Bed RaiL Removal... Can you tell me how?

Hello, great site guys, I spend hours reading the information posted on here. But, I found a subject, although mentioned countless numbers of times. I haven't actually found any details showing or telling just how by searching the site.

I would like to remove the plastic cap on top of the bed rails. Mostly for curiosity, but my intentions are admirable. I plan on making some unique items I can use in or on the bed for storage and tie downs, but I need to see just how things look under there.

Has anyone removed them, taken any pictures and care to share the details here for me and us.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bed RaiL Removal... Can you tell me how?

It's so simple, you'll wonder why it's so cheap on such an expensive truck! Pop off the screw cap. I use the skinny tool in the KTC kit - a screwdriver with a thin rag works great too. Take out the screw. Pull back on the rail cap about 3/4” to 1” - (it will stop). Lift straight up. Takes me about 15 seconds to get one of them off... (quicker of you use an electric screwdriver.)

Reverse the above, to get them back on: Line up the square tabs to the large portion of the hook holes. Push down on it. Slide forward until it stops. Put in screw. Snap on screw cover. (If you do use an electric screwdriver to put them back on, be VERY careful not to strip out the plastic threads. I do not use electric screwdrivers on plastic threads, just my choice.)

I have a couple of pics of the end of the bad rail, and a diagram with measurements of the holes... Click Here for Putco Locker bed rails.

Good Luck!

I'm sure you'll be able to get them off with the instructions you already have from other fine ROCheads, but here are some photos I posted in this thread:

I thought schwejo's answer here for you was as comprehensive an answer as any...

Good info to avoid future problems, too!

I have to say, I've been druelling over your green Ridge since the first time I saw it. I love that color and looked everywhere for one that might have been left on a lot somewhere when I finally bought my black one. I wanted a green one in the worse way.

I didn't even notice the removable cap you were referring to on my rails, so can't wait to investigate when I get back to my warehouse.

Great documentation on the rail installation you did on yours.

I had read a portion of your article earlier (a month ago) but must not have gone through the whole thing as you linked it to me this time.

Where did you get the corners for your railing?

I am working on a pair of slip tubes to mount in the corners that can be used for several different applications. Will post details as this project unfolds.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks! It's funny - Black is my favorite, but I am too old, lazy and have the worst knees to keep it clean! Just keeping my Black motorcycle clean is aggravating to my OCD!

have your wife back into the garage door as it is going up, this quickly pries the trim pieces off. Worked for my truck.

Re: Bed RaiL Removal... Can you tell me how?

Looks like a redesigned bed rail (not just the trim cap). I'd like to have the new part just for piece of mind
