: What's in the trunk?

I saw a thread called "show/tell us what you're haulin" and one called "show/tell us what you're towin. How about this...

Show/tell us what has already taken up permanent residence in your new in-bed trunk.

I'ts amazing to me how much crap accumulates in my trunk. I love it. I've had my RL since middle of March and have had to clean out the trunk twice. Here is what survived the cleanouts.

Golf clubs and shoes (Summer residence only)
A cloth tool bag with jumper cables, hitch receiver, and wiring extension.
A cloth tool bag with enough bungies and rope to tie in just about anything.
Ice scraper (till winter)
Fire extinguisher - charged
First Aid Kit - freebie from work
Small cooler
Home made dog restraint - see previous thread in Accessories
Throw away raincoat
Pair of work gloves
Jug of windshield washer fluid
cheap tool kit - one with a molded place for each tool.

Power inverter, safety kit, hand wipes, tool kit ( in case I break down this damsel in distress has tools for the Prince who rescues me :D ), dirt and rocks from the last Kart Race, an extra hitch for Todd's truck and a genuine Honda Ridgeline Blanket.

Oh yeah...and my bra!!

All the "printed-out" paper work over the last few days on the debate of the DRL issue (just kidding, guys!!!).

So far, the only things residing in my trunk are the front rubber mats that are standard with the RL. I'm using them as a liner for the floor of the trunk. They are too ugly and utilitarian to reside in the cab.

I have a custom fitted shelf that I keep my softball equipment on top and road gear and a blanket underneath. My father-in-law and I cut the plywood to fit exactly, have a leg on the unsupported side, and a hinged back that blocks off the spare tire area so softballs don't roll up in there. I painted it black and lay a cut silver blanket over it. It works out perfectly! (I'm not able to post a picture right now.)

Glad this topic came up, just my opinion on the subject. The black lid on the trunk would generate a greater heat build up than the cabin when parked in the direct sunlight. So think common sense should prevail here ie: Aerosol cans, Gas cans,Propane tanks and what ever else could be pressure temp related. Not sure about your charged Fire Extinguisher ?? Question should Honda mention this in the OM plus a warning decal ?? They do have a warning decal about filling a gas can in the bed (static electricty) So whats your take on this??
PS: Did post this on an other forum, feedback was mostly +.I'ts amazing to me how much crap accumulates in my trunk. I love it. I've had my RL since middle of March and have had to clean out the trunk twice. Here is what survived the cleanouts.

Thanks but our current temps away below normal in a artic flow weather pattern at present. This AM temp was minus 10 Celsius. The heated windshied wiper zones worked great. So I leave it up to y'all in the south to check it out with your thermometers. I have the dividers and I like them. I use them together or alone. Works great for groceries. When not in use, they fit nicely next to the spare tire.
I also picked up the bed extender today. I haven't got the thing put together yet because I nor the dealer saw that the box read " get directions from the dealer before leaving the dealership". Guess what was missing when I opened the box?? :( I'll send pictures if anyone is interested. Should this subject ( bed extender ) been a new thread??

Nah, you're good Ladyridge. Try going to H & A's site. They may have a downloadable pdf for the install instructions for the bed extender.

I like the dividers. They are certainly a worthless piece of plastic but they are cut to size. Plexiglass would work fine, you'll just have to take some time to cut them to size, the ends are slightly sloped where they fit against the sides of the trunk.

The black lid on the trunk would generate a greater heat build up than the cabin when parked in the direct sunlight. This could turn into another physics debate: Does the color of the lid actually have any effect on the tempurature inside the trunk?

I think no. I think the only variable is how much time it will take for the temperature to reach its maximum, and the fact that there's no sunlight directly reaching inside the trunk makes me believe that it would heat up slower than the cab. There's no question that black surfaces get hot fast, but most of that heat is going to radiate away from the interior.

Don't feel bad, my "soon to be 13" daughter informed me that she will be taking my Ridgeline when she gets her driver's license.

What was the trunk made for? Beer and ice.
What have been the only items ever put in my trunk? Beer and ice.
What are the only items that will EVER be put in my trunk? You got it!!!

Trunk vital stats: two cases and 8 bags of ice before overflow occurs (two inches from spare tire area).

Tip: keep the drain plug out whenever there is ice in the trunk as the ice melts in a rather short period of time.

Note to Honda: next model should have the trunk insulated, as a cooler should be.

