Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

Boys and their toyz..undecided..between Torzo soft installed in Miami for $375plus tax or the new Rolbak..I really like the looks and security of the Rolbak..but I do not use the truck to really secure more than what will fit inside the cab or under the bed..Anyone know how vinyl covers withstand the humid hot weather regarding mold and or fading?
Thanks.
AM..

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

I agree with jsant01. And after reviewing both websites, plus the Retrax one, I doubly agree.
The Rollbak uses about (it looks like) 1 1/2 - 2ft feet of bed space, and is under constant spring tension. You have to manually control the cover with an awkward looking strap while it's stowing. Leaves, dirt, and other stuff on the cover gets dumped right into the bin as you close it unless you clean it off. The rails require greasing.
The Backflip folds up right against the rear window using very little bed space. Also, as they say, protecting the window from stuff you might throw into the bed. You can open it partially to get into the trunk. The whole assembly is much simpler, a big advantage. They claim that it's watertight.
I have no idea why I'm trying to sell this thing.

I, too, was on their waiting list as well. Think this may be the one for me.
I wonder which company first came up with the rolling tonneau cover design/idea. Bak Industries have been around for awhile and their roll up design is not that new. I don't think they have rattling issues with their tonneau covers..... not 100% sure, though.

I tend to agree with some of you that the rolling up tonneau may not be the most practical design. I think I might take the plunge and go for the flip style. They say gas mileage improves with a tonneau cover....... probably not much, but what the heck, I like the way it fits the contours of the RL bed.

I wonder if I can get the thing for half price or even free from Bak Industries because I would be the first to try this thing out and write a positive review.

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

Got my email last night as well for the backflip cover. Ordered it this morning . This is the one I have been waiting on. I had one on my last truck and loved it.
I will report when it arrives.

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

mugen1, I need to thank you for the tip on this manufacturer from an earlier thread on Tonneau covers. I investigated your lead and was quite impressed with what I saw. Although you were looking for a soft roll-up I found the flip top that we are talking about now. I signed up for the "first notify" list and received my e-mail today after work. You, however, posted this thread earlier today and beat the e-mail they sent.

I'm seriously interested and will probably buy, but it looks like MikeFL beat us to it. You deserve a bonus as far as I'm concerned for turning us on to this.

Thanks again

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

For me it all started the day after I bought my RL in March. The first thing I did was email Bak and asked them if they are going to make a cover like the the one I had on my last truck. They said it was being worked on and they would put me on first to notify list. Long and behold, the email came last night.
This is a top notch company and although I don't have the cover yet, I have no doubt it will be first class. From talking to them today, it sounds like it wont ship out until beginning of next week, oh well, I waited this long, I can wait another week.

You know the routine, Mike. Looking for your honest opinion and of course photos.

Good Luck

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

Mike,
I will be awaiting your review and, of course, multiple pictures of the installation. I have been 'back and forth' about getting a tonneau cover. The OEM one is nice but mucho expensive compared to other options. I also really don't want to give up any major amounts of bed space for a rolling cover. The BakFlip seems to be just right. Easy to remove but also easy to get full access to the bed without completely removing the cover.

One thing you absolutely have to report on is how the cover affects opening pf the trunk. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

I too, await Mike's feedback. I hope the $200.00 off introductory price stays in effect for that long.

BTW, I e-mailed Bak Industries back when I bought my Ridgeline about a year ago. So, do I win the prize? j/k.

I'm surprised they remembered me. To be honest, I had given up on them.

Oh, I received news from them today that they have indeed given up on making a roll up tonneau cover.

=================================
taken from e=mail I recieved today

Hi,

First of all, thank you for your interest in ROLLBAK Tonneau Cover! We tried and tried to make a RollBAK for the Ridgeline, but due to installation issues and interference with the on-board trunk that those rails present, we abandoned that development and we do not currently intend to make a RollBAK Cover for that truck.

To be honest...the BAKFlip cover is a better cover when compared to the RollBAK...it is much more water tight and easily removable.

Thanks for the putting this information on the web forums!. Hopefully we have answered your questions...should you have any more, please do not hesitate to email or call. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Regards,
Mark

Exclamation Re: Rolbak Tonneau Cover

Hey,

All you guys out there thinking about the BakFlip, you may want to compare to the Torza Top. I have the hardtop installed on my truck and it is water tight and very easy to use. There are some advantages to the BakFlip; the whole thing folds up to the front, but in doing so, I don't see how that can keep out the water.

I have had mine through car washes and only had a drop or two of water in my bed.

My trunk opens almost all the way and the installation is very similar to the BakFlip.

You should really give both a good hard look before you buy.
