Okay Cal ROC,

We have 20 trucks who want to do this meet but I have no way of knowing where you are located. So I want to see who really wants to do this Cal ROC Meet in Santa Cruz, CA on September 30, 2006. Those ROC members from out of state wanting to attend, are also more than welcome to join us! As always, the EOC is also welcome to come hang out with us. I need you to vote only if you plan to attend by voting where you live...NorCal, CenCal, or SoCal.

Hey Toobuku, I'm totally in and thanks for the PM. Monterey works too, I thought I saw that mentioned but I don't want to confuse the thread. Santa Cruz works just fine for me. I just over the hill and has lots to offer.

Good choice on location. Are you going to try and get block setting for rooms up there or are we on our own? Either way works for me.

Toobuku, I will pass on voting since I would not be coming from any CA direction. This is for CA ROC'ers. If I go, I will decide after you choose the location. The only plus going for me so far is I have a friend (and place to stay) in Santa Cruz. But again, its limited. So I will refrain from voting. Thanks!

I am less than 100 miles from the Oregon border, I have been in contact with a member with an roc member in Redding , which is 99 miles east of me and will see if he is interested too . Considering that 17 of 19 that attended the So Cal Meet (other 2 from AZ) I would imagine this should be a huge turnout! If you've never attended a meet, this is the one to be at! I really hope you guys get together in mass! Even though September is a bit aways, it gives everyone time to clear their calendar. I highly recommend meeting the wonderful ROCheads from So Cal! :D

And who knows......maybe there will be some from other states....

Being the geography buff I am, I agree with you! If I was still taking family vacations as a kid, it takes about 16 to 18 hours to get from L.A. to the top of the state! So anything between let's say Ventura Co and Alameda Co should be Central California! But I don't do the geographical breakdown of the state. ;)

Sure Sounds like fun, but a bit far off on the calendar for us to make a "serious commitment". We'll check it out & get back. Would be a nice way to continue celebration of our 35th anniversary (Sept 4th).
I'm really thinking we'll make it . . . have been aching for an excuse to make that trip up the coast.

P.S. It's all "Northern Calif. for us border squatters down south. If it's past Ventura, it's North! ;) :p

Toobuku, I am a geography buff too , and geology also . I grew up in Pittsburg California and my family still lives in the bay area . Anything south of me I consider southern california:D , when I lived in Berkeley and Oakland every thing north was northern california and every south of Santa Cruz was Southern Cal . I passed on nav because I love ot figure out on a map where I am going and how long it will take me to get there . It took me 10 1/2 hours . including breaks and gassing up to get from Bakersfield to McKinleyville via I-5 to Redding and 299 from Redding to here . Every body has told me that it was quick . I do not know if that is true because it was the first time on both highways for me . I never used to like driving but I love driving my RL:) .

Hi Dragonslayer, From the looks of the current poll it would seem like a lot of our members feel the same way! (Very few Central Cal folks!)

Yo UglyTruckling, I’m so glad you both are reconsidering this awesome chance for a meet & greets! This one should be huge!

Hey CAL ROC members!

I am just adding another log of wood to the fire! At the close of this poll, we had a total of 20 members in all who were up for the 1ST CAL ROC MEET in Santa Cruz, CA on September 30, 2006. Maybe it was to far in advance for some to vote on at that time however, If you are a plannner like I am, you look forward to being there! I was wondering of the members who voted before, Is the fire to be there still burning? Have any of the other members who I know of and don't know care to join us?

I along with Kahnartist (Linda) have compiled some helpful information on lodging, lodging with pets allowed, and other activities and things to do. If you have not visited the thread in a while, please do so and re-energize your juicies in joining the ROC members who are commited to meeting the ROC members they have yet to meet! Besides the one's who already committed to going, who else is joining us? Please sound off! :)

Okay California ROC Heads,

We are 2 months away from The CAL ROC I Meet and the challenge is already on! The SoCal Meet record of 19 may fall to The Ridge Run , however if everyone comes to the CAL ROC I Meet, who have already committed to coming (26), we will beat and set a new record and we can knock it out the park if the ROC heads I have yet to hear from make it to the meet. Let's start getting booked into one of the hotels listed in the thread and try and book it out to ROC heads only! I hope those who are undecided, commit to attending and those who have already committed don't change their minds! This is going to be a blast! Let's do this! :D

OK Cali, If you have not heard the news, The First Annual Ridge Run was a big success! The Mid-West/Right Coast ROC heads surpassed our 4 month old record of (19) by (1) truck (20). I wish I had been a part of that gathering but training at work and MLB would not allow me to be there!

