Re: Back seat doggie deck

Thanks captmiddy and Skywalker. I knew there had to be some mod that required pulling of the seats. This will give us a better idea if we want to try taking them out.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

We finally got a new doggie. We got her at the animal shelter in Kenai Alaska. they weren't sure what she was so they said Dalmation/Australian Shepherd. She's about 10 months old and ful of energy. We decided she has alot of Border Collie in her... maybe some Dalmation. I have the feeling when we get a Ridge, I'll have to install the custom covers over the window/door lock buttons like Truckin did.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

She's a beauty. My guess would be border/aussie. She does not appear to have Dalmation. Perhaps some English setter. That would explain the mottled spotting, as would aussie or blue heeler. It's always fun to speculate on Heinz 57 dogs.

You could always do the kid lock to keep her from rolling the windows down, but that's a pain to switch back and forth when you want to control the windows. Our method protects the interior too.

You could go onto AutoSports.com and request a catalog. They have a cloth that hangs from the window and drapes down in front of the armrest. For some reason it is not listed on their website, but I just bought them from them a month ago. This keeps the dog claws from scratching by the window if they stand up higher.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Truckin'---Thanks for the great description and pics of the dog deck! I will "pirate" your design. Great minds think alike: since I had thought of getting large styrofoam blocks as a solid, even base...but they are costly and bulky, killing all storage room.
My 65 and 55 pound Labradoodle girls love to look out the window...which scratches the armrests when they stand on them...but worse, one of them discovered how to open the rear windows by placing her paws on the switch! not cool at 65 mph on a highway!
Anybody have an idea for protecting that part?
I'll send a pic soon, thanks again.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Look back on page two of this post for the armrest covers I made. They work perfectly and slide right out when we have human passengers. There are also the window well protectors you can find at the website listed for the thread on dog seat covers. I have both. My armrest protectors make a sturdy platform for my girls to stand on when they care to gaze out the windows.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

I made a deck for our dog that was pretty simple and did not require removing the seats. Need to head for a birthday dinner, but will post pictures as soon as I have a chance.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

I made this deck for our dog out of scrap pieces I had around the house so it isn't real pretty on the bottom.
The first picture is the bottom side. It is made from 1/2" plywood. The 2x4** pieces are there to make the deck level with the front of the floor. The 1x2 pieces fit into the groove for the seat supports to locate it in place. The blue pieces are made from old sleeping pads that I used for carpet padding.
The second picture is the deck installed in the RL. I only made the deck to fit the 60% section as that was plenty of room for the dog. Leaving the other seat down and covered with a blanket gave him a place to sit up on when we were stopped. The floor in front of it gave us a spot to put his water dish so that it was not in his way and he didn't spill it. The rear window was always at least partly open because he loved to smell what was going on outside.

** Now that I remember, they were actually 2x6 pieces cut to the correct length. 2x4s on their side were too short.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

I want a picture of you dog on its doggie deck! That is a much simpler plan than ours and gets the job done, especially for folks that switch often between two leggeds and four leggeds.

Right now we've been in people mode for two whole weeks because of relatives in town. I'm looking forward to getting back to doggie mode. So are my dogs!

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Truckin', I wish more than anything that I could do that, but our dog passed away last month after 12 great years due to cancer.

Re: Back seat doggie deck

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. Your dog was a beauty. Thanks for the great pictures. It's a heartbreak when we lose them, but I cannot imagine life without a pooch. Are you thinking of getting another furry kid?
