vanbo 07-06-2006, 08:36 AM If I wanted an effin' squeaky dash, I would've bought a GM... Just got my RL back from the dealer for the 2nd time, and lo and behold, there's the squeak in my dash again. Only occurs going over bumps-- just mildly rough pavement, not potholes or anything large (like 40% of daily driving). I'm at wits end here. They said they ripped the entire dash off, and found one of the supporting braces was rubbing, so they insulated it all up and reinstalled the dash. The first time, they thought it was wiring rubbing on something, which they wrapped up. It's a real high-pitched squeak, kinda sounds like styrofoam squeaking when you rub it... any ideas??
I may try this fix... 1/2" caulk backing shoved between the dash and windshield. Similar to the painted foam earplugs that someone else had done on their Ridge. Very common issue with Tundras.http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/interior-and-exterior/1501-dash-squeaking-2/?highlight=dash+squeak
FlaDan 07-07-2006, 01:48 PM I had the same problem and it turned out to be the glove box. It has hidden hinges and on of them broke. I got the noise under the same conditions you had. They ordered a new glove box (all one unit, no way to take apart) and my sound went away.
vanbo 07-07-2006, 02:48 PM Thanks, I'll check it out, but don't think that's it. I can push on the dash, towards the windshield, and the squeak disappears.
Motoman 07-10-2006, 07:28 AM It is probably the dash speaker grill. Mine makes crazy noise on dirt roads as I am getting dusted out by the dust leaks.
Kepeli 07-10-2006, 10:09 PM Vanbo, I had that same exact sound you are describing and so did a friend of mine in his Ridge. It drove me nuts for a month and I finally figured out that the sound was coming from the driver's side visor and I must be hearing that squeak bounce of the windshield making it sound like it was the dash. I pulled my visor out of that little clip and slammed it back in and I never heard that squeak again. My friend he did the same thing and never heard it again for a few months, his squeak came back so he shot a little WD-40 in the clip, he hasn't heard it squeak since. Try it, pull your visor off that clip and swing it over toward the side window, hit some bumps and see if the squeak stops. If it does stop, slam it back in or squirt some WD-40 in there.

I wish it were so easy... the thing is, all I have to do is apply pressure on the dash, and it disappears, so can't be the visor making the noise.
omg, i'm having the squeak too
i thought it was the new k&n intake i installed, but it's not
every time i go over a speed bump or a light bump period i would get the squeak
it's been months and it's driving me nuts, it's not the visor either, it's coming from around the driver side dash
anyone knows the exact problem yet??
brich 11-08-2006, 05:43 AM Ya I too have a squeek around the drivers side of the dash. Oddly, mine seems to only happen in the cold, like in the mornings. It's been happening for a few weeks now but the radio drowns it out. I suppose at some point I may try to figure it out myself and stick some shims in places to cure it. Not a problem for me yet so I'll live with it. And yes, my visor was noisey as well but I just slide the visor over in the clip and it's silent...
vanbo 11-08-2006, 06:08 AM I had put a piece of 1/2" caulk backing inbetween the dash and windshield, and that helped until the temperature dropped below 45 degrees... and the squeak started up again. And another fun thing happens below that temperature... my sunroof rattles going over bumps. I'm so frustrated, I'm ready to dump this thing and go back to a Tundra. I HATE squeaks and rattles... so "GM-like".
grunkster 11-08-2006, 08:11 AM I hate squeeks and rattles also, and would have NEVER expected this with a HONDA!! I thought this thing was gonna be rock solid...the only thing rock solid (STIFF) about it is the ride!! Oh well hopefully things will improve....just needed to vent.
gr8daneh 11-08-2006, 09:00 AM Mine too. Sounds like passenger side speaker grille. Going to pull it off and velcro it or something...:(
vanbo 11-08-2006, 10:51 AM Mine too. Sounds like passenger side speaker grille. Going to pull it off and velcro it or something...:(
That's what I thought originally too, but then passengers were all pointing at different locations for the 'thumping'... very deceiving. We finally narrowed that noise to the sunroof, as it's somewhat muffled with the cover closed, and goes away completely when the sunroof is open/vented. The squeaky dash is still there though.
At least our '05 Pilot doesn't have any squeaks or rattles.

