While the masking tape was still in place, I slowley removed the red backing from the trim and inched around the molding until I reached the end. BTW, I attached the trim to the door and not the actual molding. Also, there will be enough trim left for place accents on other parts of the truck.
Guys - I've looked up and down the net and cannot find the 1/8" trim. I'm looking for it in black. I couldn't even find it on the Pep Boys website.

Does anyone know where I can find it?

It only comes in chrome. This is the manufacture of the trim. Cowles Products - Automotive Molding & Striping

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

Thanks.

Certainly there is some company that makes it in black. I'll keep searching.

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

Sportwing service rocks!

I placed my order late in the evening on Tue, 5/13 and it was sitting on my porch when I got home today (Thu, 5/15). I live in OH, which is where they're located, but still - I received it less than 48 hours after ordering it.

Still searching high and low for 1/8" black accessorizing molding though.

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

I gave up on the 1/8" balck molding. I ordered 1/4" black molding. The guys at SportWing (where I ordered it from) said it was flexible enough for what I was going to do. If it doesn't work or 1/4" is too much, I'll return it.

It's worth a shot! I think the silver molding trimmed in black on a silver RL will look very nice.

Thanks, Paladin!

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

IMHO any type of trim whether it's black or chrome will definitely enhance the look of the molding.

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

Can you believe it took me two months to notice? When I installed the sportwing molding on my truck, I got the driver's side moldings a little lower than the passenger side. They are not centered in the middle area.

At first I thought it might have slid down--but looking at previous photos of the project--it was an installer malfunction.

Normally I would just leave it and I still might--but can I remove the molding and reapply with more 3m tape and some more adhesive promoter? Would a hair dryer heat it up enough to get it off or is that 3m tape permanent?

Thanks for the help. I thought I measured correctly. Things went so smooth on the first install I must have taken it a little too carelessly on the driver's side.
And to think that is the side we did not want to mess up just for the simple reason I would see it always--that's why I started on the passenger side.

Wouldn't even bother me but I am kind of anal about things that are not symetrical. I even have to take a second drink out of a 20 oz bottle of Diet Coke if I don't get the lid on just the right way the first time.

You can remove the molding with a hair dryer and some dental floss or nylon fishing line and a little lubrication. Heat the molding up with the hair dryer, apply some vegtable oil or spray detailer and knife the the molding off with the non abrasive floss or fishing line.

The 3m tape would be shot now and would think reaplying new tape would be a pain.

You say it took some time before you noticed the difference, it's hard to see both sides to compare so you may be the only one who knows.

Maybe contact SportWing and explain your situation and they may help out with little cost.

Re: Installed - SportWing Painted Body Side Molding

I fitted my sportwing strips to my Black RL today, Before I fitted them I lined them up and I noticed the white from the tape along the top, It looked kinda dodgy. So I got out my paint pen and went along the edge of the 3m tape and painted it, Fitted the strips and they look great, No nasty white stripe..

They look really good on there, IMO, a lot nicer than the Honda strips..
