GM today announced that it will halt production of the civilian Hummer H1

I guess the H2 is the new 'flagship of the Hummer line. They state that they will turn the existing H1 lines into military production. Maybe this means that there will be an H2 'Alpha' version with a Duramax Diesel:D .

To be honest I am really pissed at GM. They have now officially and completly destroyed the good name of HUMMER. The H1 WAS the hummer as far as I'm concerned. We looked at the H3 before settling on the Ridgetank, thing was a joke, just a suped up piece of crap GMC. What a shame one of the greatest 4x4 companies ever has now completly gone down the drains.

The Hummer name and H1 are a strange deal to start with. GM can't quit building H1's because GM never built them to start with.

The H1 is the civilian version of the military Humvee. The H1 and Humvee (HMMWV) are built by AM General... the last remaining remnants of American Motors (AMC). You remember the Gremlin, Pacer, Javelin, etc? Fine automobiles, NOT.

AMC was a very strange company. They scavenged parts from many sources. Some GM engines, some Ford transmissions, etc. The H1 was designed the same way. Would you believe that the H1 shares the front brake caliper design from the AMC Eagle? The steering column is from a Ford LTD. Tell a H1 owner these things and they'll never believe you.... I can hear it now, "I paid $125,000 for AMC Eagle brakes and a Ford LTD steering column?"

About 1999 GM purchased the marketing rights to the H1 and Hummer nameplate from AM General. I believe the Hummer name is still owned by AM General but is licensed to GM.

AM General also builds the H2 for GM on a modified GMT820 platform (Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon). Even though AM General builds the H2 it does not have anywhere near the capabilities of the H1. The H2 is made to look tough, the H1 is tough.

The H3 is a completely different story. Not built by AM General, but in a GM plant.

It's all about perception... reality would be a major disappointment.

Wow. I never knew that about AMC. The first car I ever drove was a 1974 AMC Sportabout (wagon). It was my Mom's. I actually thought that was a good car...except the part about the whole dash rattling at around 60mph.

The decision to cancel the H1 is pretty much a reflection of how out of touch GM is. Maybe it will improve their bottom line a teeny weeny bit. But the H1 is the flagship of the Hummer line. It is the only real Hummer. The H2 looks cool sure but it's just a fancy Tahoe. And the H3??? I mean, I'd be embarrassed to be driving one of those. It's like a Porsche 924.

Kinda like Spartan said, the so-called H1 was the ONLY Hummer in my my mind. It is the brand.

The H3 - Everytime I see one I think of that Bob guy from the Enzyte commercials. Compensation issues anyone?
