TPMS... Honda Rep

There was a gentleman that had two (2) tire/wheele assy for sale with out the TPMS installed. I called him and had every intention in buying them. During a discussion about this with a friend who has a car with the same system , was told that you could not put a wheele assy on A vehicle with a TPMS onto one without the TPMS or it would screw up the system. I called my local dealer to find out if this would interfer or mess up the TPMS on my 06RTL. He did not think it would hurt it but could very well void out your extened warrinty on the TPMS. Any Help on this would be appreciated from the Honda Rep...Gary

The spare that came with your Ridgeline doesn't have a TPMS in it. So according to what you were told, using the OEM spare should "screw up the system" and void the warranty.

There are dozens of posts on this forum about TPMS..You should do a search and read more about the system, instead of listening to your dealer!

Dealers will use any excuse to claim "it's not covered under warrantee".

Re: TPMS... Honda Rep

Using a wheel assembly that does not have a TPMS sensor installed in it will not damage anything. However, it should be noted that doing this WILL cause the TPMS warning light to come on. The light will come on to indicate that the system has stored a fault code - because of the missing sensor(s).

Once the original wheels - or wheels with correct TPMS sensors are installed the light would need to be reset and the fault codes cleared. This would not be covered by warranty, as installing the improperly equipped wheels caused the problem. Other than the light, there is no risk of damage to any of the vehicle systems.

My TPMS was on and the dealer "advisor" said it was my fault for putting fix a flat in my tire.. Needless to say I spoke to the service manager. I had my whole TPMS sensor replaced along with my Weather strip and they are giving me a free oil change too, because the guy who drove our truck smoked in it.. And we are not smokers..

if a service tech smoked in my ridge, I assure you I would walk out with a LOT more than a free oil change! Unbelieveable. What the crap are people thinking?

Re: TPMS... Honda Rep

I don't know if this helps, but when my truck was brand new, it had 22 inch tires and wheels installed, with no TPMS sensors on the wheels. The original tires and wheels were aired down and placed in storage. I can only assume the TPMS warning lights came on everytime the truck was started. Two years later, I bought the truck and was given the orginal tires and wheels. Since they were in the bed for the drive home, the warning lights were off. When I removed the wheels from the bed and drove the truck with the 22" wheels, the warning lights came one. A few weeks later, I went back to the stock wheels and the warning lights went out, no problem and nothing to reset.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying .

The system stores a fault code and needs to be reset and cleared by the dealer if you use a wheel without a TPMS sensor..So if you have a flat tire, and use the OEM temporary spare that does not have a TPMS sensor, the dealer will have to reset the light and clear the fault code?

If that's the case...Please explain to me WHY would Honda not have a sensor in the OEM spare?

I thought the system on the Ridgeline would read and learn the signal of the TPMS sensor when it is reinstalled an driven a short distance.

Having to have the light "reset" can't be right. When you say the light would need to be reset, codes cleared, and wouldn't be covered under warranty, it sounds as if you're suggesting that it requires a trip to the dealer to reset the light. So correct me if I'm misunderstanding that part of what your response is. But I have a tire with a nail in it--I haven't had the nail removed and tire plugged yet, so it has a slow leak and eventually the TPMS light comes on in the dashboard. Once I add air the light goes out.

I can't imagine Honda, or any other auto maker designing a TPMS system that would not "reset" automatically everytime someone loses & restores a few pounds air pressure in a tire. It resets itself like in my case, probably via RF frequency to the receiver from the sensors in each tire.
