I said I'd post some Weimaraner puppy photos and thought this would be another thread many of us would love to poke through. Here are a few snaps of my Sparkle girl. She'll be four in June. The puppy stage goes away fast when you have a larger breed.

Cute pictures Truckin' and Razi. I know what you mean about growing up fast. We just had Mokey to the vet for his fourth shot and in the past month he gained 9 1/2 lb. In the two months we have had him, he has more than doubled his weight.

Beautiful Macaw , Isakos , I worked for an aviary for five years, it had 65 parrots, scarlet macaws, hyacinth macaws, assorted amazons and cocatoos . After helping rear baby parrots for those years I became a bird lover , I have a blue crowned conure, a cocatiel and a pigeon at the moment . All animals are amazing and have always been a part of my life, but birds are different joy .

No haircut Truckin'. He's losing his baby fuzz and his pernanent hair is laying down. I don't know how long it's going to be but he is beginning to feather on his legs and tail. When Grover was this age his tail hair was just flat but he ended up with a gorgeous feathered tail and legs. We're hoping that Mokey does the same but if he doesn't that's OK. We have pretty well determined that the part that is "collie" is border collie and not the regular kind.

Dragonslayer,
We lost our Amazon two weeks ago after 25 years of pure joy. The house was so quiet, the dogs sulked. I got lucky, a guy in town sold me an 11 month old yellow crested Amazon. Hes a great young bird, starting to talk. But one of his feet has a odd shapped rear foot toe. It does not seem to hamper him though. By the looks of the family I bought him from they needed the money. Also the bird was kept in a cage 5 sizes too small for him. So both the bird & I got lucky.:)

Dragonslayer
04-01-2006, 10:51 AM
Your Amazon is lucky to find a good home, Is it a yellow head, double yellow , there are so many types of Amazon parrots . I really truely fell in love with parrots and they are so intelligent ! When I worked for an aviary , my boss would get lazy and forget to close cages , he lost his very first Amazon that way, a week later I saw her " Peanut " in a tree near the aviary . I stuck a peanut on the end of a branch and coaxed her to get on the end of it ,when she got on the branch , I brought it close to me, dropped the branch and grabbed her , it was so amazing, and my boss was so happy . I personally never lost any of his birds , I did not want to be responsible for that . A cage bred bird never learns about flying down , so when they get loose they just keep flying upwards to the tree tops till they starve or get exhausted , I was lucky that Peanut got hungry and I was there at the right time .
I'm enclosing pics of me with 2 baby Hyacinth macaws , I had raised them from the day they hatched from their eggs . Expensive birds , at the time
( 1998 ) they were going for $7,000 each for the baby's  .

This is Rella... our daughter's pup. She's a mutt that resembles an Ewok. This is probably her full size. She hasn't really grown in the month she's been here. She has an underbite & is quite the chewer right now!! I'm puppy sitting this weekend!!

Her & Bitzer love to play....she's a little on the mean side...she'll attack when he's not looking. She also likes to go for the "tender" spots on him! When that happens, he's good about not nipping back, he yipes & gets away for a little while.

I wonder now if my dogs are "real" dogs, since they can't "haul and tow" that much and the pug somtimes gets terrible gas for a small dog. So, are the only "real" dogs huskies, st bernards, and great danes (actually this one might be a small pony) ?

Mokey is 8 months old now and is a very active pup. He is by far the fastest dog I have ever owned and I think he would make a great agility dog if I wanted to devote the time and energy for his training. I took him out in the back yard yesterday and set up a jump. He had the idea in just a few minutes and it is great fun to watch him effortlessly leap over it. He can't get enough of playing fetch and tug of war. He has developed a beautiful coat that is long, wavey, and glossy, with feathered legs and tail. His black coat has overtones of brown.

He's a sweet dog, Hez. As active as he is, he still has to have lots of lap time with both my wife and I every day.
I have seen Flyball and it's great fun to watch and Border Collies are the predominant breed. With all the other things we are committed to, I just don't think I could devote the time it takes for all the training and do it justice. But Mokey and I can have a lot of fun in the back yard learining from each other. Me learning to train and him being engaged in it. From my limited experience with our other dogs, the most important thing is to find a way to communicate to the dog what it is you want them to do. Once they understand that, the rest is easy.