So, since I and other Cali Roc'ers could not make it to that big dance, we will just have to throw our own party on the Left Coast, WEST SIDE! If you guys who have already stated you would be attending, we stand at (32) at this point. A New ROC record before the meet! But it only counts if all (32) show up.

Start booking your rooms and let's have a beach party! Click the link in my signature and scroll down for the hotel info. If you are still undecided, decide to join us. I believe we can have at least (40) plus Ridgelines at this meet. I would like to try and get some buttons done for this meet so, book your rooms and let me now that you are a GO! Below is a copy of my last audit as to who was coming or not as well as who I have yet to hear from. Help me get the word out Cali!

Put me down as a maybe. Only because if i do goit would be on a SATURDAY only event for me. For i have a family planned vacation heading down towards Disneyland and i do not want my god children(3 of them) to miss this event, being their first time to both parks come Sunday October First. We are leaving sunday early morning around 6am. But we are using a different vehicle that holds 8. Anyways, if all goes well, i could meet you all on Saturday, for a day use of time. Maybe i might throw a little fishing off the Pier. ITS FREE FISHING on ALL PUBLIC PIERS(UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED or RULES DIFFER per PIER). SANTA CRUZ PUBLIC PIER is a FREE FISHING EVIRONMENT. NO LICENSE Required and a great load of EATERIES to enjoy. Parking is around $2 per hour....but they start charging at 10am. If you enter the pier early, you dont get a parking tab. They just assume you went in at 10 am! Ok, as for fishing, its 2 pole limit, or 1 pole and 1 crab net. Or a few throw nets for bait fish. Either way, its just something to do on the pier. The fees paid for the parking on the pier help keep the buildings intact and restrooms in working order. Its a very friendly, touristy pier! I suggest visiting the pier at least that weekend! A possible RIDGE pic with the SANTA CRUZ BEACH BOARDWALK in the background could erect a great group ROC meet photo. Well, hope to be able to meet and greet on saturday the 30th.

Having you there for the day is just fine Bill! You will make 32. :)

Tony, you've got a second thread going ( the original poll) and people are replying there.

Perhaps you can put a final post there (directing them to this one)then have the 'poll' one locked by a moderator.

I am now at the 95% 'will be there' stage. Talking with my friend who is offering to put us (wife & kids) up in Santa Cruz. Otherwise, we may stay in Freemont.

There is a Best Western (3 star) for only $51/night, 2 queen beds. Can't find anything big enough (like that) that's affordable for three nights.

I want to head up to San Francisco and see Alcatraz on Sunday before driving back on the following Monday.

Speaking of Monday, next Monday (28th) I'm having lunch with AZ Ridgeliner (Mike) and Tucker. There's a chance one or both may come out to the meet as well. But with the long drive (12-13 hours), I think at least Mike would need to start a day sooner and break it up. Not sure about Tucker.

I'll keep you posted. Next post on this thread should be confirming my attendance!! :D

Once Ladyridge invoices me, I will try to spread it out with all who attends equally, is that fair? :o Daryl, it won't be the same with you and Lydia! Ron logistically, we just need a meet point when we SoCalers want to caravan up north, I personally would like to get an early head start and take Route 1. If we do that, anyone south of me can meet at Denny"s for breakfast and get on the road down Pacific Coast Highway by my house. 7th Street and PCH, exA4, I have been editng the attendance list as I get messages from the members if they are coming or changed their minds. Go to about page 6 for that list. My girl from Nebraska/Iowa will be joining us that weekend. Here is a picture of Nancy (My Naneki) 2 years ago. Muy Bonita y caliente! :D

We can decide on dinner during lunch that day of the meet. We all usually get together for dinner as well. I will be there I hope by Friday afternoon, Meet with Linda (Khanartist) to pick up restaurant lists and maps for those without Nav. Have a mini meet dinner with those who will also be there that Friday. We can meet around 10:00 on Saturday for the photo op, have lunch, do the boardwalk, have dinner. Tony, is there an 'itinerary' for the meet? Where and when are we meeting? Where are we going for lunch? What's after that, if anything.

Since this will be my only day near the 'beach', I plan on going there with the kids. There's also an amusement park, so I don't know if anyone else is going or taking family.

If we have as many attending as you think, and most are bringing family, there could very well be 100 people. That's gonna make it hard to plan for lunch and dinner too. Things to think about as it gets closer......

If you have a time and place where we are meeting, that would be a good start. Just keep us posted!

