Windshield Replacement

I got a good sized star patterened crack in my windsheild, thanks to a big rig tossing gravel around and have a question. I've got State Farm, with full glass replacement so my insurance will cover it, but who do I go to. I've read numerous threads about windshield noise (I haven't had the problem yet) and I am concerned that when the windshield is replaced it may occur. Should I have the windshield replaced at the dealership or at an independent company chosen by my insurance?

Re: Windshield Replacement

chances are it will be the same company doing the work either way

for example my honda dealer uses windsheild world, so when I went to replace my cracked one I went directly to WW to cut a step out of the equation

no wind noise and the glass is PPG

Re: Windshield Replacement

I didn't even think to check to see if the replacement would be done in-house at the dealership. I'll give them a call. Thx

Re: Windshield Replacement

Dealerships rarely do glass replacement themselves. Be sure to ask for Genuine Honda Glass so that you get all the little shading patterns just right.

Re: Windshield Replacement

A few days ago, a tiny pebble hit the upper part of my windshield on the driver's side. Immediately, there was a 3" crack running down. Over the remainder of the 15-minute drive back home, it had ran down and over a total of about 3 feet.

I just had the sliding rear glass replaced a few months ago when it appeared to have spontaneously combusted. Honda never appeared at the dealer to investigate in a timely manner, so my insurance company ended up covering the enormous cost of replacement.

I hear rocks tapping the windshield all the the time and there are lots of tiny paint chips on the front and sides. I've never had a vehicle attract rocks like this thing does. One more glass replacement on this thing and I'm about to have to start paying out of pocket (limit of 3 claims in 36 months with State Farm). I'm not a happy camper.

In the interest of time, I accepted PPG replacement glass. Either it's thinner than Honda glass, was improperly installed, or uses different gasket material because I now hear moderate wind roar across the entire windshield area that I've never heard before.

I love the truck, but the higher gas gets and the more glass this thing eats resulting in having to rip it apart and reassemble it for repair, the more it makes me want to buy a Toyota Prius and just pay someone to deliver the occasional items that won't fit in the trunk.

Bummer.

On a side note, my fuel economy seems to have increased about 1.5 MPG over the last 4 or 5 weeks for no obvious reason. No changes to driving style, gasoline brand, etc.

Re: Windshield Replacement

PPG Stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. This company has been a leader in the industry and making windshields for cars trucks, even helicopters for years.