I've said it before & I'll say it again, the people who think that humans domesticated dogs have the story backwards.

As a side note, I remind everyone that St. Christopher, patron of travelers, is often described as having the head of a dog. Dog-ophiles know this probably makes sense.

Here's the set I brought back from Turkey with me. Kale (pronounced Callae) and Dost. Kale has the white feet and Dost the black. I shipped Dost off to work as a sheep guardian in Texas at 9 weeks and so have included a couple of Kale alone and with Kori - my other Kangal. Kale is 3 months old now and close to 40 Lbs. He'll dwarf Kori as an adult.

He is a real sweet heart but at 3 months all puppies are ;) I've been calling him the mini-monster just so I don't forget his potential. You really need to be careful not to let things slip with these guys as they do grow large and if the pecking order isn't established when they're young it's a constant battle. Kori helps with that though - she's not scared to lay down the law and make him squeal when he crosses the line.

I don't know how I'm going to be able to transport them both in the Ridge once he's outgrown the crate. I might have to start making them take turns for the rides :)

Truckin'

ALL dogs need to learn they are on the bottom of the pecking order, but it's absolutely, critically essential for the large breeds.

We've had people come to dog classes with a small breed like a yorkie or a miniature schnauzer that was so out of control that their owners were afraid of them. That's simply unacceptable and ridiculous. Some people have no sense about having dogs.

[QUOTE=Webwader;121059]Mokey is 8 months old now and is a very active pup. His black coat has overtones of brown.[/QUO
Looks like a Border Collie! If he gets OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) you'll know for sure!!

Yep, she is a Labradoodle. Her mom was a registered black lab and her dad was a registered white standard poodle. Here in Arizona we actually clip her curls in the summer so right now she is very close cropped.

This is my baby Molly the Maltese. She's about 4 months old now but still less than 3 pounds. She's absolutely adorable but is a ball of energy 24/7 and takes 100% of our patience most of the time - she LOVES electric cords so she has to stay in her puppy proof room most of the time until she starts behaving less puppy-like. I can't be mad at her though! Look at that face! :p

She is a doll. May I make a training suggestion? Use this as a learning opportunity.

Take a cord that isn't plugged in and casually set it up to entice her. She won't know it until she 'plays' with it that you've dipped it in or seasoned it with Tabasco sauce. Reinforce the nasty taste with a sharp "NO" at the same time that she tastes the hot sauce. That might be all she needs to get over her tendency to chew cords.

Ah, melt my heart on two counts: the roadside rescue and naming her Sparkle.

How long have you had her?

We've had her for about three and a half years now. We suspect she had been abused and even abandoned because she cowered from my Mom for the longest time. She is just NOW starting to get used to her. When she feeds Sparkle, sometimes I have to yell at her to eat before she will.

Sparkle likes men more then women, and we suspect she was abused by a one. She is a bit on the slow side, though. My Mom and I think she was left outside a lot, and learned to survive by eating bird seed. She still does despite being well fed, and she got our OTHER dog (the puppy) to eat seed too.

It's not unusual for dogs to eat bird seed. It's just grain, after all, a main ingredient of most dog foods. Both my girls eat bird seed daily and they also eat grass hay that we feed the mules.

True, but our previous Rat terrier wouldn't eat it but would eat practically ALL human food given to him. Even garlic, lemon, and lettuce.

OK, Carl. I haven't taken many photos, I've been too busy playing with him. :)

The breeder gave us one of Gordy's stuffed toys that supposedly had his mom and sibling's scent on it. This was to help with Gordy's transition into our home. Well, he wanted nothing to do with it. Instead, he found a very old pair of my sneakers, that I now use as slip-ons for quick trips outdoors, and adopted them:

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd15/jsant01/ROC%20Photos/IMG_1829.jpg

It's kind of cute, he'll take one of them to his bed and sleeps with it. If he can put up with my old sneaker smell then it's a good guess he likes me.