Linda is helping me with that portion of the meet. I will contact her this weekend and try to finalize the itinerary. Friday arrivals will more than likely meet for lunch or dinner, meet the morning of for the photo op, play at the boardwalk, have dinner, Sunday is whatever you want to do.

Here are some of Linda's ideas from emails she has sent me, if there is a website check it out and voice your opinions.

Anthony:

My husband suggested a nice 'santa cruz shot' at the Santa Cruz Wharf...a
nice picturesque area of SC...

If you can get all the ridgelines in and out quickly...there is NO CHARGE
for parking (first 30 minutes free).

Here is a linky....

Linda

Tony:
I'm going to HIGHLY RECOMMEND Armadillo Willy's in Santa Cruz for Saturday
night dinner.

Again, not sure how many folks are coming...so I'd be glad to reserve a
special room or????

Here is the link to the website with menus, etc.
http://www.armadillowillys.com/

We shall be at the Capitola location (near Santa Cruz). There is an
address/phone number, etc.

The food here is EXCELLENT...and there should be something for everyone.
Prices are not above $15.00 for anything and they give you plenty.

Let me know what you think.

Which day would this be? Sept 30th? Because it is 'self serve' I don't think
the group will be charged 20% gratuity...I'll try and reserve a banquet room
or have them arrange tables for the large group.

I will need a head count. This is for Saturday night...and I'll need a time
we all will be eating.

I was checking out a few things for Santa Cruz. This link (http://santacruz.org/index.shtml) has a lot of information, including the 'Boardwalk'. That looks like a lot of fun and a whole day event!

They do have all day tickets and be sure to check out the Costco discount ($79.99 unlimited rides for family of four). I think this is where you will find me after the photo op! Looks like a great place for those traveling with kids, or who are kids at heart!

I made contact with Linda, (Khanartist), this morning. Keep this in mind, all of you who are coming to the CAL ROC Meet, we are coming to a California Beach Community, parking may be at a premium. We surely want to meet where we can pass out the name buttons, have our photo op, chat and hang out with our other members we have not meet yet, at one location to eat.

After that if we still want to hang out with each other on the boardwalk, that is great! We may have to drive in trail to a location that we all can eat at the same place then travel back to the boardwalk. Just keep that in mind. I'm looking forward to this being our great meet ever and hanging with our Northern and Central brothers and sisters!

This is going to be a great weekend and I get to take the Ridgeline Raider to a Raider Game! :D

A couple of questions Tony, do you want the $10 as a check to your address? Next question, is there a final itinerary for the event. I can only attend on Saturday but I will gladly send the $10. I'll be driving solo so if anyone from the Sacramento area is planning on going for only Saturday send me a PM and maybe we can caravan down to Santa Cruz.

Hey Tony.....keep in mind that if we get as many RL's as you are anticipating (34 or more), it will be difficult to find one place to all have lunch together. Because you know there will be more than 34 people! Figure on 60-75 people and that's gonna make it difficult to do.

I guess first thing's first and that should be where (and what time) we will meet. The most scenic area for 30-40 RL's is a tough thing in a beach town. I was thinking a state park in Santa Cruz. The link I sent earlier lists 5-6 in the area, and perhaps one of them has some good ocean backgrounds where we can park. I recommend a 10 a.m. meet, and that will give us about 2 hours to get from the meet point to a lunch location. May want to consider 2 adjacent restaurants to give a variety of choice.

The Boardwalk hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parking there is $10, not sure about general admission or if the amusement park is free and pay per ride (or all day ticket). For me, that's where I will head after the photo ops. There's plenty of food there and something to do for the kids.

I don't know what else might be on the itinerary.

Dinner will present the same problem as far as # of people and parking. Armadillo Willy's menu looks good, and if you get the commitments, a room put aside might work for a large group.

Just some random thoughts....give me a call and we can talk more! Also, I have a connection in Santa Cruz as well if we need some additional information ;)

Like minds think alike Kev, that is actually what I spoke with Linda about on Monday by phone, I mentioned to her what happened at the Laguna Beach meet in March. I will be forwarding your suggustion to her to re-enforce what I had already talked with her about. The main thing we want to do is meet everyone we haven't met, hand out the buttons, take the photo, hang out together at least most of that time on Saturday.

[QUOTE=Toobuku]Okay CAL ROC, Ladyridge has sent the invoice which is listed below. If you know you are coming and your name is on the list, please send your money for your own button/name tag:$2:00 +$1.80=$3.80 that should more than cover the banner and buttons if all on the current list come. I round the price up $.04 on the banner to make it easy on you. Send you chips to the paypal account of Ladyridge below and she will notify me of the end results Thank you all for assisting in this.

