MarylandRidge 07-24-2006, 08:55 PM Hi to everyone,
Forgive me for hijacking this thread, because I'm still lost on how to start a new post.I have a couple of questions, after I posted my not so good experience.
1.I ordered a tonneau cover on June 3,2006 from basickoncepts inspite of the negative reviews here, I am always ready to support a startup business thru it's growing pains.
2.Online it said that it is handmade thus may require 4-5 weeks waiting time. After the order was made and paid online this statement showed "this item is currently on backorder and may require 10 weeks". I immediately emailed Brian that if his online ad showed 10 weeks to start with, I wouldn't have ordered one in the first place.
3.I e-mailed him asking him if the tonneau cover can make it on or before July 22, because we will be leaving for Cleveland on the 25th of July, otherwise he can consider my purchased canceled. He reassured me thru e-mail that it would be there on time.My wife was pushing for the leer cap since it was more practical, due to the fact that we may have lots of baggage to take because we have a 3 week old baby in tow. However, I manage to convince her to wait for this tonneau til the 22nd of July.(7 weeks waiting)
4.Around the first week of July I e-mailed Brian, using my daughters name with matching pictures some thing like this. "Hi Mr Brian, Thank you for sending that tonneau cap in time for the Ridgerun, I don't want my dad to ruin the look of the Ridgeline with an ugly leer cap.I tried this approach as an attempt to connect to him father to father, so that he may see our unique needs and we are desperate for this tonneau because we have a 3 week old passenger in tow.
5.Last Saturday July 22, we talked over the phone and he made a verbal guarantee that it would be their on our very date of departure, July 25, 2006, and it would only take 15 minutes tops for me to install it and leave on the same day.
6.I e-mailed him 2x asking for a DHL tracking number so I couild estimate the arrival time of the package and factor it in my travel time, I got no tracking number whatsover, except an e-mail telling me that the package may arrive on Thursday instead of the Tuesday he verbally promised.
7.I am now convince that I may have to go to the Ridgerun with some makeshift cover to shelter our three large bags from the elements. I also disputed today thru my American Express this tonneau purchase since it's been more than the 4-5 weeks lead time as claimed by his website.
8. I later e-mailed Brian to cancel this order and give it to someone else inline waiting for the tonneau and this was his response in bold letters below. The word "it will be there when you return" lead me to believe it may not even be here on Thursday.
Hello There,
I'm sorry but at this point you own a new bed cover for your Ridgeline Truck. You called me, emailed me pictures of your child with stories to push this thing and I did. You where placed in front of other customers. Sorry it didn't get to you in time but it will be there when you return. You can call me if you like but this transaction is final.
Thank You Basickoncepts
These are my questions.
1.Can I legally refuse this package when it arrives, and let DHL return it to sender.I ordered a leer cap and it's due to arrive in two weeks, and having a tonneau and cap makes no sense to me?
2.There has been several incidences of package theft a few blocks from my place, am I liable for this package when I'm not home between July 25-30?
3.Am I wrong to cancel this purchase, and was I too hard on Brian?
4.I am planning to buy a huge deck box that I could sit on the trucks bed and hide our three huge bags, strollers, portable swing etc? Anyone tried this before. I'm afraid it may be flimsy and fly off the bed at highway speeds.
5.WOULD YOU STILL WELCOME US IN THE RIDGERUN IF WE TAKE THE PILOT INSTEAD OF THE RIDGELINE.
Thanks everyone for all your responses, for letting me hijack this thread and, and letting me vent here.

AmazonRidge 07-24-2006, 09:10 PM Hi to everyone,
Forgive me for hijacking this thread, because I'm still lost on how to start a new post.I have a couple of questions, after I posted my not so good experience.

2. Pick the link to any forum "category", like "Reviews" : http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16

Note: It may have been that you didn't find this in the Basickoncepts category, because T-Mac shut it down, oh, 1 week before you placed your order with Brian.
I'm not really sure where everyone is bickering about the Basickoncepts problem now, but I'm sure you can post in a sensible location.
RF4B Driver 07-25-2006, 03:54 AM I have said over and over, this guy doesn't give a crap about his customers. He is antagonistic and defensive because of his failure to establish and run a business. He has been told what he needs to do, but unfortunately he hates his customers. You are the enemy. He will continue to do this. It is clear that no change is in sight. Why these "senior members" removed evidence of this, I don't know.

