FJTRPH 05-05-2005, 05:13 PM Wanted to let you all know that there is a fix for the wind noise problem that many of us have been experiencing. After being without my truck for 7 days, I picked it up today and even up to 80mph it is silent. The service department ordered a new windshield and moulding, replaced both and that seems to have eliminated the problem. If any of you wanted your service departments to contact my dealer for the specifics it is Herb Chambers Honda in Seekonk, MA. :)
BannedUser 05-05-2005, 05:18 PM EXCELLENT!!!!!! Wind down, creak and pond to go. ( all punds intended ) :D
Big Al 05-05-2005, 05:19 PM Wonderful news...thanks for letting us know. I will direct my case manager to check that out because my Ridge is in the process of a permanent fix...so far they are looking at molding on mine. Can you post more details of what was wrong with the windshield....??? Was it installed wrong or was there a problem with the glue??/ more details if possible....thanks :)
Whaleya 05-05-2005, 05:37 PM Did this fix the excessive buffeting wind noise as well or is that a "feature" of the Ridgeline
FJTRPH 05-05-2005, 07:02 PM As far as the details go, I don't have too many, all I know is that the first "fix" they attempted was with the molding, unfortunately that didn't work. The problem with the windshield appears to be with it's positioning when put into place, evidently there are some pretty specific steps that have to be taken. They had to bring in a glass company, and made sure there was an experienced technician fitting the new windshield. You still get some buffeting from the wind I think just as a byproduct of the size and aerodynamics of the vehicle, but the "whistling" noise coming from the windshield is 100% gone.
TheRidgester 05-05-2005, 08:02 PM I love it when a plan comes together! Congrats on the fix & we the RL test run cases now have more to celabrate:)
Thank you for posting and providing contact information. I'm sure that the many members with this problem will be thankful for your post.
vertrkr 05-06-2005, 02:42 PM Just got back from the dealer, truck still there. I watched for 3 hours as a new windshield and molding was installed. A Honda engineer drove up from LA with a pre-configured windshield and met me at the dealer so he could supervise the install. I really, really like that guy. We watched and talked as it was intalled going over every nit picking thing. He was most impressed with the installers and said they did a perfect job, he did have to go over a few things with them and made sure it was set correctly. Honda was made four revisions to the molding now and I'm pleased I got the very latest one and hand made personally by this guy. There are about 14 pieces that all go together with the windshield, clips, felt, foam, molding etc.
I pick it up tomorrow after it's had time to dry. Fingers crossed all is well now.
vertrkr 05-07-2005, 09:26 PM All I can say is wow, what a difference. My wind noise is now totally gone. I really did not have a whistle like some others but rather a loud whoosing/gusting wind noise. After the exacting fix mentioned above I now cruise in silence like I've never heard (or not heard) before. I can finally drive in piece. I've had a few issues with my truck, but I'm most pleased and impressed with the service I've recieved and everything now is as good as new if not better. Now I can concentrate on the last two remaining issues, getting the Trip computer & all door un-lock features enabled. The latest info I got is Honda is still debating/considering/working on these and the earliest something might happen would probably be around August or so.
Octavivs 05-07-2005, 10:37 PM I think maybe wind noise and leak are connected. I did not have wind noise, but I had quite a leak under the passenger dash/carpet (same as everyone else). My dealer identified a "deformed windshield gasket" which was causing the leak and replaced the windshield and gasket. Still no wind noise but leak is gone and we have had very rainy weather and I tried a car wash. I've noticed posts on the "A-pillar" repair failing, but I haven't heard of anyone else having the windshield replaced for the leak. I think this post is making the windshield gasket look like a common link.
ravill 05-09-2005, 09:43 AM Yes I too have had my windshield replaced and it fixed the wind noise!! Search some other posts and IT IS GREAT!!!! :D :D

Is there a technical service bulletin (TSB) number? I would like to refer to it when I go back to the dealer for my noise.
Heinrich 05-09-2005, 09:04 PM Vert, that sounds good...so are you saying you hear no wind noise at all now or just that you hear what is consider "normal" wind noise? Mine windshield was pulled, a new gasket was and now I only hear a small amount of wind noise, mainly when I am going 70+.

