Hi all,
I have a little over 5k on my RL. I have about 240 miles on current tank of fuel. Just from reading this forum, I always make sure my gas cap is secure. Today I first took a 15 mile trip. About a hour later, I got back in RL and when I started it up I got the dreaded check fuel cap message. I did some searching here and it appears some had to take it in and some the message actually cleared itself. My question is, is there anything I can do at this point other than wait or should I go ahead and make an appointment. Kind of puzzled why I got the message, I really do pay attention to gas cap after a fill up so I know that isnt what activated it.

Thanks
Mike

The first time it happened to me it cleared on it's own after 5 days. Now it has happened again and I didn't count the days this time but it hasn't cleared on it's own yet. I think if the engine light isn't on then it is pretty safe just to wait and see if it will clear on it's own.

Mine comes on everytime I drive it more than 30 miles or so with the gas light on. It goes off after a couple days after I fill the tank up.

What worked for me was I pretended to "get fuel" a half a dozen times in one day, sorta like a long trip. Every time I turned off the truck I opened the fuel cap, waited about 30 seconds and put the cap back on, making sure it clicked about 6 times. The message cleared the next day. Just my .02

You don't need to go through any funny drills. Just make sure the cap is tight, then drive normally for a few days. If it doesn't go off, see your dealer. There is no set time or mileage when it will reset, so sometimes it may be 3 days or it may be 7 days. This is what the dealer is told by Honda.

The light will come on any time you drive without the cap being fully tight.

That's not exactly true. Or perhaps is the way it is supposed to work. But I've had this problem a few times and each time It occurs when I reach a half tank. This is usually takes me about a week, so it happens 1 week after I last touched the gas cap, then it just pops on for no reason. I took it to the dealer and all they do is reset it. Now I just do what the guy above said and turn it off and reput on the gas cap. I figure it has something to do with the internal pressure of the tank... or something. The lackwits at the dealership are no help.

Thanks all for the tips.

My main problem is there is no doubt in my mind, the cap was on properly. The tank had 200+ miles on it when it decided to go off so I am a little worried it went off for some other reason. I will give it a couple more days. But I am sure the dealership will just do a reset and whatever caused it to go off this time will probably happen again sooner or later.
