I saw a notice on the wall at a UHaul that said not to rent closed trailers to anyone with a ford Explorer.

Anyone run into problems with your Ridgelines at UHaul? They said the Ford was for safety.

I have had no problems renting enclosed trailers from U Haul. They were impressed that I had both 7 pin and 4 pin.

Maybe this is related to the Explorer "tire exploding" problem that caused several accidents and a few years ago? The Ridge may not be a torque monster, but it's the most stable towing vehicle I've ever driven. Other than trailers with a GVWR over 5k, I can't see why any UHaul would give you a problem.

That's for the Explorer only. I think they were bad to roll over. I believe it's on the uhaul website.

If you try to relate that Explorer restriction to something mechanical you would be wasting your time. It must have something to do with the people who drive Explorers (their demographic, how they drive, or how they are maintained). I can't believe Uhaul hasn't run into any lawsuits or mega bad publicity over it.

How do I know? When I had my JGC I rented a trailer to move and asked about the restriction. He tried to relate the ban to something mechanical so I asked if he could rent to someone driving a Mercury Mountaineer or Mazda Navajo (both mechanically 100% Explorer clones). He said there was no reason not to rent to those vehicles and he would have no problem with that at all. OK, so I drive 700 miles and return the trailer to another Uhaul two states away. The exact same conversation took place.

OK all you former Explorer owners, what's up with you folks? :D

Thanks everyone. I asked the same thing MusicCity did and they agreed that the Merc and Mazda were the same and that it was based on fords publicity.

What a litigious society.

Thanks again.

From the UHaul Site:

"Ford Explorer owners: U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy is not related to safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul – we have built our success for over 59 years by saying "yes" to our customers, and do not like saying "no" instead. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to working with our customers to find alternative options to help with their move. Please contact 1-800-GO-UHAUL (1-800-468-4285) for assistance with alternative options."

I guess MusicCity was in the ballpark. Its the stereotypical Explorer customer base that has caused this.

Thanks Tlaudio for taking the time to cut/paste.

I just towed a 5 x 8 enclosed U-Haul trailer from Central FL to Lynchburg VA. Got it off the U-Haul website, I did think it funny that they asked me alot of questions as to what type of vehicle was going to be towing their trailer. I guess that explains it. They were looking out for Explorers....

I know this is going to start a war with the Ford lovers, BUT, Look at the placement of the shocks on the exploders and notice that they are closer together and more inboard than any other vehicle made. It does not take much to understand how this defect can make a vehiclke unstable, especially in an emergency manuver. Whatever the reason Uhaul states, it does seem funny that Ford has been told by the knowledable techs that independant rear suspension is the better method. Strange, but you will notice that the Ford boys have done just that!!!!
