jpphoto 07-01-2006, 01:00 PM I have a groan when turning at slow speeds. Is this the same as the"boing" or "clunk" others have mentioned??? I have had it to the dealership, they changed the rear dif fluid and said it sonded better but in the last week it has gone back to the same. I'm going to stop by the dealership right now to see if they can figure something out.
If I find out anything I'll post as soon as I can.
I'm going in Tomorrow(Monday) to have them look at the struts and Rack and Pinion stearing.
If anyone has any other ideas please let me know ASAP, I have a 2:15 app.
Thanks
jpphoto 07-02-2006, 08:05 PM "is there anybody out there"
any ideas would be great.
RCracer 07-02-2006, 09:02 PM Is it only when you are turning very tight, as in having full-lock on the wheel? If so, it sounds like a rear diff issue. The fluid change should have cured that, so you might have something more significant going on back there.
jpphoto 07-02-2006, 09:16 PM It happens when I'm backing up, going forward or when I turn the wheel when not moving. I hear it when I back up, come to a stop in the street, **** to Drive and turn the wheel to go down the street( I have not started forward yet). This is why I dont think its the diff. It happens any time I trun the wheel. A little more when its cooler but happens even when its been running for a while.
RCracer 07-03-2006, 06:13 AM Can you tell if it's coming from the front or rear of the vehicle? Does it make a steady groaning, or does it "pop" repeatedly, or something else?
jpphoto 07-05-2006, 08:54 AM Hey all
Finally had the chance to post about the groan I heard while turning.
It was the dust shield that had somehow bent out and was slightly rubbing the control arm. Service tech said he had seen them bent in but 1st time he had seen one bent out. Have not heard the groan since so I believe it is gone, I'm going to listen for several more days to make sure though.
It took them less than an hour to find and fix it this time when I took it in.:D :D :D
RCracer 07-05-2006, 10:09 AM Glad to hear it wasn't anything major. Enjoy the truck. :)

Yeah. I just saw this thread and would have posted about the dust shield. IMHO there's something wrong with the way they're designed. For the first two months I constantly had pebbles and other small rocks get wedged inbetween the sheild and the rotor. Made a god awful (and embarrassing) noise. No sooner did one pebble fall out (finally) and another lodged itself back in there.
If yours was bent out, it is most likely that something got wedged in there at some point.
Others have commented that the pebble and dust shield problem has happened to them on other vehicles. This is like my 10th car/truck and it's the first time this has ever happened to me, never mind the frequency of the problem. Stay on paved roads and you should be fine. :(
poolerw0987 07-06-2006, 04:58 AM jp, which dust shield are you referring to?
thanks
RCracer 07-06-2006, 09:06 AM I think he's referring to the one that covers the inside of the brake rotor.
jpphoto 07-06-2006, 04:29 PM It was the one for the brake rotor.
So far no more groan. Yippee
would be real embarrassing to show up for the Ridge Run with a truck that groaned every time you turned the wheel.
Dragonslayer 07-06-2006, 04:34 PM I have that groan and it is only when I am turning, I will check the dust shield or hav my dealer check it out , it is very annoying.
jpphoto 07-06-2006, 04:39 PM Should take them less than an hour. Now that they know what to look for.
Dragonslayer hope this fixes your problem too. Might have them look at the struts and Rack and Pinion while they are under there.
Dragonslayer 07-11-2006, 07:02 PM I went armed with a printout of this post and they fixed it free of charge, they said it was a loose back plate that was vibrating , what ever, whether it is a back plate or dust sheild, the sound is gone, yipee:D . I also got to check out a new dark cherry red rtx and took some pictures that I will post in the appropriate place .
SUFFOLKRIDGE 07-28-2006, 09:12 AM I have been dealing with the same problem for over seven months now. I hear a noise coming from the rear-end, only at speed between 30mph and 40mph. I have brought my truck back to the dealer five times. On the fourth "attempt" to fix the noise, the dealer told me I had a faulty wheel bearing and replaced it. I just picked up my truck from the dealer after almost two weeks in the shop. They now tell me that they are going to replace the rear deferential.
Dragonslayer 12-10-2006, 04:34 PM July 11th, just one day before I had my rl for one year I had the dust sheild/back plate adjusted/tightened and my rl has been silent since then, just a week ago the sound is back from the right front wheel and that it how it started the first time and got progressively worse. I will have that done and the transmission tsb at the same time.
I am curious if any body else had it recur or any one have it develop on their rl's ?