We sent the funds a long time ago to J.C. Do you have any ideas on where to meet for the SoCal caravan going up the coast?

Hello Doug, I'm not sure when you are headed up to Santa Cruz but I'm going Saturday morning. Any SoCal ROC'ers leaving for the Santa Cruz Meet on September 29, on Friday? Are you up to a scenic route up Cal Route 1? Nancy has ever seen this part of Cali and I am going to leave Friday morning after breakfast and take the Coastal Route all the way up. Anyone care to join us?

The scenic route tends to be a little woozie for some poeple. For me, no, only cause i was the driver. But the scenic route can tend to wooz the living day lights out of some people due to the intense up and down and hill like roads along the coastal "1" hwy. But it is definately a SCENIC route!!

Dragonslayer has not replied back to me on a meet time. I am very flexible. I was thinking of taking I5 down to 580 then to 680 so meeting in Livermore should work out fine. AGAIN, all those near the I5, I580, I680 to Hwy17 corridor leaving on Saturday morning, lets meet...somewhere in San Jose perhaps? It would be neat to see a line of RLs on the winding Hwy17.

The last town before entering Santa Cruz mountain is Los Gatos. It's the cheaper place to get gas compared to Santa cruz.

Or we can meet at the summit of Santa Cruz mountain on HW 17. There is huge parking lot for the summit restaurant. but I think the restaurant is closed.

Summit, 23123 Santa Cruz Hwy. (Highway 17), Los Gatos.

I thought it might be nicer to see a line of RLs driving through the windy Hwy 17 so I figured SJ would be a good place to start...I guess Los Gatos is not bad either. A nice meeting point could be Valley Fair shopping mall off Stevens Creek. In the early morning the parking lot is probably empty and it is located right off the freeway.

Blue
09-05-2006, 01:03 PM
OMG! Are you kidding? Valley Fair is a zoo on weekends! It will take us an hour to get in and out of the parking lot, that is assuming you can even get in the parking lot.

The next available place is Hamilton exit. we can meet at Fry's Electronics parking lot.

After Hamilton, the only easy exits to meet woud be Los Gatos. For those of you coming from Sacto, you might want to get lunch here and gas up.

Ok, I am out of ideas. Anybody else knows the area well?

So far, Livermore Costco(off 580, airway blvd exit) has the cheapest to commuter price on gas at this moment. Last night i filled up there was $2.81!! Anyhow, i will be in San Jose the 29th, and i will be at my buddy's house 1 mile from Fry's off Hamilton! By the way, if those who didnt know, EBAY is located down the street from Fry's, past the Star Bucks on the Left side(considered san jose), then there is a star bucks on the right,(considered in the city of Campbell) Go figure, a street separating 2 cities! Anyways, meeting at fry's on saturday, did i hear that right? Well, whatever the case, just let me know, ill be aroudn the corner and will be with you all in santa cruz the 30th.

Blue... I liked your original idea of meeting at the summit. I would rather get out of the valley and up in the hills before the maddening weekend crowds appear at Valley Fair, or at Fry's, for that matter. What about where The Cats restaurant/bar used to be, at the bottom of the hill just outside Los Gatos? I haven't been that way for awhile, but maybe that's an option?

Bongus, Psango, Phil, and any other Sacramento/Stockton/Far East Bay owners -- we should start trying to decide when and where we meet for our caravan?

Blue
09-06-2006, 12:04 AM
I don't know where Cat's bar was.

Has anyone been to the Hwy 17 summit lately? Is the parking lot still available? I think the restaurant is closed.

The summit is probably the most wide open and conveinient spot for all of us to meet from the Bay Area.

Hey, how about a tailgate party there for lunch?

psango
09-06-2006, 01:51 AM
A tailgate party sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure if the Summit restaurant is open or not, but it has a large parking lot, larger than the Cats (Cast is on the right side a little past the Los Gatos on-ramp to Hwy 17, before you pass Lexington resivor).

I will only be able to drive down for part of the day and then I have come back and take care of some family obligations that came up unexpectedly.

Still would like to make at least a cameo appearance. UglyTruckling, Phil, Bongus and any others leaving from near Livermore, we could meet up somewhere in town and head down as a small caravan to meet the group at Summit Inn. Just a thought :)

You can figure the gathering time to be between 10:00 and 11:30 Remember Laguna Beach in March? I will be there a little sooner I hope. Bongus, it takes about one hour from 580/680 to the summit. so Whenever you decide to meet at 580/680, I will be at the summit one hour later. From the summit to the boardwalk is about 30 minutes.

