Any Yoopers Out There?

OK...I did a search on Yoopers in this thread it came up empty, and I am curious, any there any Yooper ROC'rs besides myself?

For you non-Yoopers... a Yooper is a person born and raised and/or living in the UP of MI. The term Yooper is defined as, "A native or inhabitant of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan." I think it comes from the locals, when asked where they are from, told folks that they were "UPers"...which sounds like Yoopers...thus the handle. Oh, and all us Yoopers have nickname for downstaters (folks who like in the Lower Peninsula of MI), we call them "Trolls" (Because they live under the bridge (Mackinac Bridge that is)). You don't want to know what we call people from Illinois...

So, like I said, just curious... any other Yoopers frequent this board? Either currently living in the UP of MI or originally from there? I was born and raised just north of Escanaba MI.

Re: Any Yoopers Out There?

I'm not a yooper, but I've been there many times! Does that count? I was born in Green Bay, raised in Minneapolis, and spent 15 years in Madison. Spent a bit of time backpacking and camping in the Porkies --- love it up there! Saw a house for sale on the shore and can't get it out of my mind!

Re: Any Yoopers Out There?

cd Do you eat Pasties too???

Sorry cd I'm a chedderhead through and through....

Moved to Minneapolis for 15 years and got crap for being a chedderhead in viking land. Move back to Wisconsin 8yrs ago and got crap for being a viking in chedderland. Spent 30yrs watching the pack getting trounced upon, but the best way to silence a viking is ask them HOW MANY SUPERBOWLS DID THEY WIN??

Not sure what the UP'ers call Illinois's ppl... Wisconsin generally calls them the Flatlanders....

You bet you're sweet bippie, I eat Pasties, CU! They're really tasty. I mean, meat, potatoes, onions, carrots, spices, all wrapped up in a tasty crust... my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

They also make breakfast pasties up there too. Not as good as a "regular" pasty, but darn tasty.

Yeah, that'll shut 'em up! I had one cocky Packer fan say, after I told him I was a Lions fan, "Well...you live in WI long enough and you'll become a Packer fan". I said, "Hmmm...I doubt that...I refuse to go through that surgery where they suck out 1/2 your brain so you can become a Packer fan". He didn't think that was so funny.

No kidding, vortmax. That place used to be a hoppin' berg when K.I. Saywer Airforce Base was at full swing. I used to play softball in Little Lake, just down the road from Gwinn. Yep, nice people, that's for sure!

No 2006RL, vacationing or just passing through don't make you a Yooper. You gotta live through some of the winters up there (we got 286" of snow in Ishpeming MI when I lived up there in the early '90's), learn to eat/love pasties, and start to say, "eh" after ever sentence!

Oh, yeah, and it don't hurt to be able to put up with mosquitoes. They are huge up there. As my cousin likes to say, "The mosquitoes in the UP are so big, they can stand flat footed and f--k a turkey"!!!!

Re: Any Yoopers Out There?

Have a place on a lake near Gwinn. Actually I am trying to convince my wife to move there. Live in Plainfield, IL now. My work would let me move. My wife is from Texas and loves going to the Yoop, just not yet convinced to live there yet. I'm working on her.

Re: Any Yoopers Out There?

OK...I thought I would bump this in case there are a few more ROC Members who are Yoopers...and to reply to a couple of posts.

Workin' on her, huh ScottD? TMI!

Seriously, that would probably be a tough sell, especially if your wife is from Texas. Those UP winters can be brutal!

Hey Dave...alright...another Yooper! Yep, know exactly where Kinross is. I had a friend who worked in that area for a while. Went and visited for a weekend of golf, beer, and...well, beer!

Nice area. I think we played Brimley in football when I was in high school.
