You all are in for a treat. I spent my formidable years in South Dakota. I call the Mitchell and Sioux Falls area my home.

I have spent many a trips in the Sylvan Lake area. I haven't seen Crazy Horse in years but I occassionally check the website to see the progress. If you haven't seen it in person, you will be blown away by the sheer size of this sculpture. The recently renovated (7-10 years ago?) Mt. Rushmore visitors center is very nice from what my parents have told me. They revisited it a couple of years back and really enjoyed themselves. They used to or still do a laser light show with sound that is supposed to be remarkable.

I also reccommend the Badlands, Wall Drug, and the Corn Palace. The last two will not give you the awe and wonder that Crazy Horse, Rushmore, and the Badlands will, but you just can't travel along I-90 and not visit those two tourist "hot spots".;)

Enjoy yourselves and I am happy to hear you will be discovering the hidden beauty of South Dakota (once you look past the endless farm fields  )

One last thing, bring comfortable walking shoes to the Mall of America. :D

When driving through South Dakota on I-90 be sure to stop at a very cool place called "1880 Town". It's near the middle of the state by the town of Murdo. It's a very interesting town and movie set that also has a museum full of western artifacts and western movie items. It's one of the most memorable places I've actually ever seen. I truly felt like I was walking down a town street in 1880. Very cool!!

As mentioned on the Winnipeg thread, SHMBO and I will be out there at Custer for the VROC (Vulcan Owner/Riders Club) rally June 22 to 25.

Am I right in assuming you will be out two weeks earlier?

I will be riding and SHMBO will be driving the Ridgeline as logistical support for our riding group.

We plan on going to the Crazyhorse site, the Jeweled Caves, and all the usual Tourist Traps. If you're out there at that time look out for the blue Ridgeline surrounded by a lot of real big motorcycles.

We're staying at the Legion Lake resort in CSP June 4-9. Perhaps we'll bump into you. It's a battle right now whether we drive the Pilot or Ridgeline. The kids are voting Pilot because it has the DVD player...I don't remember needing those when I was growing up! I'm voting we buy them some more books and take the RL. I can fit more bikes on/in it and that's the purpose of the trip for me...miles of sweet SD singletrack and quiet country roads!

Peace

cool pictures i live about 2 hours from the hills, I get up there about once a month. some places worth seeing would be, Deadwood of course, Keystone and Hill City, (you can ride the 1880 train there) If you're a mountain biker, the mickelson trail is incredible, its about 100 miles of what used to be the Burlington Northern Hi-Line that ran from Edgemont to Deadwood. Devils Tower should be seen in person to be appreciated, I lived in Gillette for about a year and made several drives out there its Amazing! I dirtbike the trail roads around Custer. in the summer so I believe that some of the best places you can't get to with a car :D

That's about when we camped throughout that area when our kids were young. And Devil's Tower, and many other places. The kids camped with us in over 30 states and 3 Canadian provinces and saw much of the great countries of the USA and Canada during those vacations. I'd do it all again - the kids' out-of-school education was priceless. (As was the enjoyment for my wife and me!)

No camping this time, though. Not enough time. :(

My wife still hikes on the trails in the mountains, parks and monuments, but my bad back and bum knee won't allow me to do that any more.

Your recommendations regarding Deadwood, Keystone and Hill City are appreciated, and I will see if time allows us to visit them.
