For tender duck that does not taste like liver, try making some duck gumbo and simmer the duct breasts for a good while before adding the rest of the goodies in. Mighty fine vitals.
Of course you could use the famous bacon wrap recipe where you wrap the seasoned duck breast and a piece of onion or jalapeno with bacon and grill till the bacon is done. Remove from the grill and unwrap everything, eat the bacon and veggie and throw the breast over your shoulder.;)
Outhouse 04-21-2006, 02:08 PM I do much more huntin' than killin'. The past couple of seasons and really stunk it up for me and my son. Next year will always be better though.

OwnerCS 05-31-2008, 08:45 PM In November ya'll need to come up to the World's Championship Duck Calling Contest and festival in Stuttgart Arkansas. I've got a bunch of relatives who are either professional guides or who provide some post hunt freezer packaging.
Do you know about Mack's Prarie Wings place where it all begins?

Hey OwnerCS,
One of my hunting buddies is from the Stuttgart area and he and his wife are big DU sponsors there. He had the most incredible duck blind on his parents property I have ever seen. It was "developed" over many years and the best description I can come up with is that it looks like something from the Swiss Family Robinson tree house collection. It runs between a bunch of trees with different levels, a kitchen area, ramps and platforms for dogs, boat dock........The sad thing is someone bought the land next to his parents and he found out his blind was about 200 yards across their property line. He sure took it hard.
I know the hunting has been off for the last couple years, he is hoping the flyways have not changed permanently.
Macks is an awesome place also. Been there a couple times with him.
Spider G 06-03-2008, 12:48 PM I hunt near Stuttgart AR, we had a bumper year last year. lots of water! The reason I traded my 04 Tacoma in was due to getting stuck in the front yard of the duck club. I am hoping the ridge will prevent that from happening again! I will find out in six months when Duck season starts again.
I saw a preivious post about eating Buffleheads. those are nasty!

Welcome to the ROC, Spider G!
We really like pictures so be sure to post up some.
BruceRTL 06-03-2008, 01:34 PM I live about 2 blocks from an urban lake that has lots of ducks and geese. The other day I saw 2 mallards (male & female) swimming in my pool. I chased them out of the pool and while the drake flew away the hen just started running around my back yard. I finally caught her as she trapped herself in a corner. I carried her down to the lake where I let her go. Am I a duck hunter? No not normally - just when they piss me off.
Smokin Ace 06-03-2008, 05:18 PM I had one get in my back yard somehow and my wife (notice it is not mine I don't claim this dog) has a Mini Dachshund (wiener as I call her)was going crazy. Needless to say I didn't know why till I let her outside. So the dog is all of 9lbs soaking wet and the duck is probably 2 times the size of her. She chased it into a corner and she was barking at it and the duck was making so terrible noise. I had to grab the dog and it took the duck a few min to calm down and fly out. I wish I had my camera it was the funnest stand off I have ever seen there for a min. I was waiting for one of them to draw it was like the old west... then the barking and noise came..... LOL
Ridered 06-03-2008, 08:03 PM I started duck hunting a few years ago while i was stationed in ME, now in MD i hope to start hunting down hear this fall. I have to learn all the MD state laws and find some new hunting buddies (i dont care if the ever shoot a duck just not me!):D

Duck hunting is way serious business in Stuttgart as it and rice are the town's industry. That annual Worlds Championship Duck Calling contest has hunters driving and flying (airplanes) in from all over. Actually a good friend of mine who bought his Ridgeline a couple weeks before I bought mine knows a rice farmer who also has a Ridgeline. He drives it out through the rice fields and it just keeps going no problem. That was a major influence in my purchasing decision.
Belonging to a duck club is not a "low cost" recreation.
Duck hunters need Honda ATVs and Ridgelines. We ought to have a Ridge meet there next November.

Howdy Spider. Welcome to the ROC. Help me tell the folks on here about Mack's Prarie Wings and the World's Championship Duck Calling Contest.

Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Count me in. You're just across the river from me (Cordova). Me and the Ridge will be there!!!
OwnerCS 06-04-2008, 07:15 PM Shoot yea! There's a huge crowd of people who show up for the contest and they all pile into Macks Prarie Wings that day. To get a hunt going, it would be for a different date as the good hunting starts later in the year. That is a great event for Honda ATVs and Ridgelines. I think we could get local Ridgers to help us make a presence.
Here's a clip about the event.
Most people think about turkey for Thanksgiving, but in Stuttgart, Arkansas, the World Championship Duck Calling Contest takes place Thanksgiving week. More than 60,000 people attend the festival, which is the oldest in the state. The first duck-calling contest, held in 1936, had 17 contestants, with the first prize of a hunting coat valued at $6.60. Today the contest is held in six divisions, including junior, intermediate, and women, and the prize package is worth more than $15,000.

OwnerCS,
Hunting is definitely not a low cost recreation anymore no matter what the critters are.
I am on board for a meet and "Have ATV's and Ridgeline, Will Travel":D

We can get the planning for this started at the Texas ROC meet August 8-9.
killerv 08-25-2008, 11:00 AM Been duck hunting for about 7 years now...I love it, being in Ga though, good spots are few and far between. Most people get only woodducks around here. When we are in the mood for something different, we head off to Lake Seminole or Lake Guntersville. I have a few lakes that tend to get covered up in ringnecks occasionally which usually makes for a fun morning. But seriously though, for us, mostly woodducks, ringnecks, mergansers, a few mallards, and the occasional surprise.
