I know I saw a thread where someone said they saw the touch-up kit. Does anyone have a link?

Trevor - Will H&A stock it? Did you guys try it to see how well it worked?

Here is what I posted on this previously about this topic in the owner's manual.

Page 187:
Pickup Bed Repair: Your vehicle's pickup bed has a rust resistant surface. To repair small chips and scratches in the bed, a repair kit is available from your dealer. More extensive damage should be repaired by your dealer. To avoid problems with the In-Bed Trunk lid, do not use spray in bed liner products.

The only problem a spray on bed liner will cause is a loss of renewable revenue for the Honda Dealer to repair small scratches and gouges in the "composit"/fiberglass panels, I'm still thinking hard about line-x, what will honda do take away the non existant warranty on the composit panels?

ANY extra weight at all will cause the trunk not to stay open by itself!

The Line-X dealer and application person inspected the truck and the application will not affect the opening of the bed trunk, I agree that the coating may affect the ability for the trunk to stay open (small price to pay) I think I will be able to install a gas shock similar to the one that holds the tail of the element open that will resolve that problem, wish honda put gas openers on the hood of the Ridge similar to the Accord!

Hauled some landscaping stones today and the bed scatched up pretty bad. Wasn't expecting the scatching that happened. Very fragile top coating. No dents and nothing else, but the black top coating is definitely cosmetic only. Oh well, if nothing else, the "establishment" guys will at least see that we are are using our "trucks" like "trucks"! :D

is it possible to install a stronger type of flex wire for the trunk? to compensate for the weight that is added on the bed i.e. spray bed liner? just a thought.

This is a disgustingly easy bed to scratch. I've toted a electric scooter twice(simple $150 costo kids special) that scratched the heck out of it. This never happened in my previous Nissan Titan! On one hand the bed test was supposed to make us feel like our bed was up to "real truck" standards but guys (and gals), no real truck bed scratches this easily. I've owned Nissan and Toyota truck. It might be cosmetic but it really pisses me off!

Most Honda trunks have about three different tension levels for the bars that hold the lid open. I imagine this would also apply to the trunk lid. If this is the case, you may be able to move the tension bars to the next higher level in order to support the additional weight of a bed liner. If the Ridgeline has these, and if you try to adjust them, BE CAREFUL as there is alot of tension built up in those bars and you could get hurt. I whacked my knuckles pretty good with them when I was installing the new bars for my spoiler, and damn near hit myself in the face, so either get the tool through H&A, or use some vice grips. I recommend the tool over vice grips though.

I picked up a folding table earlier this evening which put a fex scatches on the bed. After reviewing other posts on this subject, I followed Maybearidge's lead and ordered a bed mat from TruckCustomizers.com.

There is a mat on there that says universal and the width is 49 inches. It fits perfect except that you have to cut for length. There are no wheel well cutouts either. The only drawback was that I could not cut out the ugly logo in the middle. I will try to take a picture today along with my fishing pole holder that I fabricated.

Go with the widest mat (49" wide) and just pick a model (I used Ford F-150), it doesn't matter. Also ordered one over the telephone and the sales girl did the same thing while we were talking...just needed to fill in the blank...

Don't do what I did with the first mat...first cut wasn't "square", tried to square it up and by the time I was done, it was 2 1/3" too short. Wasn't too happy with myself and ended up using it as a hot tub mat (which really worked out perfect...too heavy for the wind to pick-up and blow around, easy to wash off, not too bad looking and sort-of comfortable to stand on).The second mat...measured a couple of times and only cut once...

I think I will use my large sheetrock t-square. If I measure it correctly and the mat is square, I should be able to cut it just like sheetrock.

Hi Group,

New here, learned about you from another forum.

I get my Ridge on Friday of this week, and I already have my mat in the garage, learned about the rubber mat on this forum.

I will install it this weekend.

Is it possible to just fold up the matt towards the front of the bed and hold it there with an adhesive or something so you don't have to cut it?

Second to the bed floor, the area behind the cab on my truck gets the most damage. You have a great idea, mat is pretty heavy, not quite sure off hand how to attach it. This forum is full of very helpfull folks, Welcome :)

I was the one inviting you to the meet Saturday. Glad you received my PM. Welcome to ROC land!! What I did was buy 1/4 plywood at home depot and had it cut there to fit the bed. I only use it if I have transport something that may scratch the bed badly. Something I have to point out is even dragging a cardboard box across the bed, leaves what looks like scratches, but wipes off easy with a rag and vinyl spray cleaner.

