: New Cup Holder Cap
5S Dude 06-25-2006, 10:09 PM A fellow member as come up with an interesting product that covers the drink tray in the center console. It is made of the same surgical grade 6061-T6 Aluminum plate as the billet door sills. It will have short “cups” mounted to the back to keep the unit in place while in motion. Give us your thoughts as to the marketability of this piece.
Thanks gang,
Ron (5S Dude)
Hey Ron,
Could you expand a little on it's functionality? Bling?

I think he just wanted it basically for the bling but I was hoping he would post it's intended function. dbb, you still out there?
fredridge 06-25-2006, 11:07 PM Looks nice, but what's it for? What about something to cover the storage compartment above the glove box that flips down

Have you seen the "Dash Plate" from Basickoncepts? Great idea and sold at a really low price.
A billet version has been prototyped but is cost prohibited at the moment. Dual hinges and custom engraving would also escalate its price point.

Hey Ron, yes I'm still out here (and there, and everywhere; lots of travelling lately). For me, its main purpose is simply to hide the cup holes; I don't like the way they look and I rarely place anything in them (and when I do, I can remove the cover and place it in one of the many available storage pockets.)
I think what you created for me is terrific, it's exactly what I want and I look forward to receiving it! (Please PM with details on what I do next.) I also like the fact that unlike the door sills, this piece is always visible when I'm behind the wheel (I'm sure I'll be glancing at it frequently for awhile:) ) and easily transferrable to another Ridgeline when the time comes for me to replace my current one (unless by then the console has been redesigned, in which case I might ask you to create something else!).
Thanks for taking the time to create it for me :D

I just came from the BK site... was looking at the "unavailable at this time" dress bars... I came across the Dash Plate and it didn't mention which way it "flips".
I could be wrong, but doesn't the Dash Plate flip "up"?
The billet version would be sturdier, too, wouldn't it? And if it flipped "down", it could act as another shelf or drink holder while parked!
As far as the Cup Cap... If it matched some other interior "bling", I'd bet some would give it a second look.

I use the front cup holders regularly. Although the cap is a nice looking piece of "Bling" I would have no use for it. I think you'd do better marketing your own, Ridgeline engraved, "Dress Bars" Just my thought.
I second the "dress bar" motion, 5S Dude! Good thought, jsant01!
And It'd be cool if the Cup Holder Cover was hinged somehow so it would flip up to display another LCD screen and maybe over to form another shelf thing... what the...? suddenly I'm obsessing over shelving! :p
klundy 06-26-2006, 08:45 AM How about some bling to dress up the ScanGuage? Custom fit it into the "not an asstray" for example?
SSdude - are you selling custom sills? I haven't read all 54 pages in the sills thread. If so, how does one get the process started?

I wish I had thought of that before mounting my LCD screen. Now I have a weekend project. Now, I just have to figure out how to motorize the thing so it flips up magically. I know it's right there within reach but motorized is so much cooler.
//ChrisM drops laptop in a frenzy and runs out to garage to see if he pitched the optional mounting system for the LCD monitor//
mayfielh 06-26-2006, 06:56 PM The cap looks nice. One word of caution. If it gets hot there or you park in direct sun you might have yourself a mini George Forearm Grill. :p

Yes, the dash plate flips up. I hadn't thought about it flipping down. I like it a lot and can't imagine going back to the open cubby holes. See my post below:

If you read the thread, we made the project harder than it needed to be. There is no rattle from the dash plate.
5S Dude, you've got something there. I like the cover and it would help the cup holes from just collecting dirt and spills (except when you're actually using them). Are you going to make this with the black finish? I'd like that better than silver. I'm always looking to minimize reflection on the windshield.

You are so welcome brah! I love doing one of a kind goodies for our club. I've still got to cut the two "cups" that bolt to the bottom of your plate this Saturday and this unit will be ready to ship to you. I'll pm the details to you then.
Hi klundy (Kevin) Yes I'm still making custom sills. I'll pm the details to you.
After all Brian has been through I just cannot bring myself to steal his designs. He is, after all, a fellow member too and although a thicker powder-coated dress bar and downward opening solid billet dash plate with integrated cup recesses would both be awesome new products worthy of a showcase at this years SEMA show in Vegas, they are still originated from Basickoncepts. "Get-R-Done Brian" you have a big market to satisfy !!
Thank you all so much for your valued input.
The cup cover I asked Ron to make arrived a few days ago and I concur with all those who have commented on Ron's door sills, the workmanship and appearance is first-rate! In order to reduce costs he left it to me to fabricate some inserts to fit into the cup holes, which I made out of wood (Ron supplied the 2 Allen head countersunk bolts and nuts and I supplied the wood and 2 washers). The clear-coat is so thick it has a rubbery feel to it.
I'm very happy with how it looks and fits in the console. It hides the ugly cup holes and the aluminum matches nicely with the stock interior aluminum trim such as knobs, door handles, steering wheel trim, etc. (As a bonus, it also keeps dirt out of the cup holder.) For those few times when I do need the cup holes, I just move the cover toward the back of the console.
I'm sure Ron would be willing to make one for you if you ask him. (You may have to wait awhile though as I suspect he has a sizeable backlog of door sill orders to fill. :) As to the heat retention issue, I doubt that will be a problem as the albedo of polished aluminum is quite high.)
Thanks again, Ron, you are the best! :D

Not until we are at our campsite after the ROC meet in Ohio at the end of the month. Everyone on the board is coming, right?