Try lining it with some styrofoam. Maybe even buying a few of those economy coolers and cutting them into panels to line the sides/bottom with. Though if its sunny I bet the top gets toasty too.

That is a good idea SSquire. But if I wanted to go through all that I would probably just insert a nice big cooler. I've taken the Ridge to several cookouts and everyone goes nuts with my makeshift tail gate party - they love it! Of course I don't know if the compliments are real or if they simply want to be sure they get more free beer!!

Usual - trailer hitch, tow strap, 4 way lug wrench, lots of bungie cords, etc..

1/2 inch thick plastic does work well for dividers - was too cheap to buy one and had the plastic in stock. Took about 10 minutes to fashion.

When using the tent trailer we put the cooler in there. Going back to the hot trunk question - things stay cold in the cooler longer than I had expected since I made the same assumption. Hmmmmmm - not sure it qualifies as objective data but was a nice thing to discover.

To those who put golf stuff in the trunk - wrong, wrong, wrong; this vehicle was obviously designed from the ground up to be used to transport SCUBA divers and their gear to dive sites!! ;)

i thought i saw somewhere on another thread an item people are getting at walmart that fits nicely in the trunk.

I've been looking for a trunk divider that was cheap since we got our truck. The Honda one is way too expensive. I actually bought two this weekend. It's the first time I'd bumped into them at Walmart and they had a display for one that folds up compactly and was only about $12.

Right after that we went to Target and I found one on close out that only ended up costing $3.74. Wow. What a bargain. It fits the dimensions of the trunk better and it had a bonus, soft sided cooler to boot. It's made by Rubbermade and is called a Collapsible Trunk Organizer. It doesn't fill up the whole top space, but it works for us.

We took the other one back to WalMart and bought an underbed plastic storage box that is as close to the exact dimensions of the bottom of the trunk as we could have hoped to find. It's barely short enough that the tire tray will pull out over the top of it. Now we will be able to get into the trunk and clear it out very quickly in the event of a flat.

LadyRidge, you asked for it, you got it. The first photo is the filled to the brim version. It's actually still got more room, but that's got our essentials. I'm so amazed how bit the trunk is.

I took out the cooler bags to show the next layer. Our trunk organizer on the left has large soft handles for picking it up out of the way. It's much more suited to retaining it's shape with a load of stuff in it than the one from Walmart was. The red bag contains full rain gear for us and the poochies. The rectangle storage box has our truck washing supplies in it.

One more layer down exposes the under the bed storage box with the green lid. Then I took the Rubbermade unit out to show how quickly we can get to the point of pulling out the spare, if necessary.

I left our shovel, windshield squeegie, and lug bar in the way, but the tire tray pulls out right across the top of the green box. I've got some carpet samples in the trunk to reduce rattling and keep things from getting scratched.

You never know when a piece of carpet is just what you need either. I don't say that lightly. A small broom and sagebrush saved me and my mom one time. . . no four wheel drive and we needed something for traction. . .

Anyway, back to this story. The pic on the grass is just to show off the organizer. This is just the system we need. It will make access to all our stored stuff better and also reduce stress in the event of a flat.

I just ordered a neat looking item from the Solutions catalog (part of SkyMall). I don't know how good it will be but it sounds interesting. It is an adjustable trunk tote made of nylon that folds flat when not in use. It appears to be expandable in that you can have it for one, two, or three sections just by folding it out. It has net meshing on the sides for securing smaller items and seems ideally suited to haul grocery items/bags. The thing even has handles that you can use to carry your stuff in and out of the house. It looks like it should fit in the rear seat area too and has velcro on the bottom seams to keep it from shifting on carpet or rear mats. The name of this is Cargo Carryall and for $17.50 looked like it was worth a try.

I knew someone would give me s*** about how much is in there. I never was a boy scout (for obvious reasons) but I like to be prepared, OK? It's served me well, thus far in life.

It doesn't end here. If you look for photos in my underseat storage post you'll see I have lots of things stashed in the back seat area too. In fact there is more now than that photo shows.

So - has anyone monitored the temp in the trunk? I know there is a heat shield for the exhaust pipe, but it still has me concerned. I carry a lot of video, photo, and computer gear and love the storage being out of sight - but I have 2 concerns: 1) temp - how hot does it get? (I'll hook up a CBL one weekend and have it monitor temps for a while) and 2) how secure/safe is the cargo in the event of getting rear-ended? I am assuming the trunk is part of the crush zone for energy dissipation.

