Bed Mat?

Just got my Protecta Heavyweight mat today. Seems pretty heavy duty and fits well. I noticed that on the surface there are threads/string that show. They are not loose. From a short distance it looks dirty but upon close examining, it is threads that are molded into the rubber. It's not a nice clean black surface. I'm not sure if this is normal. I will try and contact truckcustomizers.com later. Thanks.

Is this mat made to fit or did you have to cut it to size? I would like to get one too.
Thanks, Eric

I have the same mat like e piph a ny has posted info for. You don't have to cut anything. Pretty heavy duty. My only question was about those thread/strings that run through the surface of the mat. For around $50 it's a good deal, but I had to pay $75 for shipping because of my location so I want to make sure I didn't get a defective mat.

I don't know that mat, but I did have a rubber queen mat in my old truck, and it had no such issues. Obviously the threads are there to provide strength, just like in a tire, but I am surprised that they were not embedded out of sight. I'd like to get a rubber mat for my new truck as well, but will watch this thread to see how you make out before jumping on this brand/supplier.

I just spoke with customer service at truckcostomizers.com and they called the manufacturer. According to them, they use recycled tires to make the mat which is why the cords are present. Like you mentioned, how come the cords are not embedded? The underneath is a nice black finish so I would think the other side would be the same. Looks like clothes lint scattered throughout the mat. I'm waiting to see if other members who bought this mat have the same issue. I guess it's not that big of deal for $50 but if I got a defective one, I'm going to ask them to send me another. Especially since my shipping charge was more than the cost of the mat.

You had to pay $75 shipping? Where do you live?
I have the same bed mat from Truckcustomizers.com and paid $16.99 shipping

Hawaii. They would only 2nd day Fed Ex. I could not find anybody locally that carried anything for the RL. Unfortunately everybody always charges a lot for shipping to Hawaii. I guess the mat is considered oversized and weight is 30 lbs. so that doesn't help. UPS started doing ground shipping to Hawaii and it is about half the price, but Truck Customizers would only ship 2nd day.

I swear i love this site! Think I need one of these and I will have to call them tomorrow and place my order. I find myself hauling stuff and I scratched hell out the original facotry coating and tokk cxare of it with a liner but like the idea of some sort of matting depending on how hard to help protect the load. Can anymore comment as to the fibers and how hard or corse they are??

The fibers are not coarse at all. It's more of a visual thing if any. Thin Soft multistranded string I guess is how I would describe it. I don't have a camera right now so no pics. The surface is textured and it will definitely help things from sliding around. Now I will not hesitate to put or throw things into the bed. As for northernlights post, I drilled some holes at the end closest to the cab and used aluminum carabiners to secure it to the tie down loops. I had done a search and someone else on this site had thought of it. Works pretty well. I havn't taken it that fast, but at least I know it won't fly out. The trunk will not stay open. You either have to make a prop rod or just roll the mat back.

I've made 2 6 hr trips - 80 mph - not trouble - actually I never thought to check on it.

its still there... and still looks good - 3-4 months old.

Anyone of you take it down the Interstate 80 mph. Does it want to float around, or lift? Does the trunk open eazy and stay up by itself?
I don't know if I've done 80 mph for any length of time, although I did run 70-75 mph for about 25 miles today...No evidence of the bed mat floating or lifting.
You can open the trunk, but if you want it to stay open, you'll have to flip it forward. (Not a big deal) The bed mat is too heavy for the trunk to stay open.

Can you see threads or cord on yours? The pic is too far to notice.

Don't have a bed mat for the pickup thingy yet, but had one in my Fjord, and floating was never an issue. Sure the aero will be different with the Ridge, but these mats weigh alot, and there is really no way for a hard stream of air to get under them.

I just spoke with Jason Heuer at Truck Customizers. I told him that some of the members here had mats with no threads or cords visible and that mine looks like it has scattered clothes lint on it. He will look into a possible exchange. So far great customer service. We'll see what the outcome is.

Just a thought here, but is it possible you put the bed mat in upside down?

Ground to Hawaii? Hmmm. Don't know if I'll trust UPS from now on. :D

I wish that were the case. Unfortunately the side with all the bumps for traction and drainage is the nice side. I was wondering if the factory could have made a mistake and reversed it during the molding process. The side with the threads/string should be underneath. They will be sending me a return label and will ship out another mat. Hopefully there are not a bunch of bad ones at their warehouse.

Ha Ha. Yeah, it does seem weird to say ground shipping to Hawaii but I'm glad they started doing that again. I'll take whatever is cheapest. Ground takes just under a week, but you still can track it and it's at least half the cost.

Finally got my replacement mat from Truck Customizers. 100% better. A few cord/strings if you totally look closely (Very minor), but overall a nice clean black finish like what other members have described. I am very happy with it. Great customer service from the company. Thanks again for all the replies to this thread.