I've only had it up to 60 mph so far and at that I hear no wind noise, zip, nothing, nada. I imagine I'll hear some going faster but I don't expect it to be much, let ya know if I do and it's beyond normal.
FlaDan 05-10-2005, 07:35 AM What exactly do you hear to know it is a problem vice just wind noise?
I picked up my Silver RTS yesterday and I love it. BUT with everything off I hear the wind above 50mph. With the radio on I really don't notice it. But because I am sensitive to the potential problem because of the ROC I may be overreacting.
So what tells us it is a problem or just expected?
Help?
maybearidge 05-10-2005, 09:41 AM here is my latest. I got a follow up call on my issues. I was told that Honda is working on the wind noise issue and would be issuing a TSB soon. I was also asked how I felt about the door locks. She brought that up first.
I brought up the Trip computer, she seemed to be aware but was very evasive on her answers to if they would turn that back on.
So, as soon as I see a TSB I will bring my truck in to be fixed

Kinda like how one senator put it about pornography. Hard to describe but you know it when you see it. Any car is going to have some amount of wind noise but you know it when it's too much. For me, my best analogy was it sounded like there was a 50mph crosswind outside but the leaves on the trees were barely moving.
swampler 05-10-2005, 09:59 AM Does the TSB cover whistling also? Mine started whistling after about a week and I was waiting for the TSB to bring it up to the dealer. Before the whitsling started, it was quiet as a mouse.
maybearidge 05-10-2005, 10:21 AM my wind noise whistles when it is cold out and less of a whistle or none when it is warmer out..probably expansion of the moulding.
BannedUser 05-10-2005, 02:07 PM Duplicating the (driving and wind) conditions that cause wind noise may be difficult or impossible in metropolitan areas. Use a Craftsman two speed electric leaf blower to duplicate and repair a wind whistle.
Leaf blowers can generate an inexpensive 200 MPH windblast at 70 Db.
:D
FlaDan I am in the same boat as you. I hear some wind noise when I drive above 40-50 mph but it does not seem excessive. I can carry on a conversation at normal volume (not needing to shout). I turn on the XM to volume level of 6 and I can hear the radio just fine. I can also still hear the noise from the tires despite hearing some wind noise on the windshield. No whistling or whoosing. But I also have a roof rack so that may contribute to some turbulent wind flow. Honestly I don't think I have the wind noise issue but reading all of these posts makes one a little neurotic!!
BannedUser 05-10-2005, 02:59 PM Hey zero..how do I get an email address that says...ladyridge@ridgelineownersclub.com? :D
T Mac created that e-mail address for me so it would be easier to for you all to communicate to me any issues with the forum. He set the account up for me. I really don't know how much e-mail space he has with this account. Give him a shout and see what he says.
BannedUser 05-10-2005, 03:13 PM Thanks!! :D
mayfielh 05-24-2005, 08:06 PM Well I got my RL back today with all of my issues resolved :D
As far as I can tell the wind noise is also significantly reduced, I will post tomorrow after I drive a couple hundred miles at freeway speeds. But up to 55 mph with no AC or Radio I didn't hear any gusting (N, E, W or S).
This is what I know was done.
Windshield pulled and resealed/reseated and a new windshield gasket (see attachment). The new gasket comes up much higher on the roof where the windshield and roof meet. Hum, I think that's what I suspected was causing the issue all along. The new gasket also looks like its a 2 layer build, hard on the outside and soft on the inside.
bellteck 05-24-2005, 08:12 PM Congrats Mayfielh, what a journey that was. Looks like they did a good job too. that new seal looks bigger. Hope it does work and last for a long long time.
Is that a rear cycle wheel I see in that shiny ridge? :D
mayfielh 05-24-2005, 08:18 PM That would be a Nokian Gazzoladi 24" x 3". Attached to my '03 Specialized Big Hit DH Pro with 8" upgrade suspension kit and Marzocchi Monster T 8" fork. Did I mention the Hayer 8" disc brake/rotors yet?
Its almost as fast down the hills as my RL. :D
shovelhd 05-24-2005, 08:20 PM Its almost as fast down the hills as my RL. :D
Can ya do a buck twenty??? :D
mayfielh 05-24-2005, 09:12 PM My RL is Green I can do 140 :D and that's it I'm out of that squabble.
If anyone cares here's my other ride.
tucsonridge 05-25-2005, 07:12 AM mayfielh,
Do you know if the service techs used a TSB to get the job done or did they just get lucky?... Still gunshy about taking mine in due to the fact that I don't want them to "test out" a solution.

maybearidge 05-25-2005, 07:32 AM I still only get the whistle at certain times. It seems to be related to cooler weather too. It also happens at 40 and around 70. I think I will wait also until there is a TSB issued
jeffiam 05-25-2005, 02:13 PM still gun shy myself.........tsb sure would make me feel more comfortable about it.
sculler 06-07-2005, 08:52 AM I am a new owner from Canada, I have been listening to the windshield whistle in head winds and cross winds at about 45mph - 70mph. I think it is time to go to the dealer and see what happens. I usually drive with the radio on so, so I haven't really noticed it all the time. Otherwise it is a fun vehicle to drive.

please post your results. im considering going ahead and taking mine in as well.......mine is doing exactly like yours........just wondering if they know exactly what to do yet.
any idea about when a TSB will be put out??
ravill 08-12-2005, 04:03 PM I had my windshield replaced, I had the high pitched whistle that dissappeared with tape, which I drove and showed to the tech, noise gone...
I can still hear "road noise" but this is by far the quietest vehicle I have ever owned(now it is....)( I haven't owned too many vehicles :D )