I think we should meet at noon, that will give the SoCals people time to drive up. The drive time from UCLA to Santa Cruz on 101 is about 5 hours non-stop.

If you're coming from the north on 680, you'll need to take the 580 east exit off of 680 -- then look for the Hacienda exit off of 580 (it's the next exit past Hopyard) -- turn left onto Hacienda, go up over the overpass, and then this big Hacienda crossings/movie theater parking lot is on the right.

If you're coming from the east on 580, as you enter Dublin/Pleasanton, past Livermore, you'll see the Hacienda exit (it's the next exit past Santa Rita) -- just stay to the right, and this big Hacienda crossings/movie theater parking lot is on the right.

It's a VERY big parking lot -- may I suggest we meet near the Mimi's Cafe? -- it's near the outer edge of the parking lot (closer to Hacienda).

Anthony:
Due to schedule conflicts and vacation to Portland, OR, I will not be able to get over to the Santa Cruz area for photos and/or checking out any of the meal locations. Really sorry...

The best I can do is give you names/address of a number of 'choices' for breakfast/lunch/dinner... I'm also going to suggest the Wharf or Santa Cruz Pier for photo opp. Or if the group decides, The Corralitos Market or Gizdich ranch would also make great photo opps (although not at ‘the beach).

If you want to MAKE SURE the group eats together, I suggest you call the venue, ask for the Manager or Ass't Manager and book a private room under ROC. That way all the ROC folks are assured of sitting together.
Just know you'll pay that extra 18% gratuity as a 'group' over 6 or 8 people! As I mentioned, this is a beach town, and most of the restaurants are not large enough to accommodate 20+ trucks for parking. This is info the group should know...so tempers don't flare due to parking issues or the 'smallness' of the venues.

A few places I've picked are order at register/open seating...so you won't get the charge for a group of people. They are **'d and in bold.
I’m also suggesting two ‘day trips’ to Corralitos Market & Sausage Co. or Gizdich Ranch. This Market has wonderful jerky and home-made sausage. Perfect for gifts or lunch. The ranch has EXPENSIVE home made pies (and you can buy by the slice). Another great gift.

With that many folks, finding a restaurant where 30+ people can sit together becomes like planning a party or 'wedding'...so you'll need to call NOW to get advance seating, to see if this place can hold you (many places are very small), etc.

I'm sending you a number of choices so folks can pick what they want to eat--all of them voted 'BEST' of Santa Cruz by the locals there. Addresses provided when given. Some will have to be found using google, or the Santa Cruz phone book in the hotel room.

Again, I apologize for not being able to scout the area for you...but I could not squeeze a santa cruz 'recon' into my hectic schedule.

Let me know if I can help you out any further. Sorry, but this is the best I can do-which I hope is more than you had before you got started!

Linda

Linda's recommended Daytrip: bring home jerky or sausage (and eat at the market deli)!
Corralitos in bloom: near Santa Cruz, country roads lead to roses and redwoods
Travel: Northern California Day Trip

Nestled in the southern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Corralitos is an easy place to miss. It doesn't have its own zip code. Nor does it have lodging, gift shops, or beachfront real estate. But it does have acres and acres of apple orchards, a local sausage market whose wares attract a cultlike following, and a 50-year-old heirloom-rose garden surrounded by redwood forests.

Although it's only 15 miles from downtown Santa Cruz, Corralitos can feel as much like New England as it does California (redwoods aside). Maybe it's those apple orchards and the old farmhouses, or the gently winding backroads that lead in and out of shady forests. Whatever the reason, a visit to Corralitos is a wonderful way to escape.

The area is best explored on wheels, two or four. A bicycle offers country air and good exercise; a car has the advantage of giving you a place to stow your goods. You can begin your trip the way many locals start their day-at the funky Corralitos Coffee Court (2904 Freedom Blvd.; 831/722-5700), where each cup of coffee is made to order.

While some would argue that Corralitos is too small to be considered a town, none would deny that the Corralitos Market & Sausage Co. (569 Corralitos Rd.; 831/722-2633) is the town center. Referred to simply as "the market," this 46-year-old institution is the social hub of the community. There's a little store selling basic groceries, with a meat and deli counter at the back. More than 25 kinds of sausages (fresh and applewoodsmoked) are made on the premises. The top-selling sausage is Cheezy Bavarian, says president Dave Peterson, who has worked here 27 years. More adventurous eaters might want to bring home some venison or ostrich sausage.

If you're just here for lunch, grab a sausage sandwich and eat at the grassy park across the street. Those wanting to stretch their legs can explore the nearby grounds and outbuildings of the 1960s Corralitos Community Center, on Brown's Valley Road.

≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈

Rose lovers should head 2 miles north to the small, family-owned Roses of Yesterday and Today (803 Brown's Valley Rd.; www.rosesofyesterday.com or 831/728-1901). Stroll through the redwood-edged garden featuring unusual and oldfashioned roses of every size and hue. The company does a lot of business through the mail, but some popular potted roses are available on-site.

If you're not in a hurry, continue north on Brown's Valley Road for another 1/2 mile, then turn onto Hazel Dell Road (which eventually becomes Casserly Road), where you can meander through shady redwood groves for 10 miles before the road loops around and emerges in Watsonville. Or go back to the market and take Eureka Canyon Road through the Santa Cruz Mountains. If you like country roads, there's not a wrong turn to take.

Gizdich Ranch is a third-generation, family-run farm business that has been in existence for more than 25 years. The down-home ranch offers pick-yourself fruits such as apples, strawberries, raspberries, ollalieberries and blackberries. They also offer fresh, home-style pies and fruit juices, guided tours for schools, and country antiques. The ranch, located in Watsonville between Monterey and Santa Cruz, offers a close-up look at the way fruit is grown and picked. Kids love it. Although a popular spot for school field trips, the Gizdich Ranch is also open to the public and is a great outing for families looking to do something outdoors and educational. Friendly Gizdich family members lead tours on the life cycle of an apple -- from planting to pies, applesauce or juice. They have several varieties, including Gravenstein, McIntosh, Royal gala and Winter Banana. Families can take self-guided walks through the orchards, and, each Saturday, watch how the apples are pressed. Call to see what fruit is currently in season. In the gift shop, you can browse through jars of fresh berries, jams and delicious, right-out-of-the-oven pies to take home. There are several affordable restaurants within 10 minutes' driving distance, including Super Taqueria and the Beach Street Cafe, a favorite spot for Watsonville locals, known for its all-day breakfast menu.

Maybe, given all of Linda's concerns about fitting 30+ people into a restaurant, we should focus on our afternoon photo shoot and talking about our trucks and wandering the Boardwalk, pier, wharf, rather than stressing out now about what to do about dinner? Then those who are left at the end of the day on Saturday, which I suspect will be a smaller number than those who start out the day, would be free to choose a restaurant based on their numbers at the end of the day? If that makes any sense....

And... maybe after we all meet in the morning at some central location, we could all get take out/picnic food from our choice of restaurants, and then meet again somewhere to eat? Like one of the state parks nearby Santa Cruz? We could tailgate as a big group....

I'm replying mostly to check that I'm in for email notification. I haven't been getting emails when folks reply! So now I gotta read ten pages to catch up. Sheesh! ;)
My thingy (below this reply) says "instant email notification" alright. Hmmm.
I'l just keep checking, but now I need to do some reading.
I'm getting really pumped about this meet. So is my family, maybe six of them. Don't worry, they know what's going on, and that they'll have to fend for themselves some.
I'll likely do the morning and/or noon group thing myself then hang with them Saturday evening.
See y'all

True,

Getting 30 people to drive to a restaurant will takes 3 hours to finish a meal. The weather is so nice in september so maybe we should consider getting carryout and tailgating. Then again, not everyone will stay for dinner.

Is there a buffet? it will be easier.

I fully concur! We're not driving 5 to 6 hours for a "stress test". A Pic-a-nic basket from where ever and an informal tailgate lunch with our NorCal and Central Cal brothers & sisters sounds like a perfect meet & greets to us. Those of us that hang can do a formal dinner as well.

I agree. Seems a lot more flexible for a group of the size we're looking at. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park just north of Santa Cruz on Highway 9 is a nice spot. We used to make it a stop while cruising the Santa Cruz Mts. on motorcycle. The small town of Felton, nearby, has shops and such.

I will be bringing my Notebook to post a report and picters after the meet on Saturday, the 30th. For those who find a need to make contact with me, PM me and I will give you my cell phone number. I'm looking forward to it -- I think it's going to be great! I'm having trouble imagining that many owned Ridgelines all in one place at one time. And caravaning there from the east bay and picking up the Silicon Valley trucks will be pretty fun, too.... I have a friend who thinks it sounds like so cool he's considering showing up in S.Cruz just to see the show!

I'm in for the Picnic/Tailgate gathering idea. As another poster mentioned, the weather in Santa Cruz is nice so gathering outside will not be an issue. Also because of the nice weather, many of the inlanders will travel to the coast...what makes it worse is the weekend factor! I think it would be nice to eat a sandwich while we walk around and mingle amongst all the beautiful RLs in attendance.