Gordy is a lot of fun for me. He is a quick learner, too. We got him on Saturday and by Monday afternoon he was already scratching at the back door to go out and take care of his business. He also lets me sleep through the night. So, I think he's over the seperation anxiety he experienced his first night.

I scolded my wife yesterday for having him up on the sofa. I told her don't do anything with him now that you won't want him to do when he's 65 pounds!

Pam, here's something I need help with. Gordy is an excellent walker. He'll stay beside me and walk with me and not get very side tracked and he really seems to enjoy it. Until I put a leash on him. He absolutely rejects it. Do you have any suggestions? The Vet says to drag him around until it sinks in, but I can't do that. She also mentioned putting some wet dog food on the leash and hope that he will follow it. I don't care for that idea, either.

I like a treat motivated response the best. A treat motivated dog is so much easier to train!

Here's a tactic to try. This will save you're back until he gets a bit taller. Get a wooden dowel or a mini blind wand and dip one end in peanut butter or cream cheese.

It will be good to introduce Gordy to the wonderful taste of these treats in advance. Put some on a spoon and have him sit, down or come and use this as his yummy treat as a reward. Once he knows the taste and smell, he'll be more than happy to step forward out as you dangle the dowel right out of reach of his nose in front of him as you walk. As he's forgetting about resisting the leash REWARD REWARD. He can lick the stick or you can have some other yummy treats in hand to keep him motivated.

As he grows or gets the idea, you won't need the dowel anymore. You will need a steady flow of treats to reward him frequently as he gives you the behavior you want. Use liberal treats as you build foundations and he gets the concepts, then drop to random, intermittent treats.

Another hint is to use soft treats, not dog biscuits. Purina Moist and Meaty dog food in cellophane pouches is a cheap treat that we use. We never feed this to them as a meal, it is only for training. Make sure you get the kibble shape and not the spaghetti shape. In addition we will up the ante to cheese, chicken or ham if the dog is losing interest or doing a terrific job.

Have small training sessions before each meal when your pup is hungry or skip the meal until after training. Be sure to adjust for the calories of the treats so you don't end up with an overweight poochie.

I expect Gordy will be leaping and forging after a couple of lessons of enticing him. Correcting those behaviors requires different tactics.

Pizza Man
12-09-2008, 11:51 AM
Excellent Pam, I'll give the dowel trick a shot. It's the most reasonable approach yet. I'll let you know how well it works for me.

Gordy is already into the reward method of training and I'm sure to make him sit still before he gets it. I've read somewhere you shouldn't reward excited behavior. This morning he sat on his own waiting for me to get his treat out of the pantry.

I just love this dog to death. He's starting to show some playful personality now.

When we first got our Lab as a pup it was having seizures which none of the vets could explain and luckily went away within a couple weeks. The downside was that my wife felt very protective during the pups early months and had gotten in the habit of having sit with her on the recliner. The result is an 80 lb Yellow Lab that still thinks it can fit with the wife on her chair. I really like Pam's dowel trick and really dont think too much of a vet that suggested dragging the pup til it learned.

In all honesty FlaGuy, I think (hope) she was kidding.

She did explain one of the other habits my Gordy has. When I gave him his first bowl of food, the same stuff the breeder uses, he walked over to the bowl and put his paw into it and scooped out a bunch of it onto the floor. He then started eating it off the floor. The Vet explained that comes from being part of a litter sharing food out of the same bowl. It's his way of taking his portion away from his brothers.

Truckin'
12-09-2008, 04:11 PM
Another thing to emphasize that will have impact on Gordy wanting to be with you is to do "COME" games everyday. These are to be happy events with treats when the little tike gets to you. The end result will be to convince your pup that you are more interesting than anything else in the universe. No cat running by, smell on a tree or other distraction will trump "COME" when you say that.

We always tell our students that this is the command that can literally save your dog's life. It bonds your pup to you. He will start to see that whatever you are doing is best and he'll want to be right there.

In the house you can play "come" from different rooms or down a hallway. You and your wife and anyone else you can recruit to be part of the game can sit across from each other in a room and call the dog to yourself then to other people in the room. Use very happy voices and have a treat to reward the bounding pup when he comes.