I had the same idea when I ordered my mat ... :).
You can try that method to see how well it works.
You may find that the mat will tend to roll and make flapping noises during highway speeds.
I decided to cut my mat and use the versatile spare piece to protect the cab wall or lift gate or when I'm under the RL as the case may apply.

Incidently, when I ordered my mat (TruckCustomizers.com [orders@autocustomizers.com]) the salesman informed me that a large number of RL owners have been purchasing mats from them. How about a commision for the ROC ... :D?

BTW ... My mat was designated as 49" wide. However, that was apparently a "nominal" dimension. The mat actually measured 48.5" and they said this is the model they are recommending for the RL.

R4LRV4.3A ProTecta SkidGard Truck Bed and Multi-Purpose Mat $43.69 1968-1993 Full Size - 6.5', Boxed, 49.00" x 77.25"
$12.99 Shipping
Arrived 24 hrs from order

There are other models listed with the same 49.00" width (even one for $1 less), but this was the model they recommended for the RL.
There is one model that is listed as 50.25" wide, but who knows what the actual measurement will be!

Who knows what the factory tolerance is during the final mat cut to shape for each piece ...?
Maybe mine should have been factory rejected, but I felt it was a "nominal" fee to give the mat approach to this issue a try. Maybe ProTecta will eventually provide a RL custome fit mat.

I still would have prefered a Line-X type coating on the cargo box ... :(.
I have read that some ROC members have ignored Honda's advice and done Line-X.
Some pics, comments, recommendations would be beneficial.

I do know I've seen a spray rubber compound that was like an undercoating but turned to rubber somehow... would be nice to rubberize the flooring with a thin coat which would resist wear and rusting... I'll keep my eyes out for it. I believe it was from a company called loctite or permatex... we're a distributor for both of these companies.

My only hesitation to a product like that would be how much of a pain it would be to access the trunk. I actually use the trunk quite a lot. Any feedback from those members that use a bed liner mat concerning how difficult (or not) it is to frequently access the trunk?

Otherwise, it seems to be a durable covering. Now if only someone would made a durable rubber flooring material to replace the interior carpet. . .

This seems drasticly overpriced compared to the floor mat mentioned a couple of messages before. Any comments? Maybe I'm overlooking something that would justify paying so much more. I've seen other mats and $249 just seems way over priced. I'd probably spring a few bucks more for an for a x-liner.

I was sitting on the tailgate last night watching the boys shoot hoops in the drive when I looked down at all the scratches. They don't bother me at all, but since I had nothing better to do, I grabbed a quart of motor oil, put a dab on a rag and rubbed it on the scratches in a small area. They're essentially gone! I made sure to rub off any excess and felt to see if there was a difference in surface texture / slippage between what was done and not done and didn't find a noticeable difference. Might provide an inexpensive alternative to the mats, plywood etc. for anyone interested.

I got the call today from Jason at AH. He wanted to ask about my feelings and experiences with the bed. He asked things like do the scratches bother me or the fact they are white bother me. Also asked if a BSRK eliminated the white but still had scratches would I be satisfied.
I basically told him they didn't bother me that much just disappointing that such a tough bed would scratch so easy. I also told him the scratches are not really deep scratches but more just white streaks and that I also had that problem inside the trunk.
I then rambled on about other issues I had even though he was just focused on this one issue at this time.
He gave me his number and was very interested in all I had to say. I mentioned ROC and he said he has visted here. :D

I thought I would share this for what its worth  !
I am disappointed in the easily scratched bed, which is otherwise a great idea.
I was finishing a detailing of my RTL and was $$&*%(^()*) at the bed scratches when I had a thought (only one per month, sorry).
I got three "magic markers" and experimented to find the right "black".
Works great!!! It turned out that the Sharpie Broad Point, Permanent Marker did the trick.
Cheaper than anything else, and a quick fix for showtime (for you Ladyridge).

Hope it helps!

Seems like you could just do a thin coat that wouldn't weigh enough to have much effect on the trunklid operation. If it works, it'd be very cost effective. You also wouldn't have to deal with a separate mat when you wanted to access the trunk.