Both Seacliff and Sunset State Beaches have big parking lots (or at least they used to), and access to the beach. They're a short bit south of Santa Cruz, closer to Aptos.

Natural Bridges State Beach is just around the "corner" from the Boardwalk, pier, etc., but the parking is not as great as at Seacliff and Sunset.

Pictures attached of Seacliff (with old cement boat) and Sunset.

See this Web site for more info on State Beaches close to Santa Cruz.

Folks,

I think it would be really cool for us to have photo and tailgate into the sunset. Seriously, which ROC group can have the Pacific Ocean and the sunset as the back drop? Sunset will start around 6:30pm.

My kids go to the beach and do this with a bonfire until the police kick them out. Bonfire is illegal, but it would be even better!

The only issue is which beach has a parking space for 30 trucks? Preferably, we can park in a large circle or square?

My preference is to stay with the truck and do this in the beautiful California sunset, not crammed into a strip mall restaurant. When it gets too cold at dusk, The air temperature may get to 50F, whoever is still hungry can go to the restaurant.

Here is my suggestion: We pick a beach with the right parking lot, people can arrive from 1pm to sunset. Around 6PM, we take a final group photo and break up.

To move 30 trucks on a schedule is really difficult.

The least thing we need is a picture of our RLs with the ocean as a backdrop. It would be nice to get the sunset but I know not everyone will be around at that time. I still think the photo op will be done in the late morning or early afternoon.

Bongus, we can take photo multiple times. The key is to find the right location that will even allow 30 trucks to be parked together. People usually arrive around noon and leave around 4pm. So the parking lot will be tight before 5pm. By the way, there is a $6 charge for state park.

UglyTruckling
09-14-2006, 03:50 PM
Seacliff's parking lot is long and large. Sunset's parking lot is a little smaller, if I remember correctly. Toobuku, I won't be coming over until Saturday morning with the other east bay owners, so won't be able to get to the parking lot early. What about someone who'll be staying over that way?

UglyTruckling
09-14-2006, 03:53 PM
Or we could also go back to thinking about the wharf, but I think parking all 30 trucks there would be as hard if not harder than finding a beach parking lot. But maybe someone who knows the area better knows better?

(http://www.seascaperesort.com/index.cfm/About-Directions.htm) There is a golf Course there so I wonder if we could park there temporarily to get pics then leave. There should be plenty of parking at a resort facility. If anyone knows more about this place please chime in...it looks like the place holds banquets and conferences.

You need to walk to the beach and ocean. I don't think you can park near any scenic areas. So a photo would be very generic.

Do I understand we have at least 20 to 30 trucks coming? How certain are we? Do we have a member in Santa cruz that we can e-mail for more info?

If we park up on the Seacliff lot, won't you see the ocean in the background?

It has been a hectic summer, first our 13 1/2 year old golden, O'shota developed spondylosis and after 21 days became paralyzed and had to be put to sleep, I have had 14 yards to take care of including my own, we have been painting the outside of our house and now Ursa our 14 plus McNab/Shepherd has been aging rapidly and has taken a number of falls that required us to build a ramp for her . I feel like I am constantly on the go, a typical summer for me, except for losing O'shota . But I will be coming to the event . We were in Capitola in July and I think it would be hard to accommodate 20-30 RL's anywhere that I saw. At the Lake Tahoe Camping trip we only had I think 6 Elements and 1 RL and it was hard to get organized and in one spot. I can't imagine 20 or 30.

Uglytruckling, one mile west of the board walk is the lighthouse state beach which has 4 huge parking lot looking over the ocean. one mile furhter west is the natural bridge state park which we used to take the kid to see monarch butterflies. Is there any reason we shouldn't go to either of them?

Both are rocky/small sand beaches, not long sandy beaches like sea cliff. I don't think too many people will actually want to be in the sand, do they? Also light house state beach has lots of places where people can buy food.

One more thing, I think parking is free. Go to google map and you can check out the parking lots under satellite view.

I think it is PERFECT. There is also 3 other parking lots that may be bigger. The lot you showed at lower right corner has about 30 spaces.. Now that I think about it, I remember seeing a corvette owners meeting that drove around cliff drive and parked in lighthouse state beach.

Let's just hope there is not a hells angels meeting that day. the lot next to the lighthouse also has 30 parking space in a circle.

Shall we decide on lighthouse beach one mile north of santa cruz board walk? lighthouse, beach, ocean, free parking, ridgeline, tailgate, possibly sunset, what could be better?

