View Full Version : I love my new Ridgeline, BUT....
I was lied to by a sneaker dealer.
I went to the dealer that I have gotten my last 2 Honda's from (Key Largo Honda). It is a bit of a drive for me, but they have always been the cheapest and most honest people to deal with.
So... They gave me a price of $27,000, out the door after taxes and everything on my truck. Which I was more than happy with. BUT my wife wanted to go to another dealer, 2 hours away, just to make sure we were getting a good deal..
So.. We go to this other dealer(Coral Springs Honda) and right off I tell the guy he is either going to beat the price of 27 flat or I will just take my business back to the people I am comforitable with..
So... After going back and forth a couple times, he comes back to me with a price of $26,700 out the door. After calling the other dealer to give them a chance to match, which they couldnt, I went ahead and agreed to purchase it from this other dealer.
OK... So everything goes smoothly. No problems. I put $7,500 down cash and the guy went over the contract with us, showing us how the new balance was $19,200. Looks good to me, so when he called us back to his office a little bit later, I made the mistake of not looking over the contract again before I signed..
Well..After I got home I see that he added some BS "etch theft" and some BS "registration fee" which came up to about $500.
OK.. So $500 is NO big deal.. I know this. But I am pissed off that they had to be sneaky about it like they were. I guess I should be mad at myself for not looking it over and over again before signing for it. BUt still, that is no excuse for them to conduct their business like that. For a measely $500.
In any case.. The truck is great!!!! By no means am I unhappy with the truck itself. But still.. I hate slimey, dishonest people.
Anyhow.. I think the 1st thing I will add to my truck is the Basic Koncepts bed cover and the factory running boards(if they arent too difficult to install myself). Anyone else have that bed cover??? How is it??? its the cheapest one out there, but it appears to be the best one.
thanks!

I know how ya feel dude....they always hit me with Documentation Fee of 75.00 or more in the past..... for some reason this time it was not on the paper work. I was even looking for it...mmmm Seems enough people bitch they finally took it off at Alberta Honda.... only thing I had to pay was delivery and dealer prep crap.
Congrats on the new truck....truly a remarkable, versatile machine.

If you have not taken delivery of the vehicle, you do not have a 'deal' yet.
Don't take delivery until they remove the extra charges. Stop your check or disput a credit charge to make sure you get your 'down' money back.
Accepting slimey stuff just supports them doing it.
When they cry about the stuff they've put on the vehicle, tell them they will have to eat it because of their slimey ways.
If they won't go through with the deal, demand you down payment back and walk. Start talking about the local TV stations, the state attorney general's office, BBB, etc if they push to complete the deal.

A great way to avoid this is to get a pre-approved loan from your bank or credit union. You have a check to write and the amount you fill in is what they get. If you have a "drive it off the lot" price then that is all you make the check out for. ;)
Get this... When I got my extended warranty, i paid for 7 years/100k but the finance guy gave me 5 year/75k and tried to slip by me. I reported him when Honda called for survey.
yeah.. to follow up on this story..
my financing didnt go through. they let me leave with it because i put $7500 down, but after a week called to tell me that they had to change banks for my loan and that i had to pay them $1000 more down AND a $700 FEE to top it off.. Not to mention they were now going to raise the interest rate from 14 to 18%.. lol
this prick tried talking to my wife.. he avoided me altogether.. and ALMOST had her ready to pay him.. but i got home JUST in time.
ALL he had to do was try and resolve it the right way (like asking me to get a cosigner or something), but NO, he wanted to stick it to me some more.
He threatened to take it back. So I told him "you wont have to, I will BRING it to you gladly"... well.. they tried everything at that point.. waiving this $700 fee that was supposedly not their fee and out of their hands, and some other BS. but at this point I would have rather died than to let these pricks keep a PENNY of my money.
anyhow.. the next day i couldnt make it at the time i arranged to take it back (my house got robbed).. so the guy wanted to charge me a $1000 repo fee! lol and ended up calling me a liar when i told him i didnt come the day before due to my house being robbed.. SO... I went off on him.. SO much in fact that when I walked in the door of the dealership, he ran off to the back and didnt come out until I left.. He was afraid and embarassed to even face me. F'ing prick..
but i got my full refund.. so all in all i was happy.
went the next day and got the same truck at the BEST dealership in the world (Largo Honda).. the same place i have got my last 2 cars from as well.. and the place i wanted to get this one from as well, cept for my wife busting my balls to get it at this other ****hole..
paid $26,750 OUT the door..After ALL taxes and fees. dont think i coulda got a better deal ANYWHERE.. got a 12% interest rate and only had to put down $5,000 instead of 7 or 8. No hassles. No lies.. And no BS from them either!
so.. all is well the ends well..
only change i made is i went from black to silver..
which..
BTW - is there ANYWAY I can replace the door handles? I hate that my truck is silver but the handles are black.. It looks cheap!

just one question. why is your interest rate so high. 12% is very high over the normal 4.25 - 6.25 for going through honda. Unless your dealer did not go through honda. On my last car i got 4.65% with is really good for me.

