The New England ROC Climb to the Clouds

Let's talk about a meet atop Mt Washington in New Hampshire this summer/fall

If there's enough interest, I think this would be a great opportunity. The Mt Washington Valley is truly a beautiful place. Lot's to see and do... This could be a weekend trip for many, or it could be a day trip as well...

Vote for your preferences and we'll see if we can make this happen. Here is some info for those interested and once again, a BIG thank you to RidgeNH for another cool idea for a meet...

The Northeast's highest peak, 6,288-foot Mt. Washington, will captivate you with its remarkable views of the Presidential Range, the White Mountain National Forest and beyond. The route, the views and the magic of this mountain sanctuary have remained largely unchanged since travelers began winding their way up Mount Washington in 1861. The "Road to the Sky" was an unprecedented engineering achievement and remains the first man-made attraction in the United States! Today, it awaits your personal voyage of discovery.

Rates:

$20 ... Car and Driver
(includes a bumper sticker and audio tour on cassette or CD in English, French or German)
$12 ... Motorcycle and Operator
$ 7 ... Each additional adult
$ 5 ... Children ages 5 - 12

Safety considerations dictate that some vehicles cannot be permitted on the Auto Road,
see below for details.

* Acura, Honda, Jaguar, Saturn, and Sterling autos with automatic transmissions must show a "1" or "L" on the shifter to be allowed on the Auto Road, also those Hondas with Sequential Sport Shifters cannot be allowed on the Auto Road.
* Maximum wheelbase on any vehicle: 161 inches (This excludes most club cab pickups and limousines).
* Maximum width on any vehicle: 80 inches including mirrors.
* No Hummers except H-3.
* No trailers, RV's, campers or oversized vans converted to RV's.
* No mopeds or scooters
* No dual wheeled vehicles.
* No pickups with permanent additions that extend wider than the cab (campers, rack bodies, or very wide mirrors).
* Some former police cars and taxis have the 1st gear locked out and cannot be allowed on the road.
* No Lincoln Continentals 1969 or earlier.
* No bicycles.

A nice hotel with decent rates. I've stayed here a few times and really enjoy it. It's right next to the Shopping Outlets and not far from the Auto Road...
Google the North Conway Grand.... (feel strange posting a link for this so you'll have to find it yourself ;) )

I'll bite on the idea. May be tough for some that live in southern areas. :)

I was planning to Camp up there, it will be off season so getting a site should be ok.

We can decide that closer to the date. We could meet in North Conway some where I figured. That way those spending the weekend won't have to travel to meet up anywhere else...

Of course some can set up rendezvous locations anywhere and come into the valley with a statement...

I'm up for any of those dates as of right now. We'll try and set a definitive date as soon as we get enough response so we can plan ahead...

My husband said he'd be up for this one - and he hasn't expressed any interest in ROC meets! We have to check our sailing schedule.

I voted for September 16/17th but August 26/27 would work as well. We are racing the other two weekends. Saturday is best for us.

Funny you say that... When I mentioned this one to my wife, she didn't say no... :eek: We go to North Conway a lot so I know she's really thinking about the shopping!! :D

I really hope we get enough of a commitment for this meet. This could be a great time...

I was reading about a group that does the kangama.s...(sp) highway every year.
I think they have a lot of cars doing it now. maybe we should try for a ridge showing next year

Actually if we make it a (2) day trip the Kangamangus Highway would be an awesome trip.:)

Heck, I just enjoy saying Kangamangus... I think I had that back in high school...Cleared right up with an ointment...:eek:

We could do the Kangamangus on the ride home after Mt Washington...:cool:

Sounds good about a two day trip. How many members are there in the Northeast? Maybe we ought to do a role call and see how many members turn up. Our Canadian neighbors should also be included.

Actually, the August date is looking a little better for me as well... That's looking to be the most popular weekend...

Sure wish we would get a bigger response. This could be a really cool meet... I'll give it a few more days. Maybe PM a few New Englanders. Then call a date and get some commitments. Come on New England ROCers... It's just a day out of your summer. Be part of a cool climb and a great photo op.... :D

Come on all you New England ROCers. As brich said (This will be a great 1 day trip.) If you wish you could make it a 2 day trip. The wife and I may make it a 2 day trip anyway. Sure it's a drive up there but it will be woth it. The views will be fantastic and the backdrop for some great photos on a sunny day are awesome. There is plenty of shopping and good places to eat at the base of the mountain. Lets do it!:D

Oh and depending on the timing (and my access to the site), I am hoping to be there.

Would love to have you join us SSquire... and any other ROCers...I truly think this will be a really cool trip. I think I convinced my wife to make a weekend of it. I did mention shopping. :eek: My kids, they are begging to go on this trip... :D

Right now we have 9 ROCers interested in the August weekend. Add myself and Oznative as 2 more interested in this date(s). That's 11 ROCers !!! That would be a ROCkin' turnout if all can make it. I suspect if 11 are serious, we may entice a few more to join us. Heck, they may have to get the Mt Washington rangers to close acces to all except the New England ROCers!! :eek:

Sounds like tons of fun.:) I was at city hall last night fighting for my quality of life in my neighborhood. I ran into a guy driving a black RL in the parking lot. I had seen him driving around lately anyway. I flagged him down and had a talk with him. I gave him a ROC brochure and invited him to join the ROC. Maybe he will be interested in the climb to the clouds.

Hey Oz, I was planning on spending the weekend but given the fact I have a vacation the week before and a trip to Florida a couple weeks after, I may just make it a day trip myself. That could change though.

I go up there at least twice a year. We usually stay at the North Conway Grand. Nice place, clean rooms, nice indoor pool and jacuzzi. Plus, you can walk to the Settlers Green shopping outlets that are right next door.

If you enjoy a good prime rib, there's Red Parka Pub on the other side of town.

If I see you Wedenesday night I can give you some ideas for things to do...