I'm going to share some of my solutions regarding Honda's faulty engineering.
Fix#1
Noise coming from sun visor. Unclipped visor and placed a small round self adhesive foam (similar to the ones you find on the back of cabinet doors)in the clip and snapped visor back. Guess what the noise is gone. I tried taking it in twice to the Dealer and all I got back was hand prints all over the roof liner with no repair. NICE!!!
HONDA ARE YOU LISTENING, "THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE".
Fix#2
Noise coming from passenger side. Removed the pass.side windshield pillar & dash speaker cover. I added the same sm.round foam from Fix#1 to all four corners of the pillar & speaker cover. Guess what? No more noise!!!
Fix#3
Noise coming from the storage compartment for the sun glasses, located in front of the sun roof. I placed some foam on each side where the cover connects to the roof. Guess what? Noise is gone!!!
fix#4
This one drove me crazy!!! The dreaded driver side rattle.
I popped out the front portion of the dash. the one surrounding the radio, gages,etc......Notice; you have about 8 plugs you have to remove to pull out the front dash cover. They come off easily by squeezing them and pulling them out.
I pin-pointed the noise by whacking the left side of the steering wheel with the palm of my hand. It was coming from the clear plastic cover, covering the main gages. It has 4 ends that snap it in place, but It rattles against the main gage body. So once again, I used the foam and wedged it in using a small flathead screw driver between the clear cover and the gage body. As a precaution I also removed the left corner dash speaker cover and placed some foam on all four corners as well. You guessed it. The Noise is gone!!! Sorry I didn't take any pics, but it was getting dark and the temp were dropping fast.
I guess the saying ("IF YOU WANT THE JOB DONE RIGHT YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO DO IT YOUR SELF") comes into play. I guess if the truck that I build was nominated, "TRUCK OF THE YEAR" I too would have my nose up in the air;)
TRUCKMAN 12-21-2006, 07:27 AM Why don't you quit bashing other brands? That's all this site has become. Calling everything else crap etc-I'm sick of it and some have complained about it also in the past. There are plenty of good vehicles out there and Honda is one of them.

You have two posts... so you're first post is presumably a complaint, and now your second post is a complaint. Thanks for the constructive input on a really annoying issue that seems to plague many of us.
CARSMARK813 12-21-2006, 10:37 AM Vanbo, Just My 2 Cents Worth, But My 06' Had That Noise. It Was The Dash Speaker Covers. All You Need To Do Is Gentle Pop Them Out. I Used Double Sided Tape Where The Cover Meets The Dash Itself, And That Worked

You really need to take a deep breath, Dude
We are just expressing our opinions and experiences with our vehicles to help one another with the problems Honda hasn't been able too. That's what this site is for. I know I'm not just speaking for my self, when I say that I've learned a lot and appreciate the info. from my fellow members on this site.

Whizzer 12-22-2006, 06:14 PM I agree, I expected the RL to be a squeak and rattle free. Let's keep posting the culprits and fixes.
My steering wheel horn pad has a rattle when going to rough road. I fixed it for now by putting three little kitchen cabinet door stops under the top lip of the pad. When I have time, I'm going to take the wheel apart and find the root cause.
Whizzer 12-31-2006, 06:28 PM I managed to fix three of my squeaks/rattles today.
1. Front Dash, Drivers side tweeter. The tweeter cover/mount fits very loose. I popped it out with a small flat bladed screwdriver and put two small pieces, about 1/4" square, of single sided foam tape. The kind used to seal house doors. This puts a slight amount of pressure on the tweeter which keeps it from rattling.
2. Steering wheel squeak. I took the airbag out per some other posts here and was able to track down where it squeaks. There's two places. a) The horn mounts. There's three plastic posts with a small spring over them. I put a small amount of wax based lube where they go through the metal mount for the air bag. b) There's two plastic posts on either side of the steering wheel which look to serve as guides for the airbag/horn assembly. Honda had already put felt there, but I don't think it covers enough. I added a lot more felt tape in that area to cover all the plastic to metal mating surfaces. I believe there is a TSB for this already.
3. Drivers seat. This was actually coming from the seat belt right side. Where it goes through the plastic housing, there's a rubber grommet. The metal rubs on the rubber and squeaks. I sprayed some wax based lube there and it's now gone.
Hope this helps some of you others with similar problems.

I also notice the squeak coming from the seat belt, but I just haven't been able to poke around it to fix it. I'm going to give the spray trick a try. Thanks for the tip :D
3GIRLS 01-26-2007, 12:39 AM Got the same problems on my 07. sounds like its up by the sunglass holder. Havent looked into any suggestions shown here yet. Just adding more proof its a real issue.

Try unlatching your sun visors from thier clips and see if the rattle continues.
Oznative 01-26-2007, 04:41 AM I also am having rattle noises. I have 2 different ones. One is defiantly the glove box but the other seems to be emanating from the right side near the base of the A pillar. When the weather gets above zero here I will put on my inspector hat and look into it. Until then I'll just crank the radio higher.:D

Sounds like your squeak is coming from the tweeter on the dash near the A pillar & window. They pop out easily. Pop it out and see if the squeak is gone....
3GIRLS 01-28-2007, 01:33 AM tried it. its intermitent. it now actually sounds like it is were the dash meets the windshield, in the middle.
vanbo 01-28-2007, 08:53 AM If you put pressure on the dash, towards the windshield, does the squeak stop? Mine does, so not sure if it's the tweeter cover...
3GIRLS 01-29-2007, 01:37 AM will look tomorrow.

Tlaudio, Thanks for your suggestion. I will try that when the weather warms up. It’s just to dang cold to mess around outside. My garage is occupied with a winter project that takes up all available room. :)
estephano 01-31-2007, 05:47 PM I had a squeak in my stearing wheel that was fixed right away by my dealership. They said something was rubbing against the air bag compartment.
ivanz 02-01-2007, 03:54 PM I had a squeeks at the windshield as well. It was the small speaker covers near the windshield. I took in in twice before they've repaired it. Apparently Honda inserts some weather stripping and the problem is cured.
