Re: Back seat doggie deck

Looks great and you've got a handsome doggie. He's going to love his truck even more now.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Thanks, Truckin. Spence loves to ride, I do wish he'd stop barfing in the seat. I'm hoping the outdoor carpet will clean up easy.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Bruce, you made the same deck that I did. Identical, with the screw-on legs.

Throw a heavy blanket on it, even one of those utility blankets for moving, then you can just wash the blanket. He will probably get over this.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Spencer went on his first road trip this weekend. Couple hours drive to the coast. He loves the deck! He can lie down and stretch out, or sit up and watch outside. Unfortunately he still is getting carsick, but the carpet cleans up pretty easy. We've figured out that as long as he is lying down he's OK, but when he sits up it hits him. We give him Dramamine, also a homeopathic stress reducer, and make several stops to get out and walk. He does OK for an hour or so, then .....

Airbags can do a great deal of damage to a pet.

When I had my volvo and I drove two hours to go pick up our first standard poodle puppy I had a small travelling crate on the front passenger seat that he was to ride in. Just as I pulled into the breeders driveway I got slammed into the passenger rear door (never saw the gray car coming down the misty highway) and it spun the car around. Both airbags blew and after things had settled down and the police arrived they pulled the dog crate out of the front seat and the top of it has been crushed down effectively making the travelling crate half it's normal height. Had the pup been in there when it happened it surely would have severly injured or killed the pup. So those airbags are something powerful even though the airbag my face went into felt like a down pillow.

I'm a bit torn on how it doesn't deploy unless there is a certain amount of weight on the seat, cuz Im not sure which is really worse for a "large" dog of 60+ pounds, the bag deploying or the dog hitting the windshield. Of course I guess the best option is to be totally diligent and restrain the dog to the rear or use a safety harness even for short trips since you never know when that accident is going to happen.

The other lazy mans approach is to go to the local salvation army thrift type store or the pic n save and buy the blankets from them then dispose of them after they have been soiled. We had a dog about 20+ years ago that couldn't ride in a car no matter what so our trunk almost always had a supply of cheapy blankets that once soiled were disposed of in the trash. Sure it's a waste but when they cost us like $5.00 each it was almost more expensive to have to wash and dry them all instead of buying new ones for 5 dollars.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

It was pointed out to me that I hadn't included the link in this thread to the covers I bought to protect the back window sill. I know I posted in information -- SOMEWHERE ? -- on the ROC, but it obviously belongs in this thread too.

I bought the door shields from Auto Sport catalog.

AutoSport Catalog - Door Shield - Slip-On Door Shields 800-953-0814

Here's the thread where I posted photos of them in my truck:

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Great product Pam!
I am about to order a set for my truck. It also looks like the doggie deck project is finally going to commence. I am selling my other car, which is usually the dog car, so the pup's comfort in the Ridge just became a priority. I will post pictures of the process and the final product.
Take care all!

Re: Back seat doggie deck

It's good to hear from you, Rob. I know this has been a back burner project for a long time. Your doggie will appreciate your efforts. I'm looking forward to seeing your results. AND we need to meet! I'd love to see them in person.