From the dealer's point of view $500 x 3000 cars per year = $1.5M!! So if they pull this on every car, the dealer buys a very nice new house.
I would threaten to fill out a negative survey on the salesperson; this will get their attention. I did this, and got them to cancel an overpriced warranty and gap insurance. It's a hassle, but I wouldn't let $500 go.
Dealer are pathological about this, they just have to try and stick an extra $500-$1000 on each car, doing the math in their head like I did above. Sometimes its etch, sometimes it's chemicals like undercoating or polyglycoat, they also use overpriced warranties, overpriced alarm systems, insurance, doc fees, whatever. And of course, they mark up the interest rate on the loans, so they get a little $50-$100 check each month from the bank. Same goes for leases, they love getting a little $100 check each month when they mark up the lease rate. Which they all do.
My comment to the dealership was this: How do you expect to have a relationship with me, ie, fill out a post-sale survey, if you are a bunch of lying cheatin' four-flushin' weasels? You just have to watch them carefully.

On this note, I tried to pay cash for an add-on and I killed the finance guys computer. They sell you this stuff (gap, lojack, paint sealer) because they know you are going to finance it. So, over time you are paying more then the price they are quoting you. I agreed to take an add on for cash and the finance guy had to re-write the price of the car to get the payments to stay exactly the same and still inclide the add on.
As it turned out my payments are now .02 cents cheaper because the numbers wouldn't line up (I'm sill financing the add-on since it is the only way it would work on the computer ...but my car is cheaper to offset the interest)
That's proof that they're ripping you off.

Glad you got yourself a better deal. :)
how come 12% interest? Honda Finance has 5.9% rate on RL here,

I'm guessing bad credit, bankruptcy, prior repo, etc.

Im glad that may parents helped me out on my credit. After taking a class about it in school they let me put 2 house bills in my name. Please having a total fo 3 credit card (only 2 now visa and amex blue) and getting a good job do I have a credit score of 743 not bad for someone that is 22.
If any young people are reading this, talk to your parents and have them help you on your credit score by puting some bills in your name. That helps your credit score alot more if you have them for a long time then just getting a loan in your name
Ok back on topic
good reading here. I know a dealer in louisville,ky tried to add paint protection and care detailing when I was going to get my accord for 1500. I went crazy as was asking what that was. Dealer said it was something honda dose. So I asked to show me on there website and on paperword of that charge. After 15min of waiting I left and went to our local deal (Hardin County Honda in Elizabethtown, Ky) We have bought 3 cars for them and Im going to them for my Ridgeline soon.

Good job, happy for ya...Don't let the Finance dept. take you for a ride. They will try and add on stuff you don't need. Asking questions is a good thing especially when making a investment in a vehicle.

QUESTION? I went to the dealership and they gave me a good price on the Ridgeline I want. I suppose to pick it up the end of the month. They asked me if I had a trade I told them NO... I have $4000 to put down. Once I get there and sit down with the sales person and do the paper work, I will try to get them to lower the price even more. If I accomplish that, then do I let them know I have a trade?

I never tell the dealer that I don't have a trade. I'm honest with them and expect the same from them. I do negotiate the price of the vehicle without the trade. If I don't like that price, we either renegoiate or I walk away. If we agree on a price, then we talk trade in. Again, if we don't agree, I can either renegotiate, walk away or decide to sell my own vehicle. I then know both the true cash price for the new vehicle and the actual price they are giving me for the trade. Being up front and firm works, especially if you are dealing with the internet/fleet manager. When I bought the RL last July, we had agreed on the price of the RL at about dealer invoice plus accessories at or below cost. They then offered me $500 less on my trade than I wanted. I said no deal. They asked what it would take to keep the transaction at their dealership and I told them another $500 for my trade. Instead they lowered the sale price of the RL another $500 to arrive at the same price. The whole process was fast, friendly and productive.

I am with Web here, honest is always best.......
I had printed the KB on my trade and on the Honda, worked a deal from there.
I pay $700 month on our Honda, $200 more then the 02 GT Vert I traded.
$1000 down with 10.8% rate.
Out the door with a $35K note on the BEST truck on the market IMOP.
FYI
We own our house with 3 car payments, called priority's.

One reason his apr could be so high is because of his credit. My RTS I brought for 27 out the door but because my credit isn't the best my apr is 10%. Well I am 24 years old and the only 24 year old that has a 06 honda ridgeline as well as a 02 acura tl. Most people hate on me because I have both but I know how to manage my money. My credit wouldn't be so bad if I would not have had credit fraud. But I am fighting that as we speak. So with out boring you all any more I am gonna leave on that note. By the way love the forum. New to it.

i have bad credit.. very bad.. so i was actually happier than a pig in **** to get 12%!! I actually expected to have to put $10,000 down when i started looking. I have over $200,000 in outstanding debt (between student loans and hospital bills), so i am surprised they even let me finance $1. my sister co signed for me though, otherwise it wouldnt have happened at all.. but they still factor my credit in on the %rate. and no, my sister wouldnt simply just put it in her name, although i tried to get her too!!! so that wasnt an option..
I am hoping to have it paid off within the year anyway.. so no big deal with whatever the interest rate is. BUT, knowing that things dont always go as they are planned, i can live with the 12% if need be.
i am just happy to have gotten the deal i wanted.. no bull**** and no slimey finance guy trying to stick it to me when he thinks i am not looking.