I personally don't want to have to keep up with a mat that doesn't live in the bed fulltime, either. One reason I like the RL is that if I need to tote something, I can do it on the spur of the moment. Having to go home and get the mat would take away much of that advantage.

I have an issue with the operation of my cargo mat ... the "ProTecta SkidGard" Truck Bed and Multi-Purpose Mat.

It appears that the contact area and friction between the mat and the cargo floor is too low. As a result, the mat slips very easily when walked on.
I have not experienced this problem with mats on steel cargo floors.
I cut the mat to the exact length of the cargo floor.

The mat has a textured surface on the underside of rubber half spheres set in a pattern. When I cut the mat on a cement floor the mat gripped the floor with no problem.

When the gate is open and I walk on the mat the mat walks out the back of the truck ... :(.
When I carry a load on the mat with the gate closed the mat has slid and started to fold up inside the cargo area.
I keep the cargo floor clean, but I have not waxed the surface.
The mat appears to be a hazard due to this movement ....

Have others experienced this problem?

Redridge

Jimvickers,

I have the same mat and mine is sticky never moved on me at all. Ive walked on it, moved furniture (with moving blanket on top) etc, and it doesn't shift at all. Is it possible that there is some coating on your bed or underneath the mat... I did soap the mat a couple of times (top and bottom). I use soap and water and sprayed it down... I don't consider it a hazard at all... in fact I consider it flawless... however I do have a bed cover. Maybe that is another variable.

JimVickers
10-12-2005, 01:05 PM
Redridge,
I don't think there is a coating on my cargo floor.
However, I never washed the underside of the mat. It may have a mold release coating remaining from the factory.
I will try washing both the cargo floor and the underside of the mat.
Thanks for the idea.

I have hope since your mat works without any problems ... :).

Whitney (http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product?storeId=10101&Pr=p_Product.CATENTRY_ID%3A2000789&TID=8014524&productId=2000789&catalogId=10101) sells this stuff. Seems like you could just do a thin coat that wouldn't weigh enough to have much effect on the trunklid operation. If it works, it'd be very cost effective. You also wouldn't have to deal with a separate mat when you wanted to access the trunk.

You can also buy this through local box stores e.g. K-mart etc. I used it on a Taco a few years ago and found that it does work but is VERY thick and hard to work with. I wasn't able to do as good a job as the professional spray ons but this is a fraction of the price. I think it would be pretty hard to gauge thickness. You use a paint roller that gave little control. It would be much easier if you could thin it out but I'm not sure what you'd use.

Jim, I have the same mat too without problems you encountered. Mine is 49.25 width and is snug at the tailgate end (it could actually be trimmed).

I have washed mine in the past as well as the bed of my truck. Maybe there's a wax coating of some sort on the bed. I didn't get my mat right away and it was probably washed 4-5 times before putting the mat down.

Let us know if the problem gets corrected!

Has anyone tried one of the spray in bedliners, such as Rhino-Lining? I know care would have to be taken around the truck lid to keep from being sealing it shut.

I've had very good luck "fixing" the white scuff marks in my truck bed with Old English dark-wood furniture polish. Just rub in on the area with a rag: the white goes away, and the color of the surrounding area doesn't change.
Probably will wash away after a few months.

I posted this in another thread about bed scratches and bed mats. I'm going to copy it to this thread since it mentions these mats also.

I purchased a ProTecta SkidGard Bed Mat from TruckCustomizers.com. The one I ordered was #5008 and was 77.25 inches by 49 inches, which would fit between the wheel wells and would have to be trimmed on the end. When I received it, they had sent me the wrong one. However, this turned out to be a good thing, because when I called him he told me that they now have a mat that is made just for the Ridgeline and will fit around the wheel wells. The cost is around $49.00, and shipping was only $13. Unfortunately I have to wait now for them to send me a shipping label to return the one I have before they will ship me the new one, but I think it will be worth the wait. It seems to be good quality, but not too heavy to interfere with opening the trunk. The part number for this mat is 6968. They were extremely pleasant to deal with.

Don't know if this info has already been posted. If it has, I apologize for the repitition.

Why is it a bad idea? I have an appointment in the morning to have Rhino sprayed. What in particular should I be worried about?
