Roof Molding Rattle/Vibration

I have been getting a significant rattle/vibration in the roof of my Ridgeline. It only happens at highway speeds (70+mph) usually when there is at least some cross wind. It almost sounds like the rubber molding is coming loose or being pulled up by the wind. I am not that sensitive to small rattles, this is quite significant when it happens, sounds like a chopper is about to land on my roof!

Any thoughts?

It could be the third brake light cover coming loose. Take it to the dealer and get it checked. Also, insist or make sure they replace all grommets and clips that hold the cover down. They are not designed to be reused.

If you have a roof rack, make sure the covers are not loose either. I lost mine on the freeway. Just popped off. I got it replaced under warranty even though I installed it myself. Pays to know the parts guy.

Anyway...............

Yes, it is the roof mldgs. I noticed it in a crosswing passing a semi. I did not know if a tire on the semi was coming apart or what. Scared the sh$t out of me. After I passed the semi, I pulled over and started checking the truck, and could not find anything at all. Crawled up into the bed and started looking at the roof and noticed the mldgs for roof loose. If you grab the center of the mldg it is very loose. Used some clear silicone and put a couple of dabs in different spots and since then, I have had no problem. I wondered what it looked going down the road with the lt & rt roof mldgs going up & down:mad:

I have had a vibration coming from the ceiling on the passengers side. If I slightly push or pull that area it stops. Very annoying.

I have found that on my Ridge, the plastic trim assembly that holds the 3rd brake light is warping and lifting away from the roof seam. It makes a lot of air noise starting at about 65 mph. I hope that my dealer will do the right thing and repalce it.

I did the same repair to mine. No noise problem after from the mouldings. Still have some windshield noise, but added together with the moulding noise, it was hard to figure out where the noise was coming from.

Exactly! I've the same problem. Local dealership has been trying everything to locate it, with no sucess.

I'll have to check the roof molding.....

Same problem here with the molding above the rear brake light on the roof. I watched my truck go through a car wash and when the air came on to blow the water off I thought the plastic part was going to break. It bowed at least 6 to 8 inches up. I drove straight to the dealer, got the service manager to come out and look as I got up in the bed and pulled up on it and told him of the noise at highway speeds. He is ordering a complete replacement for that area. It is supposed to be in the week after the 4th of July.
I like what you did Ridgelinernr with the silicone. I would do that too if the dealer couldn't fix it.

Most things I like to take care of my self, if possible. I have read so many threads on here about taking vehicle into dealership to fix one problem and then going home with three or more issues(ie broken trim, wiring not put back like oem, more leaks) I just can't bring myself to bring it in, unless it gets mechanical. I stood there and watched the tech install the door handle rod clips, so they did not break anything. I do not go to the dealer for anything! I either change oil myself or have a local small shop do it that I have been going to for 3 yrs. They do a great job for me. Time to get the dif oil changed soon. I buy my own oil bring it to them and they have all the tools to do the job.

I had the same problem. Honda replaced the plastic housing around the 3rd brake light. There is a small clip underneath that lets go and at certain speeds will vibrate. $250 part here in Canada-covered by warranty. Does take about 2 weeks to order in. Hope this helps.......

Hi All,

Can someone explain where this moulding is? Is it the long black strips in the rain gutters?

thx.

I had a similar problem and after working with the Honda service department, we figured out it was a problem with the windshield gasket having a larger gap on one side than the other. The problem wasn't really apparent until I added a roof rack to my Ridgeline, then it was unbearable. The service manager had me try taping off (with blue painters tape) different sections of the windshield gasket and seeing if I still had the noise. Eventually narrowed it down to the top of the right side of the windshield. They first tried a little silicon sealant in the gap and that didn't work. Then they replaced the windshield and windshield gasket (all under warranty). This whole process took about 3 weeks to figure our way through. If you look closely at your windshield gasket- look for a larger gap in one spot than another. The gasket wasn't evenly seated all the way around my windshield. No leaks, just horrible wind noise from 50 to 75 mph. The problem's gone now that they replaced the gasket and windshield,

I've also noticed the loose roof molding - the driver's side molding seems to be the more loose of the two. So far I haven't noticed any rattling or vibration at higher speeds.

Has anyone actually removed the roof molding? I reviewed the roof rack installation instructions available on the HandA site and it appears that the clips that secure the roof molding are mounted over roof studs used to secure the roof rack. I am just curious if anyone has eye-balled the the roof molding clips and roof studs, and if there are any holes in the roof channel that might allow water to leak inside the roof. I haven't experienced any leaks, but I'm just curious.