MarylandRidge 07-25-2006, 07:45 AM Anyone pls care to answer any of my questions below, I have a couple of them after receiving this e-mail written in bold below from Brian after I disputed the charges with my credit card company and as a response to his inability to deliver the goods on the ff dates he promised July 22nd, 24th, and maybe 25th and 27th of July, 2006.

swampler 07-25-2006, 07:50 AM What did your credit card company say when you called them? I don't know the law, but if it were me, I'd never of ordered from them to start with knowing their reputation and knowing I needed it quickly...that said, if it were me, I'd refuse the shipment and let the credit card company deal with him.
As for #2, yes, I believe you will be liable. Perhaps you can call DHL and refuse shipment before it gets there?
I'm not a lawyer, so take this reply for what it's worth.
csimo 07-25-2006, 08:29 AM #1 If you paid via credit card please dispute the charge with the credit card company.
#2 Once you have disputed the charge notify Basiconcepts that you will refuse any shipment as you have previously cancelled the illegal order.
#3 PLEASE file a complaint with the FTC and BBB. The underhanded tactics this person is using are ILLEGAL. The FTC is the watchdog for this issue. Please file a complaint so possible criminal actions can be taken against this person.
Lastly, please reconsider your ordering in the future. You were aware of MANY complaints by ROC members against this person. His attitude toward customers is obvious. If you were unaware of any issues I can understand your problems, but if you were aware of his illegal tactics and still decided to order I feel no sympathy toward you.
If you swim with sharks don't be surprised when they bite.
RRIDER 07-25-2006, 08:30 AM 1.Can I legally refuse this package when it arrives, and let DHL return it to sender.QUOTE]
I don't know much about DHL, but I know with UPS you can refuse delivery of a package, and they will return it to the sender.
If you know it is going to be shipped when you aren't home...I would leave a note taped on the door that you want to refuse the delivery.
Good Luck!
steveberger 07-25-2006, 08:56 AM ...I ordered a tonneau cover on June 3,2006 from basickoncepts inspite of the negative reviews here...Why? Why? Why?
did you read the post? What made you think you would be treated differently?

I agree with csimo here. I further think that you need to contact the AG in the state where Brian is located and file a complaint there as well.
Dispute the charge with American Express. Notify Brian that you have done so. If he ships anyway, you MAY not be liable.
Brian, supposedly has a backlog of customers waiting for his cover yet he wants to stick it to you for one that he failed to deliver as promised?
He's a real piece of.....
spdrcr5 07-25-2006, 09:19 AM First things first... why did you even place the order? You obviously were well aware of his reputation for not delivering anything anywhere near ontime.
Contact AmEx and have the charge disputed. Explain you were told 4-5 weeks and now it was promised 6+. Contacting DHL won't do any good because they will require a tracking number in order to do anything. Leaving a note on your door refusing all DHL deliveries from Basikconcepts should suffice. Bian can b!tch all he wants about this but he has obviously brought it all on himself.
How could he possibly have promised you to move up in his long line of waiting customers except as a patsy who is willing to give him more money so he might be able to purchase materials for another cover for someone else. It is almost as though Brian is running his own pyramid scheme and failing miserably at it.
Dispute the charges and file against him with the FTC and BBB as was suggested.
Basickoncepts 07-25-2006, 09:25 AM Yeah. say what you want ...... If I where a big company he would'nt be sending me pictures of babies and emails using baby talk tell me to put him in asap.- Come on people. I promised nothing AND HE KNEW THERE WAS A WAIT.
As far as filing - This forum has already PUT ME out of business !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not here to defend anyone and I am not posting this as a show of favortism to either side but I just want to point out that this is unacceptable behavior for an Administrator of this forum.
People in your position spdrcr5, should keep your negative opinions to yourself and stick to helping the situation, not feeding the fire.
I'm sorry, but it's just wrong.
This is my opinion and mine alone.

From what I have read, it seems that there is only one person to blame. I see other sponsors of the forum who are thriving with the help of the forum... for what it's worth.
scottIN 07-25-2006, 09:57 AM I was on another Forum where I saw this happen with a 'small manufacturer'. He did great at first, then all the sudden got behind, wasn't shipping when planned, etc. He had started out just doing one product, then moved on to doing some importing, wheels, etc. Took deposits from everyone, no one got their stuff on time, etc.
He eventually broke down and admitted that he was using the deposits to live on-nothing was ever ordered. I don't know where all the lawsuits against him now are, but he stole tens of thousands of dollars from forum members.
Not saying that this was all intentional with BK, but there are a lot of bad things that can happen in forums.