I was a ranger in the Santa Cruz State Parks. I retired 11 years ago so some of my information may be out of date.

Some things to consider about these lots:

Natural Bridges requires a fee and closes at sunset.
Light House Field has several lots and no fees, but the lots can be very crowded on weekends and good weather. Might make getting the vehicles together for a picture difficult.
New Brighton Beach has one large day use lot, fees are required, and the lot is sometimes used for overflow moter-home parking. I believe day use ends at 10:00 PM.
Seacliff State Beach has a large upper lot with a stairway to the beach bellow; this is the most available lot. There are several lower parking lots their availability depends on time of year and weather. Fees are requiredand and when I was there they closed at 10:00 PMOn a personal note I have to attend a funeral memorial in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park at 1:00 PM Saturday. (Its about 6 miles from Santa Cruz in Felton). I’m not sure how this will affect my ability to caravan or locate the group later in the day.

It would be great if we could post a few cell phone numbers of members so that stragglers who get separated can call to locate the group.

Lighthouse beach may be crowded, but do people stay a long time or just a few minutes? do you think we can just wait for the space as they become available? This is the most scenic, cheapest and circular lot. In my experience, only 50% of people will show up so we may get only 10 or 15 people.

[quote=Blue]psango, thanks for the input. We really cannot go wrong with any of the 4 beaches. They are all fantastic! What is your opinion where we should go?

I feel Natural Bridges is the nicest of the State Beaches in the area and has always been my personal favorite. It has a lot to offer such as:
A. a nice beach
B. tide pools to explore
C. several small nature trails
D. picnic areas
E. visitor center with displays
F. gift shop
G. nearby restroom

Light House Field offers:

A. panoramic ocean views
B. interesting local color (surfers, joggers, skaters and cyclists, many people walking their dogs)
C. surfing museum in the lighthouse
D. views of the Monterey Peninsula (on a clear day)
E. panoramic view of the city and boardwalk (depending on which lot you are in).

On the other side of the coin I spent most of my days (nights actually) breaking up fights, arresting drunks, taking burglary and theft reports, making arrests for crimes against persons and property and a whole lot of warrant arrests. Most of my shifts were graveyard or swing. I never went to the park when I was off duty.

I rarely got out of the vehicle except for the reasons above or to waddle into one of the local coffee shops. Most of my enjoyment of the natural features of the parks were during the first 5 years before I became a Peace Officer and was able to do traditional ranger duties like nature walks, campfire programs and facility management. A lot changed between my first day and when I left 16 years later.

What’s really funny is I'm about to go back to work for them as a consultant. I suppose that I've always loved the park system, the employees and the visitors. I think it's the best park system in the nation.
and I can't wait to get back.

I googled McKinleyville, Cal to Sant Cruz and got 352 miles and 7 hours and 49 minutes if I were to go through S.F. and 356 miles and 7 hours and 52 minutes if I go through Richmond , so there is really no difference for me either way, though I think it is going to be less traffic through the east bay rather than through San Fransisco . I also googled Costco, I did not know there were so many around:eek: . The best price so far is in Santa Clara/San Jose at current of $2.64 per gallon, here Costco's price is $2.79 per gallon . It will cost me almost $50 to get there and $50 to get back and another $50 to fill my truck when I get home:eek: Come on Honda bring out the Hybrid, Please:D . Where do we want to meet in the 580/680/880 area, we could always meet at a honda dealership and freak them out , Ha Ha . There is a 5 star rated Honda dealer [ South Bay Honda ] in Los Gatos, just a few blocks from highway 17 . I'm game for wherever we want to meet for the caravan/convoy. I have 2 motorola handhelds that I can charge up and bring with me . I don't use a cell phone . All we have to do is be on the same channel and we can all talk together as we drive .It is such a long drive I may have to call my younger brother and see if I can stay at his place Friday night, maybe I can get him to come along , I doubt it though , he is more of a stick in the mud than I am .

Dragonslayer -- I think we agreed to meet near Mimi's Cafe at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning -- work for you?

We drove the RL over to Santa Cruz and up to Half Moon Bay today, so I stopped at the Lighthouse Field to check it out. We arrived about 10:30am and it was pretty busy. While it wasn't difficult to find a parking spot, it was not possible to park a number of vehicles adjacent to each other.

We drove on toward Natural Bridges and passed a few more parking areas, at least one of which had 12 to 15 adjacent empty spots. We didn't drive in to Natural Bridges.

To me this means the photo op spot for a bunch of RLs all together may need to be different than where we tailgate and hang around together. I've included a couple of photos.
