Re: Windshield chipping (3rd windshield with only 9K on truck)

Took another stone chip yesterday.
Will get it fixed today. That makes two in one year, but no replacement needed... fingers crossed.
Tomorrow the truck is one year old.

It immediately cracked about 4" and by the time I got home it was easily 20+ inches long.

What are the chances that our windshields are set at an angle that is very prone to damage? I've never experienced anything like this with any other vehicle.
It's a truck. This is what owning a truck is like. I have never owned a truck that didn't collect its share of chipped and cracked windshields and dinged noses. Look at the shape: it's flat! Where are does the air current push things? Straight into it unlike a sleek car that air flows right over. This is life with a truck. It's really not a big deal. Threads like this are really kind of embarassing. Blaming Honda because a rock cracks a windshield . . . sheesh.

Re: Windshield chipping (3rd windshield with only 9K on truck)

Living in the rocky mountains has given me a fair share of windshield experience. Its said that if you don't have a few wounds in your windshield, you must not be from here.

One thing to consider with rock hits is your following distance. Give that gravel truck/semi/snow plow/old beater ford a little extra distance and you'll find that most gravel will lay down as you cruise by.

I have no solution for the random rocket shot that comes from nowhere!

It does suck when that RL windshield started a day in perfect condition and now has a hypnotic star cluster pulling your attention from the road.

I do not look forward to my truck's first confirmed hit!

After reading all these posts -- now I'm nervous. Got the random rock today, dead center and about 10" up from the dash, while driving I-65 north. My Garmin will cover it, but it's a "star" and I'm worried about it spreading. I'll lie awake tonight and worry that I'll see cracks spreading by morning, Perhaps the glass repair kit from my local auto store will help.

While on vacation heading south on I-95 a stone hauler spit out a stone and gave me a nice pit and star, the 4-5 star crack extended about 1/4" from the pit. Soon as I could, I called a glass repair shop who came to where I was staying and performed the repair. It cost $70 for the service and the star is barely visable. The Tech did a great job. I would not trust a DIY kit. The repair was fast and involved special tools and resins.

Insurance companies like to repair instead of replacing. Try calling the your insurance agent.

Re: Windshield chipping (3rd windshield with only 9K on truck)

Its been atleast 5 years ago, but Farmers insurance paid the $50 cost at the time to repair a star crack in my windshield. The person came to my work, I paid him and submitted the reciept to Farmers. Obviously their rational is that $50 now is better then $350 (less deduct) later. If it made $ sense to then them wonder if they still think that way and also whether other insur companies do as well.

Ive also used the do it yourself kits with good results. You have to get the good one that has a suction cup on the inside. The plunger on the outside evacuates the air and pulls the inside suction cup tighter to the glass and then the device releases the material which gets drawn into the crack. I may have paid $20 or $30 dollars for it and repaired several windshields. Of course if the insurance co will cover the whole thing then thats the way to go

Re: Windshield chipping (3rd windshield with only 9K on truck)

You know it is kinda bad when you know your glass man more than you know the people you work with!. When I had my Element I went thru 2 windshilds in 2 years and atleast 10 chip repairs. Now I have the ridgeline, I bought it last Saturday 03-22-08 and I got my first chip on 03-25-08. 3 Days old!, Luckly my glass guy ( I must remember to get him a Christmas gift this year ) Fixed it for free. I have State Farm insurance and they stoped covering windshild cracks here a little over a year ago. So with this lind of problem with 2 different Honda's it makes me wonder how cheap is the glass made now a days? Be Safe, Dave

Uh, you'd better go talk to your agent again. I have State Farm too and they definitely DO cover everything associated with windshields. I've never even seen them hesitate to cover anything - getting chips filled or windshields replaced. They just do it, without the slightest hassle. If somehow they don't cover it, go shopping for new insurance that does. This is a make or break deal for me. I haven't been in an accident since I was 16, so the only part of my insurance that I use is the glass coverage - it better be decent.

I've had ONE windshield replaced and I'm about to turn 60,000 miles. Do you really think it's some fluke that I've got really amazing glass that repels crack-causing agents? No, it's because I'm staying away from gravel trucks and anybody spewing crap from under their tires. I know some of you maintain that you aren't driving close to anybody doing this. My wife also says this but the front of her car is peppered with rock chips - and I've also seen how close she drives to other cars. BACK OFF of other cars/trucks and I guarantee you will see a reduction in broken/cracked/chipped windshields.

Man, this is one of the most petty issues I've seen people complain about the truck. I thought the "waaaah, my bed is scuffed" threads were bad. I don't know ANYONE who doesn't get the same number of cracked windshields that we do. This is not unusual. Glass cracks when things hit it.