When you are outside and your doggie decides you aren't quite as interesting as whatever he is doing, don't forget to engage his chase instinct. Start merrily trotting away from him singing and waving that he should come! Once Gordy starts to chase you, you've won.

You can also trigger that chase instinct by throwing a tug toy or ball in the direction you want the dog to go. Then you work on getting him to come right to you. The important thing is that you've broke the lock of his attention that was causing him to ignore you.

Saying "COME" in a deeper or harsh voice is counter productive. Do not do that. This is always a happy game. When the dog finally comes, it is always a celebration, even if he's taken his sweet time and been a little stinker. COME is always good!

Oh, one more hint to get him over his leash aversion. This comes from a dear friend who is an expert bird dog trainer who raises and competes with National Champion German Wirehairs. Tie about a foot long piece of rope to your pup's collar and just let him get used to walking around with that small rope dragging along. Periodically tug on it and lead him around a bit. I would take it off whenever he's kenneled or left alone, but while you're home with him this gives both of you a chance to normalize that he will be having pressure on his neck and be required to go in the direction you choose.

Good luck and have a blast.

Here's a little update for you. I found out the little bugger is not afraid of water. He walked into my bathroom while I was in the shower this morning. Before I realized what he was doing he slid open the shower door and walked in. I pushed him out and finished my shower. I got out of the shower and found my towel and bath mat were gone. I looked into my bedroom and there was my towel, the bath mat on top of it and Gordy sitting on top of the pile. :D Gordy, what the hell are you doing, I asked. There he is, sitting there and his tail wagging a mile a minute.

Personal hygiene is important to a dog too, Joe. :D Mokie is three years old and i still can't leave my wash cloth hanging on the shower door towel rack. He takes it off and puts it on the floor. He doesn't take it or chew it, just takes it down.

Very cute pup, MikeT.

You have some great training tips, Pam. Do you have any good ones Mokie can use? After all this time he doesn't think I can remember to get the paper in the morning, or that my wife will remember to make breakfast. Neither one of seem to be able to locate the garbage can is without his help and I can't even make it to meals without a reminder from him. Any there anythng that he can do to train us better and take this burden of responsibility off him? :D

Your shower story is pretty funny too, Joe! :D That's just too cute, ya can't get mad even when you're dripping wet.

Most dogs love peanut butter, so I'm not surprised.

Webby, it sounds like Mokie has you trained just fine. :D

What a bunch of cuties!! I would like to add my newest addition to the line up. His name is Macho and this is a very BIG dog traped in a very small dogs body!! He climbs on the cats backs when they are laying down or pulls their tail or runs along behind them as they walk through the house and nips the back of their legs. If they turn around on him he turns and runs as fast as 4 little 3 inch legs will carry him.:D His personality "grows" each day even if he only weighs 1.6 lbs!

Here is a picture of my son right after he learned how to walk and our 2 year old dog. The dog is half Chiauaua, half Miniture Pincher. I know he's not the cutest thing in the world, but he has a stubborn personality that grows on you real fast. We have bought two other dogs since him, but both of those dogs were given to friends and family. Tippy is the only one we have kept around. My son is half Mexican, half Caucasian. :p I guess in the end, we are all just mutts!

What can I say she is a keeper! :)

This one was left with 2 siblings in a box where i use to work. The only one left at the end of the day and I couldn't send her to the pound (though sometimes I wish I had). She has been a very big struggle with some major issues but I think (knock on wood) we are finally to the smooth sailing days. :)

The third pic is both our kids.

My son is his Valley Bulldog, he named her 'Diesel'. We told him Diesel wasn't a girl's name, he replied 'How about Diesel Ann?'

At the hotel the night I picked her up

Here's an interesting fact for you dog lovers. A recent survey showed that for the 18th year in a row the Lab was the most popular breed in the country and that the Golden Retriever was the 4th most. Now get this. Neither breed has won Westminster. You can look this up. I actually spoke to the president of the Westminster Kennel Club and confronted him with this and he had no explanation. I've owned labs and find it hard to believe out of all those dogs no one has bred the perfect Lab. Dog shows are extremely slanted. Some years back the winner was a Dobbie. Guess what that judge bred. You guessed it, dobbies.
