paguard 01-13-2006, 09:51 PM Just got around to posting some pics. I installed the Retrax w/ a friend and it took about 3hrs. Would have taken less time but we encountered a problem. The rubber spacer on one the front mounting plates fell off, and before we realized it, we had tightened the cover down. It is only 4 screws, but they are in awkward positions that have to line up just right. Once I realized the spacer was laying in the bed, I had to back-out the 4 screws, re-glue the rubber spacer, reallign, and tighten again. Other than that little hitch, the install was pretty easy. You definately need 2 able bodies and 3 would be even better.
I really like the cover. Compared to the stretch and snap type I have always had, the Retrax is a dream. It does leak a bit, but I think I know where from, so I am going to add some type of silicon/caulk and see if that solves the leaks. It leaks in the corners where the cover housing meets the cab. When I lay in the bed with the cover extended, that is the only place I see light, so I am thinking that must be where the water is getting in.
The pix are the first I've posted, so this is more of a trial run rather than any ground breaking info. The dog's name is Camie, 1yr old female lab.
Truckin' 01-13-2006, 11:16 PM Oops, that little rubber collar problem set you back a bit. Those front corner bolts are the only challenging ones and if that goes smoothly, it's a piece of cake. Your pics look nice. Thanks for including the happy puppy one.
We put a silicon bead around ours too. Leaks are very minimal now.
That's a nice, Camie approved installation. I think the Retrax is the best looking cover but wish it could be quickly removed and stowed inside easily. It's a good thing there are many choices for different user's needs, but for slick looks and ease of use Retrax is great.
Andy-Montreal 01-14-2006, 09:46 AM I agree on how well-built the Retrax cover is. I installed mine this fall.
One thing you should do is to wax the cover with some automotive-grade wax. In addition, spray liberal amounts of silicone around the handle and felt gasket where the door seals up against. This will reduce chances of freezing up the door during cold weather. Another small problem is that the rubber handle cover is not sealed onto the door. During very humid conditions, water seeps under the bottom portion of the cover. Overnite during freezing temps, the water crystalizes and jams up the handle. The first chance I get, I will remove the handle assembly/handle cover and silicone the handle cover to the door to prevent seepage.
My driver side rubber thingie came off too.. I tried to reinsert it without lifting the cover out of the way, but didn't work so I used a (pokey thing) <--for lack of better term to hold it in place (didn't have glue) while I put the cover in place, then inserted the screw and removed the pokey thing from below.. Wow this post went south fast nevermind I'll shut up now haha..
It must have been a lot of work. Your friend looks pretty tired!::D

Your cover looks great. What was you delivered cost?
paguard 01-24-2006, 07:11 AM I can dig up the receipt, let me take a look and I will post the ship and total cost.
mr99rock 01-24-2006, 10:55 AM paguard,
Have you left the RL in the rain for any substantial period of time? If so, how does the retrax cover do in terms of keeping the bed dry?
mr99rock
PS Cute lab.
I can only speak for me , but thus far I haven't had any issues with water getting in at all in the rain (and we have some heavy rain). My total shipped was 844 --Josh
HoosierRL 01-27-2006, 06:16 PM I installed mine tonight. Piece of cake. It will be fairly easy to get off, if required. I was a little surprised at how much of the bed that it took up.
I'm pleased with it so far.
