fullsize spare (wheel and tire) if it's not too expensive. I'm taking a 2300 mile trip the week after Christmas, and would like to convert before then. Any recommendations on the best place to buy an OEM wheel with or without factory rubber? Anybody want to sell one? :D Thanks, Eric SRQRIDGE 11-21-2009, 01:53 PM This is a great thread, as I recently bought an '09 RTL and am a little concerned about having a donut spare. Be warned that 09 wheels are hard to come by especially single ones and are more expensive than other years since they are high in demand right now. There is Craig's list too, but most likely it will be a sale for all 4, not single a rim Nimbus1 11-22-2009, 09:58 AM Any recommendations on the best place to buy an OEM wheel with or without factory rubber? How about some of that foam blocking that comes in pelican cases? Or is this the same thing? You can form the foam to the object by pulling out little squares. If I end up getting a FS spare, I'll probably replace my jack as well and have the safety stuff in the trunk. I'll get rid of the other senseless stuff I carry. | |