As to what I keep in there on a regular basis - tow strap, 4 tie-down straps, work gloves, flares, safety triangles, and whatever toys I've had to toss in there when I've had 4 adults in the truck and need to quickly clean up the space (something I could NEVER do w/ my 2500 Dodge Crew Cab).

Show/tell us what has already taken up permanent residence in your new in-bed trunk.
Just some stuff I need to return to my friend but since I plan on my Basickoncepts Tonneau getting here next week I'm going to buy one of those dual stage indoor/outdoor electronic thermometers at Radio Shack and place the outdoor cable in the trunk so I can monitor the temperature as I generally travel with my bamboo rod collection and would like to know what the extremes are and the thermometer will track them, both Hi's and Low's.

So - has anyone monitored the temp in the trunk?

I don't know if anyone has taken the temp in the trunk, but while we were on our trip to Canada, I did not like how hot it felt and therefore I didn't carry any photographic materials or equipment or my computer back there. I found spaces for all in the cab, console and under the doggie deck.

No, but I would suspect it would be cooler than the truck's interior because there is no glass to let the sun shine in and heat things up (similar to a car's trunk). Now you got me curious.

I would suspect the opposite. You have a relatively small volume that is sealed and topped with a black surface and an exhaust pipe running along side. I'll wager on HOT.

It felt hotter to me. I had my computer in there for a short time, but as soon as I felt it, it never rode back there again. The computer was inside an insulated computer case and that was inside a metal briefcase, so I don't think the computer got too hot because I discovered this early.

Finally got my wireless thermometer today and placed the remote in the trunk, with the outside temp @ 33F the trunk reports 41F but I would think it needs to be monitored for several days at different times to see what changes are. I'm glad I can test it now without the Basickoncepts Tonneau Cover installed but am anxious for it to come so I can see if there's any difference too. The unit is made by Springfield and cost under $30.00 and runs on 4 AAA batteries (2 in the master and 2 in the remote).

Doesn't everyone toss their wife in the trunk every now and then. I find that it helps in decreasing the wind noise inside the cabin! :D

Easier to show a photo than describe everything.

The most useful thing in there, except for the spare tire and jack, is the green thing on top of the spare tire.

It's a foam pad for kneeling on when changing a flat tire or checking tire air pressure regularly.

Haven't had to use it yet for a flat tire on the RL, knock on wood.

I keep one in all my vehicles and they are real handy when you are in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire and wearing your good pants and your Old knees. ;)

No! - I swear - The only things I arranged (moved) were the green kneeling pad and the silver coil of left-over window shade material to show the other things in the trunk, some of which are not needed.

Everything has been just like it shows for over a year.

I'm a neat freak. Just ask my wife.

The tire chains are coming out. Bought them just incase for a winter trip to Oregon in 2006.
Never used them and probably never will.

P.S. You need to do some serious spring cleaning. ;)

"SPRING CLEANING" Heck that was in the End of Spring! LOL! Just kidding. Well, i could clean it , but its basically something that would be in the truck and not be moved until i need to use them. So, i dont even bother. hehe. Besides, i have a Laundry-like basket in the trunk holding the jackets and such. EASY as 1-2-3 for REMOVAL! Easy in, Easy out! But this is true to the game. Left at its perfect picture taken mess!

TRUNK?! I gotta trunk?

Jus' kidding - I work with water search and rescue - everything in my trunk (well almost verything) is water-related - I have a bag with a survival "mustang" suit and cold-weather gear - stocking hat, gloves, another "ready bag" with misc gear I might need - bottled water, protein bars, snack food, bug spray, field glasses, spare radio, rain suit, a Gortex suit, gloves, flares, first-aid kits, small dive light, a survival knife....etc.

I also have a water-proof "boat" box - night vision goggles, more flares, a flare gun, a 9 mm semi-auto, a spare clip, spare batteries, personal emergency strobe, charts, hand-held GPS, small flashlight, sunscreen, more bug spray, disinfectant towletts...and of course - "snake bite medicine"(flask of rum)....and sometimes a small snake....:p

Then I have a small toolbox with the basics - few wrenches, pliers, screw-drivers, chain, a jump box, a set of water-proof boots, a PFD (lifejacket), a small bag with line, cargo straps and towing misc. (lock, keys, spare ball, spare pig-tail for lights)......

Tha's about it.....:D