Sometimes things get out of hand. Agreed? I think what spdrcr5 is saying is factual evidence against BasicKoncepts. None the less some statements should not be made. I neither know Brian nor do i support the way his business is being run.
Until changes are made on Brians end things will remain tense for customers (present and future)
Take it the way you like but I feel moderators and administrators have more "power" than regular posters BUT they have to be more sensitive to their own posting.
No hard feelings:o
Personally i wish the best for Brian and his customers

No Brian, you did that all on your own. Evidently you STILL don't get it. Until you do, I don't see any way you are going to recover and redeem yourself.
MarylandRidge 07-25-2006, 10:18 AM Inspite some of the negatives I saw in this forum, I gave Basickoncepts a shot to earn my business, I'always root for the small guyand maybe give him a hand instead of kicking him more when he is down.I always believe theirs something good in everyone and using baby pics because he is also a father would touch his heart to honor the delivery dates he promised.Apparently it didn't work a bit.
His website showed 4-5 weeks and when it was paid it showed 10 weeks.IF TEN WEEKS HAD SHOWN IN HIS AD TO START WITH, I WOULD NOT HAVE ORDERED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE AND GAVE IN TO MY WIFES PLEAS TO GET A LEER CAP TO ACCOMODATE OUR BAGGAGES.
Anyway we compromised on seven weeks, and he definitely assured me it would be her on July 22,24,25 and 27th.My plea to get a DHL tracking number
fell on deaf ears, his emails consist of probably thursday and maybe whatever day comes to his mind.
NOW I'M PACKING WITH MY WIFE GIVING ME THE COLD SHOULDER TREATMENT BECAUSE I REFUSE TO TAKE THE PILOT AND HEED HER REQUEST TO GET THE LEER CAP A MONTH AGO.I HAD TO PUT EVERY LUGGAGE IN A BLACK TRASH BAG TO COVER IT FROM RAIN, WHICH IS SAID TO START AROUND AFTERNOON HERE IN MD AND Cleveland.
All I wanted from Brian was to tell me that he can't make it a few weeks ago, so I could have a more decent way to travel. Its not fun traveling and checking in a hotel with 3 large black trash bags for a luggage.:(
meanmachine19 07-25-2006, 10:21 AM Any consumer has a right of recision. If a company fails to meet your needs, then do what is in your best interest, not the company's. Begging, pleading, grovelling is not something any customer should have to do.
If I, or people I trust, have bad experiences with any company, I won't do business with them. There are a lot of people here on this forum I have come to know personally and trust.
With that said, any company that fails to deliver as promised should expect negative feedback. The best customers are from word of mouth, and if the word isn't good, then the product or service obviously isn't. Any well-intended company will make it right. Period. And they would learn from their mistakes.
I learned two things early in high school economics - "Caveat Emptor" (Let the buyer beware) and "The customer is always right". Sounds like both parties in this case have never heard of these sayings and that is why we are reading about this ongoing saga.
If the product is not there by July 25th, exercise your rights as a consumer, but not before, since that is the time frame you agreed upon.

It hasn't been used in 2 years. I am not worried about getting back anytime soon.
MarylandRidge 07-25-2006, 11:15 AM Ladyridge,
Thanks for the offer, if it's not too much of a hassle, pls bring it. I am not sure though if it would suit our needs because we have large bags to start with.Hope you don't mind bringing it and bring it back home it it won't work for us.
The tub suggestion was good, unfortunately I can't find a tub big enought to accomodate our huge bags. The black trash bags have way more generous space.

Then stop taking orders and preying on members of this forum or anyone else for that matter. The Internet is full of con artists, and everyone at some time or another has been disappointed purchasing something sight unseen or reputation of vendor unearned.
As for an administrator of this site speaking his mind and looking out for the well being of the membership, my opinion is "thanks".

chisoxjim 07-25-2006, 12:38 PM I think the fixes/help have been stated:
1) contact your credit card company & dispute the charge
2) Refuse the package
3) Contact a lawyer
4) Contact Basicconcepts local BBB.
5) Head the warnings many others gave on this site regarding this company,& ignore the minimal praise heaped upon this guy/company buy one or two of his FRIENDS on the ROC. I thought the people on the ROC should help each other look out for bogus things regarding the RL on the net, not blindly/ignorantly endorse someone with shady practices, and help confuse the situation...

May I suggest you compare LadyRidge's contribution to the ROC with your own?

As a moderator I can close the thread, but I won't do it. I am going to ask that one of the Admins close the thread. I don't like doing that, but personal feelings have gotten out of hand here.
