Was at Target today and found this (http://www.caselogic.com/mp3_cell_phone_wedge/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=57111) little 'wedge' kit by them, for 10$ I beleive. Since Im tired of resting my ipod in the cupholder, and I think the igrip/thing (rubber cup insert) is bogus for 10$ I decided to give this a shot and it works great.
Only trick is depending how you 'wedge' it, means you have to hold it sometimes if you're sliding the center console around. But when I unconsciously was using the c.console without holding the 'wedge' it still stayed put without issue. It's not really a 'wedge' either, rather a plate, with some fabric 'slack loops' that come off the surface and are sewed down at both ends, x4 total, that basically press against the side of your console for grip - and push the 'plate' against the seat. It's a good idea.
I have an iskin evo3 on my 5th gen video ipod and the little rubber tack mat they have on the top of this thing kept my ipod in place. I use the little cubby under it for storing my cellphone charger and/or the fm modulator (there is an empty box under where the ipod sits accessible via a velcro door).
There is also a slot on either end, I have a nokia 6101 flip and I stick the 'flip' in one end and let it hang over the edge. This way I can dig out the charger and plug in the whole affair with one hand if I need to also.
It scores neat geek points for me because it can either hold the ipod flat - or cock it a bit(side to side). I put the 'wedge' facing inward of the console on the drivers side - and have the ipod resting so that it is tilting inward. This way with my R arm in its natural driving position - the ipod is at fingertip access.
So far this is the best 10$ I've spent :)
